^ I always thought Tuvok was demoted because of the events in "Prime Factors" and then later was promoted back to LCDR.

Nothing ever mentioned about this on screen - indeed, his rank pips change between scenes
Not on usual O'Brien wore the rank insignia of a Lt. for most of his apperances on TNG.
I'm no expert but for someone in Stafleet for decades as an officer he took very long to rise up the ranksNothing ever mentioned about this on screen - indeed, his rank pips change between scenes

OK thanks, so did Bones keep his rank in TMP because he was 'drafted' by Nogura?Remember, he did resign from Starfleet for a good number of years. When he returned to the fleet, he would have started at the bottom of the seniority list

For anyone who has military experience, is it normal for a captain to keep the same senior staff for decades? I know TOS/movies crew were a semi-ensemble piece but is it only me that finds it pathetic only Sulu gets a captaincy of another ship, Chekov accepts demotion as XO from Reliant to be navigator back on the Enterprise, Scott, McCoy and Uhura keep the same posts for decades?
1) The credits for the first season always list Tuvok as "Lieutenant Tuvok" with the exception of Caretaker, but that episode had special credits which didn't list anyone's ranks except for Janeway's.^ I always thought Tuvok was demoted because of the events in "Prime Factors" and then later was promoted back to LCDR.

2) When Tuvok's pips were "corrected" Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres lost their full lieutenant's pips and started wearing Lt. JG's pips so that Tuvok could still have clear seniority over them, as opposed to holding the same rank as them. While it's true B'Elanna was also involved with Tuvok in the scheme in Prime Factors and could theoretically be punished and demoted as well, Tom was not, so it makes no sense for him to be demoted.
Bottom line, Tuvok's pips was a costuming error that eventually got corrected.
You mean different style? Yes, the Maquis portion of Voyager's crew wear different pips, but they still work on the same principle as the Starfleet, with 1 solid and 1 hollow pip/bar representing Lieutenant JG and two solid pips/bars representing a full Lieutenant.
Yes, I know all that. The point of the matter is, despite their different styles, Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres wore rank insignia which represented the same rank.
Although, since Tom Paris also served in the Maquis (it's the reason he was in prison) he wouldn't really be a Federation citizen anymore either.
And how about Spock who was captain of the Enterprise in TWOK*, yet back as a first officer in FF. Sure, he died in between so Strafleet might be hesitant to put him straight back to the big chair. For anyone who has military experience, is it normal for a captain to keep the same senior staff for decades? * (Who was his first officer?)
It might be Uhura...
Spock never wanted to take command positions - hell, he gives Kirk the ship as soon as he can in WoK. It might be that he prefers to serve under Kirk as first officer while retaining his rank of Captain. Enterprise-A had to have been the most Command Heavy ships in the fleet - three officers with the rank of Captain (four if you count Sulu in the novel) and three with the rank of full Commander (if you don't count Sulu in the novel)
