Did Kylo Ren ... ? (spoilers)

I've seen this theory floating around the net, and found it interesting (albeit predictable). Did Kylo Ren really kill Han Solo? He needed to do it to complete his journey to the Dark Side. But in his moment of indecision, he cries that he's not sure he has the strength to do it, and Han takes the lightsaber. There is little struggle before the saber ignites and impales Han. Kylo seems a bit startled afterward. Han caresses his cheek as he falls.

So, the working theory is that Han "shot first" -- that is, sacrificed himself -- so that Kylo/Ben didn't get to kill him. In this way, he can be redeemed in a future movie, and Han will stay true to his promise that he would bring their son home.

I'm a 24/7/365 caregiver for a family member. I have to plan things months in advance, or I don't get to do them. The new Star Trek movie has been planned out since the release date was revealed last year. Even then, there's still a good chance I won't get to see it opening night, or even in the first week.

In the case of the Star Wars film, my plans fell through, so I had to try and reschedule. I was hoping to see it before it left theaters, but regardless I was still hoping to see it (probably on the DVD release date) before someone revealed a massive spoiler, because for me "Han Solo was killed..." doesn't matter by whom, it's the same as "Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father!"

I mean, Han's my favorite Star Wars character (aside from Darth Vader), so learning this just really sucks. I still plan on seeing the movie, but this really punches a hole in my enthusiasm.

If you wanted to see the movie unspoiled you had more than enough time, you have only yourself to blame because it is unreasonable to expect to not run into spoilers about the most successful movie of the year after seven weeks.
Being spoiled becomes inevitable at some point, if it hadn't happened here you could have overheard people talking about it at the table next to yours in a restaurant for example, it happens.

Well, I tried to edit the title to "Han Solo and Kylo Ren", but I can't figure out how to do it. But would that have prevented you from clicking on it? Or mousing over it, which brings up a window showing the post? There comes (as someone upthread mentioned) where YOU have to take responsibility for what spoils you and what doesn't.

Kylo was bullshitting Han the whole time. Kylo's full intent was to kill Han and he knew it all along. Anything he might have said to the contrary was just an example of Dark Side lies.

But I thought the point of the scene (established in lots of previous dialog) was that Kylo was still fighting "the light" within him. Face to face with his father, he became vulnerable. Han saw his chance to "grab" him (he was first going to take the saber), but saw it slip away as the sunlight faded and Ren's expression changed. That's when he did what he had to do as a final redemption.

I don't necessarily buy it, but I'm quite surprised that everyone is throwing it out as quickly as they are. Clearly Kylo Ren will follow the Vader path and will come back at the end. They're not going to rock the boat that much.

But the thread title isn't really a spoiler. I could have posted "Does Kylo Ren Kill Chewbacca?", which is a valid question. It doesn't tell you whether one or the other happens. The only way you know is if you click on it... which, if you don't want to be spoiled, you don't.
