Did Kylo Ren ... ? (spoilers)

I'm sorry for spoiling it for you, but quite honestly, I don't see why anyone is reading this board if they HAVEN'T seen the movie at this point. What are you hoping to gain? EVERY thread is full of spoilers. The movie's been out two months, running 24-7.

Thread titles come up when there is a new post. He didn't even have to go looking for it.

Edit-oops ninja'd

But the thread title isn't really a spoiler. I could have posted "Does Kylo Ren Kill Finn?", which is a valid question. It doesn't tell you whether one or the other happens. The only way you know is if you click on it.
If you're asking someone if Kylo Ren killed Han Solo, then somebody must have killed Han Solo, and you believe the killer to be Kylo Ren. That's from the thread title, which shows up in its entirety on the main page feed, and in the new posts sidebar. That is why you're supposed to spoiler titles.

Not to be That Guy, but...sure, what the hell, I'll be That Guy....

(Emphasis mine.)
Nobody follows those rules and the mods rarely (never?) enforce them, you can look at any thread about a current season of a series, the titles (in the vast majority of cases) do not indicate spoilers in the thread and nobody has ever waited A YEAR to openly talk about an episode or a movie, for really big events (Hydra stuff in Winter Soldier or AoS for example) people use spoiler tags for a few days but that's it.

Sorry you got a big part of the movie spoiled. But it's a great movie with awesome characters (Rey!!) that you will still enjoy!
Thank you, and yes, I can't wait to see Rey in action. I've heard how popular she has become, and I want to see why. :D

I think people are not reading the OP's post beyond the title, which is not suggesting Han is alive, but that he sacrificed himself for the good of his son. And I think it's very likely that Han knew he'd probably die there but he attempted to help turn his son anyway. And I would definitely like to see Kylo turn back to good during the course of the new trilogy.

And if we do wanna debate whether or not he could potentially survive, I'd point out that Luke survives his entire hand being cut off and falling down a similar chasm.

In the case of active TV show season discussion threads, there's an understanding that the entire thread is spoilerish about episodes that have already aired. Spoiler discretion is still called for where upcoming episodes are concerned. And the thread titles themselves don't tend to contain huge spoilers.

In the case of a movie, lots of people seem to wait for the DVD these days, and putting such a huge spoiler in a thread title is putting it out there for everyone to see, even if they're being careful to avoid spoilers.

And the rules are the rules and there they are. If they're not the rules anymore, then somebody needs to take that pinned post down.

The rules don't mention understandings. We're supposed to put spoiler warnings in the thread titles or use spoiler tags otherwise.

And the rules are the rules ...
Except when it comes to TV shows, right? ;)

The spoiler happened, it probably shouldn't have but now that it's out people have to deal with it, it's not like there's another option.

Did Snape kill Dumbledore? Was Robb Stark betrayed and murdered by Roose Bolton at his uncles wedding?

I've seen this theory floating around the net, and found it interesting (albeit predictable). Did Kylo Ren really kill Han Solo? He needed to do it to complete his journey to the Dark Side. But in his moment of indecision, he cries that he's not sure he has the strength to do it, and Han takes the lightsaber. There is little struggle before the saber ignites and impales Han. Kylo seems a bit startled afterward. Han caresses his cheek as he falls.

So, the working theory is that Han "shot first" -- that is, sacrificed himself -- so that Kylo/Ben didn't get to kill him. In this way, he can be redeemed in a future movie, and Han will stay true to his promise that he would bring their son home.

Thoughts!
Watch it next time, or it's an infraction. Common knowledge or not, you know the rules and statute of limitations regarding spoilers. It's a year for films and television shows, form their first air date. That covers the entire world to account for disparities in release dates.

People who don't want to be spoiled about current episodes of a TV show can avoid the thread. There's no avoiding a huge spoiler in a thread title.
Doesn't matter, the spoiler rules apply in both cases, they are specific about thread titles and how to treat spoilers in threads.

And what kind of argument is "they can avoid the thread"? That goes completely against the intention of the rules, if there's no spoiler warning in the thread title the entire thread should be save for the entire season while it's airing (not a single episode would be older than a year during that time).

But I thought the point of the scene (established in lots of previous dialog) was that Kylo was still fighting "the light" within him. Face to face with his father, he became vulnerable.

Like I said, that was Kylo's plan all along. He wanted Han to think he was vulnerable, but I don't think he actually was. He was stringing Han along, so that when Kylo finally killed him, it would hurt all the worse.

That's just what Dark Side followers do.

I could buy that he was stringing Han along if we hadn't seen him earlier in the movie by himself confessing that he was feeling drawn back towards the light side - we know he's conflicted.

^ But by the time he actually faced Han, Kylo was fully intent on killing him. Kylo wanted to make Han suffer. He'd made his choice by that time.

First: the movie's been out for two months. The spoiler statute of limitations only goes so long.

Second: a mod was the first person to respond to the thread. If it was an infraction, it would have been noted.
The "statute of limitations" is a year. We're pretty forgiving of violations of it, but spoilers for a movie out less than two months and not on DVD/Blu-ray yet has always been off-limits, especially in the thread title.

By the way, nice job blaming Coloratura for being spoiled by seeing the title on the front page sidebar and then blaming me for not moderating/infracting your post even though it's not my forum and I can't actually do anything here. The only person you didn't blame for posting the spoilers is yourself. It makes your lecture to Coloratura about personal responsibility rather humorous.

I read his post, I just don't think such a silly premise warranted a long response. I agree that Han thought convincing Kylo was a longshot and that he was probably going to die in the attempt. That was evident by his hesitation to go onto the bridge and the grim look he gave as he convinced himself to go forward, risking his life to in a desperate attempt to save his son. But I don't for a minute believe that he took the lightsaber and killed himself with it to spare his son from having to do it. For one, it wouldn't alleviate Kylo's guilt since his situation still provoked Han's death. Secondly, Han's goal was to take Kylo away from the influence of the dark side; killing himself prevents that. Third, Han might not have known that Chewie was right there, but he had to have known that Chewie would go apeshit on Kylo to avenge his friend once he found out.

As far as the possibility of Han's survival, that's even more far-fetched than the killing himself idea. Luke was a Jedi and could direct/soften his fall, Han could not. Cloud City's air shafts were sucking falling debris into them safely for later disposal, Han just fell down into the planet's/weapon's energy core. Luke did not have a fatal wound, Han did. Cloud City didn't explode minutes later, Starkiller Base did.

But it did warrant a single word "no" response? I don't agree with it but it's not that outlandish of a theory. For one I think Han knew his own death might spark a change in Kylo, even if it wasn't his first choice.

In regards to the spoiler situation... I have to point out that he already offered to change the topic title himself a page back, and from his response probably never knew that it would pop up in the sidebar outside this forum.
