I thought the same thing. It's obviously what's in the larger picture but definitely added after the fact as an illustration.
I wonder if the enhanced version makes it look more prime-Trek than it really is. The story on TrekCore points out how the style is more prime Starfleet in appearance.
Its only really the pennant style with looks Prime-Trek'ish as its in the style similar to the TMP - TNG arrowhead.
Nothing else about the ship looks original timeline to me and with this if it was a conscious nod of the cap I would have prefered the version from the TOS ship.

It's my picture. It's the first thing that jumped out at me when I got it in the mail. You'll notice the autographed version shown earlier in this thread has the same thing. Looking at the actual physical print, there are several colors that look like maybe they were color value replaced (or maybe just a printer color space issue). Like this was a work in progress kind of thing until they got it right. Name in front of the bridge is clearly not a late addition. Keep in mind it is concept, and they may have gone with a completely different design!
If the design is accurate, I can understand why. It can "crash" on the surface and remain upright, with minimal damage to the superstructure. A (TOS) Constitution would have been sitting on its side, which would have made working inside rather cumbersome.
That being said, if this is indeed what we're in for, I'm disappointed.

They've always had them. The BOP is basically a federation ship with a snazzy paint job.
Literally. Deleted dialogue from Balance of Terror stated outright that Romulan spies had stolen Federation starship designs to fashion their own (adding to suspicion of Spock once the Romulan/Vulcan connection was shown). Now we see exactly which design was ripped off. Add a torpedo tube up front and a fin in the back, take away the bridge window, you've got the BOP.
Plus Trek designers are not given much freedom to make new ship designs I think. They have to have the same, or similar elements. Is that a studio ruling?
Never heard of such a rule. Closest I can think of is the even number of nacelle rule. Even that wasn't hard and fast.
But with a few very rare exceptions you see ships in Trek with very few differences.. For example a saucer section, two nacelles, and a lower engineering hull and neck structure. It'd be nice to see something truly unique. The Defiant in DS9 was a total departure from this.
Well the Defiant along with the First Contact ships; You could maybe argue against the Akira to a degree but the Steamrunner and Sabre were fairly large departures from the norm. I like to think that the Defiant paved the way for that opening the door.
All of them, including the Akira and Norway to my eye, are basically saucers with nacelles on booms/merged into the hull (the latter being very Defiant like) with only the Sabre and Akira having what you would consider close to a 'traditional' engineering hull. Then you get other departures like the Akira and Steamrunner meaning to have through-deck shuttlebays and the Sabre having a fore facing bay.
[though with your post I have probably simply identified the exceptions you mentioned lol]
Back to the Franklin art, I think the thing which is throwing off the design is the size of what I (and I assume most others) think is the Bridge window (though that just means it is a very small ship) and I am not too keen on the surface detailing around the saucer.
I really quite like the design of the nacelles (would like to see what they would look like with red caps, and Cage style pointed ones at that), very retro looking however I hope if this is roughly (or exactly) the ship in the film that they ditch the TMP style Starfleet pennants and instead opt for something more like TOS.
OK i dig your post. This is interesting. I too also find that front window rather largish. Unless the bridge is more then the traditional height and maybe cavernous.
Or maybe a large bridge window if the bridge might be split into multiple levels
