Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

It was a decent finale. I kind of wish there was a better way to end the Kara/Alex fight scene, but I really do like that that theme of hope that permeated the season was the effect here to stop mariyad. I actually liked the fights between J'onn, Supergirl, and Indigo and Non and I'm not surprised Alex would know how to pilot the pod. How long has it been in the DEO? I'm sure they would learn how to fly it, considering that's their job.

I hope Supergirl is renewed. I really liked this season, and the positiveity it brought. I like watching an hour drama and feeling optimistic. Was there shaky parts? Sure, but overall, I'm looking forward to season 2, if we get one. If not, it's not the end of the world, but we need Benoist in a new series than. I will miss not being able to see her on my TV every week.

I cannot recommend reruns of Glee, if you're really hard up for more Melissa.
I've seen Glee and she was wasted on Glee. The best thing I've seen her in other than Supergirl is Whiplash. Maybe I should check out her imdb page. She's got to be in more stuff than those three things.

Since the mid 80s ( Crisis On Infinite Earths/Man of Steel) Superman has often been shown to need an air supply to work in outer space.

That was then: now, he can survive in space without a breather device.

Indigo is a nanite colony that can convert into electricity/digital information, with the ability to manipulate her body on a molecular level.

How in hell do you rip her in two when she can just decide to be two feet taller/longer?

What would have been fun is if after J'onn bisected the droid lady, is that instead of two halves of an adult pissing coolant and motor oil, she'd reconfigured into two spooky blue 7 year olds.

Are you saying that he can breath in space or exist without breathing?

That's a fundamental change.

In the 80s comics there, probably set during his exile. Clark had a star drive on his belt. He could zap between two locations, but he didn't have maps or a good nav system. The plan was to keep randomly jumping towards stars that might have life, until he saw something habitable, close enough to fly at, and build a home there.

Holding his breath most of the time, trying to survive, rationing a few litres of air for as long as possible.

The "needs to breath in space" thing was scrapped during the mid-90s, it might have come back in the nu-52.

So long as the show is internally consistent regarding Kryptonian capabilities, what does it matter which era of the comics said it was or wasn't possible?

It's almost like the author thought that they jump like the Hulk.

So does that mean that J'onn has a ship of his own somewhere if he can't fly through space either?

"What were we supposed to do with a hundred million tons of metal?"

Sell it and revitalize your economy dingbat, like Rey did in St.... Oh, spoilers, right, sorry.

"Better Angels" / season finale--

Supergirl/Kara
:When fighting Alex, why not use her freezing breath to immobilize her? Why not use her allegedly faster-than-Superman speed to strip her of the uniform and weapons?

Freeze breath could've been worth trying, but given that jump, it seemed that armor was powered, so it might not have helped. Her speed would not have held up well enough for your tactic to work at all, given that she would be forced to touch the Kryptonite laced armor directly the entire time she was trying to remove it.

My main question there was: why fight Alex at all? Everything was set up to claim that her only choice was to kill Alex or let Alex kill her, but Supergirl could just as easily remove herself from the situation and give herself time to come up with a plan/put into motion her existing plan. Yes, Non could counter that by threatening to make Alex kill herself, and I'm sure that's exactly where the writers would've gone in such a situation, but it seemed really strange that the idea never even occurred to her. Especially strange that, while repeatedly stating she refused to fight, she still jumped straight into attack mode several times.

Not to mention the fact that this was so quickly and easily defused that the situation wasn't even worth the setup time. It was basically only there to give them a cliffhanger for the previous episode.

Soo..a restoration of "hope" breaks the mind control? That's about as plausible as rubbing on a rabbit's foot while hoping on one foot.

Symbolically I like the way it ties into the themes of the rest of the season. Narratively, I have to agree they didn't really earn the idea that 'hope' and 'mind control' actually have anything to do with each other.

: He became a throwaway villain.

Unfortunately true. After a whole season of setup, both Non and Astra were cut down way too easily, and Non's death didn't even really matter much. In the end, the actual villain here was Indigo, who's been a terrible character from the moment she appeared.

True, and it's also an enemy that Non didn't face at the end of this episode - which is kind of strange, since presumably Alex still had it and was awfully worried about John and Kara going alone....

No, this time she really didn't have a choice - Lord specifically said if any Human came too close to the power source, their head would explode. I do wish they'd tied it back into her discussion last week and the very bad results of that, in order to take the opportunity to actually show her learning to be a little more professional, but oh well.

Overall I thought it was a decent episode - like most, my reaction was a little mixed, but for this was it was more positive than negative. As a season finale, though, it was way too low-key, slow and quiet. Sure, the personal drama was fine, but it almost felt like that was all there was. Which is weird, because that final fight scene is the first fight scene in the entire history of the show that I really enjoyed, but it was just over way too quickly. As was Non himself, whose character ultimately didn't really go anywhere. And Indigo dying from being torn apart - while visually cool - really didn't make sense.

In regards to Kryptonian abilities in space, I was surprised at the limits they established here (not that they're a bad thing). I've seen different versions of Superman needing equipment to breath in space, but I've never seen a version of him that was unable to fly in space, provided he had breathing equipment. Is that new to this show?

Overall, I'm not sure whether I'll be back for a potential season 2 or not. I can't really say that the show's improved much at all over the course of this season. But then again, it has at least proven it's willingness to do something unexpected every now and again, and I have grown somewhat fond of Kara, Alex and Jonn as characters. That was also a pretty great cliffhanger in terms of making me want to know what's inside the pod.

In the post-Crisis comics, Superman could still hold his breath in space for a good period even while lifting an extremely heavy object into orbit, and could propel himself through space; here Supergirl could do neither, so that's a change...not the same thing.

I am still irked by how Superman was treated in these 2 episodes. I don't feel like he was given the respect that his character deserves. It would have been better if the writers had just stuck with the "off world" excuse. But it was a poor use of the character to first have him succumb to the mind control, then have the character just lie unconscious the whole episode. They did not just sideline Superman, they deliberately made him look completely powerless and useless. That's what irks me the most.

"Better Angels" / season finale--

Wait...James says "no one could have saved all three--not even Clark" That seems to suggest he--contrary to that earlier episode--is faster than Supergirl. Continuity--yay!

Both Supes and Kara have other options for saving people than just their speed. Perhaps Kara feels that a more experienced hero like Clark might have come up with another solution (get under them and use low-level superbreath to slow their descent?) and James is reassuring her that not even Clark is that savvy?

Maybe James was lying to Kara to make her feel better and help her self-esteem. After all, she was already feeling terrible about not saving the woman, it would only have made her feel even worse if James had said "yeah, your cousin could have easily saved all 3." In fact, it would have reinforced Kara's feelings of not being good enough.

She could have saved all three - grabbed two and used high-powered superbreath blown to bounce off the ground to slow the other. Superheroes don't seem to run through enough practice scenarios - just because you're super doesn't mean you don't need to train. I hope they show Kara starting to do so a bit more now that this happened to her co-worker.

Then Non would send ten over the edge or whatever it took. All that mattered to the story was that Supergirl couldn't save them all.

Spider-Man redesigned his webbing, and did practice drills, so that the next time the Green Goblin threw his girlfriend off a bridge he would still have a date to take to Thanks Giving at Aunt May's house.

This (above) is from a thought bubble from a 1990s comic when Peter had to deal with the Jackal throwing a clone of Gwen Stacy off the same bridge the original Gwen died near enough, while being thrown off.
