TOS Klingons explained?

They didn't bother explaining why the Romulans had ridges in TNG but not in TOS.

They kind of did. Spock passes as a Romulan without suspicion in "Unification", thus both forehead styles coexist.

Mintakans were proto-Vulcans. With ridges.

Flat-foreheaded Vulcans and Romulans were perhaps just "more evolved".

DS9 copped out with "we don't talk about it" whilst the historically ignorant Starfleet slobs hadn't a clue why. Yuk.

There was talk about having Worf appear as a TOS-style Klingon whenever they were in that time period, without any explanation OR reaction from other characters. I wonder how people would have taken that.

That would've been brilliant. A bit weird mind you but brilliant.

Enterprise made a heroic effort to explain this.

I wouldn't say that DS9 copped out, simply because Worf's refusal to explain was so funny.
I agree ENT's effort to contribute to the continuity was worthy, but think DS9's was stronger because of the clever way it tied in to a classic episode.

I think what ENT tried to do was far too convoluted, and they should have just let them be. A two-part story? Really?
I don't think it was too convoluted. I mean, it's not like you had any trouble understanding it. They just added some detail about how the various Enterprise crew got involved.
BTW, I thought makeup of the transitioning Klingons was cleverly done.
The big problem for me was the ridiculous antagonism of the Klingons at the climax, prepared to kill Phlox even though he was near to a cure for their plague. I guess that if the studio wants a "ticking clock", the writers have to provide it...

There were a fair number of Romulans in TOS who wore helmets. The senior officers and the one centurion wore no helmets and were smooth foreheaded, the ones wearing the helmet could have been lower ranked. Indicating that the smooth forehead were (at the time) the social and political elite.

Later the tables turned.

Underneath those helmets, they also all had facial tattoos a la ST09. ;)

They should have left it that way - with just Worf's joke. Although the episodes that describe the reasons are decent in and of themselves - it's SUPER geeky - like beyond all levels of reasonable geekness - to try to create some ex post facto explanation for the fact that less money was spent on makeup in the 60's show.

This is Star Trek - I don't think 'super geeky' counts as a criticism. Besides, the eps worked, so why not?

I like the ENT explaination, its as good as any other.
Now if only they could explain the sexist female uniform of TOS, why there were no female captains in the 23rd century, and why the USS Enterprise only had one alien named Spock yet was supposed to present a multi species called The Federation yet no one sued Starfleet for speciesm?

Thing is when Worf went back in time to the K7 spacestation why didn't he lose his ridges and bumps if the virus was still in effect at that time? Plot hole or what?

I'm not a TOS specialist, but I believe there was one episode where a Starfleet ship was said to be crewed by Vulcans (before it was destroyed).

Miniskirts become hugely popular again in the 23rd century, and everyone just rolls with it.
why there were no female captains in the 23rd century,
Ummm... best ignored, that bit.

If you watch the old cartoon series, the first movie or the new movies, there are loads of other aliens on board the Enterprise. They only come out when the budget allows - I guess in TOS they're always just off-camera.;)

1.The miniskirts being a fashion icon in a military organisation
I read a fanfiction story by a female writer who did a parody that the Admiralty changed the uniform to short dresses to increase male recruitment lol

2. No female captains in TOS according to Turnabout Intruder
Well lets just say Kirks ex was crazy so was spouting rubbish. Or the whole of the Federation went culturally backward after the Romulan War when it comes to gendar politics in the armed forces. Or the success of Kirk's five year mission resulted in rapid increased promotions for females and a change in uniform to those onesies in TMP. Or Starfleet lost a sex discrimination lawsuit.

3. No aliens in TOS, USS Enterprise, except Spock
In TOS all the other aliens were non bridge crew or were assigned to the beta shift and nighwatch lol OR Spock's presence was a test case, prior to this all ships were segregated by speices. OR Admiral T'Pol did a report that suggested working with humans resulted in drug addiction lol
