What We Want VS What We'll Get?

I never mentioned Geordi Laforge.
I'm not talking about offensiveness
STEPhon IT mentioned offensive. In their respective pilots both Mayweather and Laforge were "the black guy as the driver of the ship," both were young, positive and enthusiastic. They had the same starting point.

LaForge being well developed came later, Mayweather had a interesting backstory that TPTB choose not to expand upon. He should have been a fount of knowledge and experience to Archer, but this wasn't explored.

Then why ask me?

In their respective pilots both Mayweather and Laforge were "the black guy as the driver of the ship," both were young, positive and enthusiastic. They had the same starting point.

Ok, but not sure how that affects things, every character has a starting point, the fact of there being superficial similarities has no bearing on my point. On the contrary it actually reinforces it by illustrating just what could have been done with that starting point.

LaForge being well developed came later, Mayweather had a interesting backstory that TPTB choose not to expand upon. He should have been a fount of knowledge and experience to Archer, but this wasn't explored.

Absolutely, couldn't agree more, he kept being referred to as having experience and a background in space that was barely touched on or exploited by the writers. This is exactly my point, LaForge (or in the comparison I actually used - Sisko) became a worthwhile part of the show, he contributed something more than simply being black.

LaForge represents strong writing which gave black people a real character they could identify with. For those open to persuasion, you had a positive, human example of black empowerment that would challenge their preconceptions. It's hard to see LaForge as a stereotype, in fact he's quite a strange, oddball character who is also decent, intelligent and hardworking.

Mayweather simply represented a demographic, he was there precisely because there had to be someone on the helm and they may as well be black. He didn't challenge any preconceptions because the only meaningful preconception was that there would be a black guy in there and there was. Rather than challenging anything, he reinforced the perception that TV shows are tokenistic in representing minorities, they do it for the ratings and to avoid being accused of racism.

He wasn't offensive, I'm not sure why you'd challenge me on that when I neither stated nor implied he was. However he singularly failed to bring anything of note to the franchise, precisely because his inclusion was tokenistic.

Whether that comes down to the writers directly or his lack of acting talent is immaterial, in either case people involved in either casting or writing him made it clear they simply didn't care enough about the character to make a decent showing.

Universe
Want:
Prime
Get: I'm guessing we'll get the JJVerse, because TPTB will want to tie their show as much as they can to the cool new Trek, rather than anchoring it down to the old petered out franchise.

Setting
Want:
Enterprise.
Get: Elsewhere. While I would love to see the show take place on the Enterprise, I don't think the studio is going to want to invite the kind of confusion that would create with general audiences. "Where's Kirk and Spock? Why doesn't this ship look like the one in the movies? Etc.."

Release Format
Want:
All-at-Once.
Get: One-at-a-time. CBS is far too old-fashioned to embrace All-at-Once distribution. Moreover, I think they're the type to hedge their bet so much, they'd probably start with half a season and see how the first few episodes are received before even committing to the second half.

Episodes
Want:
This question I can't answer. I would love a 13 episode arc story/miniseries that's really tightly knit and has a high caliber production value. But I'd also love a standard 20+ episode batch of stories to watch and rewatch for years to come.
Get: 20+ Episodic Trek, because, as I mentioned above, I don't think CBS has the guts to stray too far from formula.

Cast
Want:
I couldn't care less, as long as they're competent actors.
Get: Probably one "name" or two that will suck the salary bank dry, and the rest a bunch of no-names.

Captain
Want:
On gender or race, I don't care. But in personality, I'd like to see a character that's more conservative and thoughtful than Kirk, but more ready-for-action than Picard. I'm ready for Benjamin Sisko 2.0.
Get: I hate even thinking it, but I really think we'll probably get more "Spoiled Brats In Space" like the JJVerse has provided.

If the jjverse is the "property" of the movies, then the TV show might be in the Prime universe?
That's what I've been saying. I don't know about property rights, but it still makes sense from the perspective of CBS does TV (Prime) and Paramount does movies (lately Abramsverse).

If the jjverse is the "property" of the movies, then the TV show might be in the Prime universe?
CBS television owns the movies, Paramount has the rights to make them and gets a percentage of the money. But Paramount doesn't own the movies.

That doesn't determine the choice of universe. It matters more that it makes sense for CBS to differentiate its product from Paramount.

Why's that? I would argue it makes more commercial sense for the two to tie together and feed each other like the MCU.
I am somewhat guided by the Paramount demand that CBS wait at least six months after Paramount's Star Trek Beyond before airing the TV series. And there probably will be at least one movie more for which they'll want to avoid market confusion. We'll find out if that's indicative of their choice for which universe to use.

We still need a robe-sexual character. :)
A crewmember who secretly has sex with people's robes while they're on duty? Might make for a interesting investigation type episode.
It feels like you aren't actually reading my posts
To be fair they are kind of long.

I wonder if that will be contingent on how well Beyond does at the boxoffice? With a six month gap, would there would be time to change the new series to one that had less assocation?

Not a complete redo, but just enough for there to be separation.

Want: Star Trek
Get: Star Trek
Will I like it? Remains to be seen. The folks behind the current movies have made an enjoyable product so, hopefully, they will be able to bring that sensibility to television.

Universe: Brand-New Universe, unrelated to either.
Setting: Elsewhere, but with an Enterprise mentioned occasionally.
Episodes: Doesn't worry me.
How Much: 10-13 episodes. Loose arc-based, similar to The Flash. Some complete one-and-done and some more complete mythology but knowing when to do which.
Cast: Hire the best person for the job
Captain: Human Female.
My other wants: Get a few novelverse writers to adapt their stories for TV, like new Doctor Who did. I'd like to see the Fringe writers try some Trek stuff, especially the guys who wrote "White Tulip". Or see Ron Moore or Manny Coto come back and write something a bit different.

To be fair they are kind of long.

Noted, shall endeavour to edit, be succinct, reduce the unnecessary waffle, henceforth and always to work only in short, snappy and above all precise terms, working with my reader to minimize the fuss, confusion and redundancy in post space, time and cognitive function.

An example, if one might feel the necessity to deal in such terms, might focus on the manner in words can be used in multiple manners, with subtle differences in meaning across variable contexts and....oh yeah
