Babylon 5

I've never watched B5, but I'm definitely interested.

I'm on season 1 of DS9 now in my first Star Trek watchthrough, intermixing it with season 6 of TNG, and now I'm wondering if I should throw B5 in there too. Funnily enough, the episode I just watched, Birthright, Part I, aired the same day as the first pilot film, The Gathering. Just lucky timing, I guess, what do you think?

They are quite a bit different. I might finish one before starting the other.

Also, I've heard the DVDs are poor stretched 16:9 transfers. Anywhere you can watch the standard 4:3 episodes in decent quality?

I use the 4:3 when I watch it on my flat screen.

I'm introducing friends to TNG and DS9 using the same methodology and right now you're just very slightly behind us! We're doing three episodes per week so you may roar past us in the end.

I did watch B5 as well when it originally aired, though I didn't really get into it until early-mid S3. Can't really imagine bringing that to my friends as well, as then our progress through each series would become pretty tedious.

I'd definitely hold off on B5 until the Trek marathon is done with. It's a completely different show, and it's rigidly serialized. It probably benefits most from watching it straight thru without distractions.

There can be a purpose behind parallel viewing. On a franchise and genre rewatch some years ago, I lined up all the Star Trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) series and Babylon 5 - and all their respective movies - in airdate (series) and release (movies) order. You can watch the technology improve, see the concerns of the day, and see the storylines align when more than one series, or the movies, were showing at the same time. And in the case of DS9 v. B5 ("This isn't some deep space franchise; this station is about something!"), you can watch for signs of jealousy about which series stole from the other and which did it better.

So I would not "definitely hold off on B5 until the Trek marathon is done." It really depends on what you'd like to do with how you integrate your viewing, perhaps in a larger scope of thoughtful purpose to make it "about something."

Do watch, if only to see how the DS9 team notice the existence of B5 and up their game in response. The dvd stretching can be irritating, but no worse than watching 60s Doctor Who. The story triumphs over visual flaws, whatever their cause.

I hope I'm not being too annoying with these pics from Pat & Claudia's European tour, but I just had to share this one:

I'll stop now. :)

Please don't:) - I'd like to see Pat in Doctor Who. (Wouldn't mind seeing Claudia in it either come to that)

I wouldn't mind seeing Claudia in anything. I thought of a joke, but I'm much to classy to say I'd be happy to see her in nothing as well.

I'm delighted that I introduced Babylon 5 to my mother. She is a bit older (obviously because I'm over 30) but she has quite a track record from 24 to Lost to Stargate. Most recently she has watched things like Hannibal and Person Of Interest. Her reaction was pretty lukewarm, not quite sure if this is something that she would like to watch for five seasons. It can be quite a feeling when the kid just brings five boxes in front of you and says this is the next show you should watch! But now she likes it.

There were other so called WHAM! episodes already but Babylon Squared was the first HUGE shocker for obvious reasons. It's always fun to watch with someone new and look at their faces at the right moment. The quick flashforward put her on the edge of her seat and when the blue space suit opened up, let's just say her jaw was floored. "What the f..." Then Chrysalis came and that was obviously another one, wasn't there for those reactions, but she said it was just brilliant. I don't think she quite connects all the hints yet to what all of this stuff with Morden and those pesky spidery ships mean, but she is worried and doesn't like where Londo seems to be going. Smart.

At the moment she has watched the season two opening Points Of Departure and has serious doubts about Sheridan. She would like Sinclair back, because that guy doesn't feel right and he smiles too much. I had to repeat G'kar's words: "No one here is exactly what he appears."

Google, baby. She's done nude photoshoots. She took great pride in a rather perfect "natural body".

They went back to the original film elements for the DVD transfers, so for the most part, they look great in 16:9, as the frame was protected for the widescreen format when the show was originally filmed. The one caveat is that the show's visual effects (including shots with live action elements) were all finished in 1.33:1. To make these 16:9, they have been horribly cropped (not stretched).

I believe the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio versions are on iTunes, but someone else can confirm.

Didn't B5 air in WS orignally, along with the VHS being released in WS.

No, it was filmed in widescreen but never aired that way. The CGI was rendered in standard ratio due to a short-sighted financial decision on the part of the producers (who told JMS that it couldn't be done in wide rather than spend the money.

It's been a long time but I think Channel 4 aired it in WS in the UK.
