Renaming the Moon

If/when we ever get out there - even if it's just colonies on the Moon and Mars - Earth won't be the only place that people will call "home."

Instead of "SOL" for the sun, how about something that reflects that it is the sun that was large in the sky when our species was young, and even if we spread to thousands of star systems, it was our very first star.

Stella Nativitatem, Latin for "Birth Star."

It's not the sort of name that people would use in everyday conversation. And the fact is that when we eventually colonize other solar systems, our Sun will not be their "birth star."

I realize that you're going for humor about this, but the fact is that our Sun will not last forever, and Earth certainly won't. That's why we really need to kick people out of their apathy - or in some cases, their antipathy - toward the space program. It won't matter one bit what name we give the Moon if there's nobody around to use it.

One can't imagine why ``we only have five billion years before the Earth ceases existing!'' doesn't rally people to immediate action.

The Sun has approximately 5 billion years. Earth has less, and humans far less even than Earth. Given that there are many crucial things we don't yet know how to do, to make interstellar flight possible, let alone find habitable planets elsewhere, it really isn't too soon to take this seriously.

3 billion years is the current estimate for the continued liveability for the human race, as it is now, on Earth.

Humans have only been humans/sapient beings for 150,000 years, 20,000 times less time. Our entire time as this species, twenty thousand times over.

Don't even bother trying to make that sound like it's a tiny amount of time, it isn't by any imaginable stretch.

I remember reading an article back in the early 90s that made the argument that only Luna should be called moon and that all other 'moons' should be referred to only as satellites. Furthermore, the article said only Sol should be called sun and that all other 'suns' should be referred to only as stars.

^ Not the official name. It's official name is just "The Galaxy". :p

Well it's a lame non-official name. The Galaxy is actually better. As for Earth-how about Wrigley's Pleasure Planet?

Maybe we should all just pull a Prince and change its name to a symbol. We would then all then refer to our planet as the planet formerly known as Earth.
