"The Holiest Thing" Released

Not anymore. The Holiest Thing hit post in the spring of 2015, and Mark Lewis, myself, and Ryan Block busted our asses over the next 8 months to finish it. The only things already done were Tobias' space shots. The shuttle interiors and the shot of the explosion from orbit, all the Crater scenes, all the Sickbay scenes, Viewscreen shots, and massive rebuilding in audio had to be done in those 8 months. We effectively had to rebuild the show from the ground up in 8 months. Had I had the time, I would have redone all the shots of the outpost on the surface, but those that we had were basically acceptable.

As I said, over 150 individual VFX shots. Between two people, myself and Ryan Block.

The VFX were amazing. Loved the call back to the TAS environment force fields. Pretty cool,
I liked the nod. it did result in a sort of unintentional side effect, namely that the glowing edge made the actors look like they were pasted on top of the scene in a way they wouldn't have minus said effect. :)

Nah, you don't have to overact to pull off Kirk. But some actors in particular parts have that je ne sais quoi that other don't. Gross, like a lot of people playing Captains in fanfilms, so far lacks a certain gravitas. They don't feel like they're in charge. They don't own the bridge, so to speak.
This. When Bill Shatner's Kirk walked onto the bridge, you knew who was in charge. I felt that same way with Chris Pine's version of Kirk. I think James Cawley had some of that authoritative swagger, too (no doubt helped by his work as an Elvis impersonator). It's hard to nail that look and feel, and I don't think Brian has done it yet. That said, I think he's quite talented, and could have it, if he works on it.

By the way, was this John Kelley's last episode as McCoy? I thought I saw something about a new actor for the next episode!

"The Holiest Thing" was John Kelley's last full episode with us. He was superseded by Jeff Bond in "Mind-Sifter" (already released) and in "Torment of Destiny" (slated to be our next release). (John actually returned to the role of McCoy as a favor to Alec Peters in the short Axanar vignette "Heroes" we shot in October.)

Aw. He was my favorite actor in the production (no offense to anyone else at all intended). :(
Still, I'll have to go back and rewatch "Mind Sifter", as I had initially watched it on a very small screen and didn't notice the change in McCoys. :P

:techman:

That said, I personally found the VFX more impressive than much of the script and acting. But I'm always impressed by all the hard work and dedication many of the fanfilms put in.

Finished watching it. The music was satisfactory. Spock needed to spend more time with The Disciplines, unless this is a lead in to his pursuit of Kolinahr in the last episode.
I am a fan of continuity porn, if it is an integral part of the plot.

Went back to rewatch. The Ferengi should not have been seen until TNG.
The pregnancy came a little late based on Merritt Butrick's age. No real problem with the appearance of protomatter, except maybe from the Ferengi.

I guess it goes without saying that we will not be seeing Heroes now?!

The Axanar "Heroes" vignette is a production of Alec Peters and the Axanar team--filmed on the NV sets. What ultimately becomes of the vignette is up to the Axanar producing team. We just granted them use of our studio resources for their production.

I've got no problem with Ferengi in TOS era. TNG era already had continuity issues with the Ferengi throughout it's run.

Exactly. The Last Outpost is almost the continuity error, in retrospect. Both later TNG and DS9 don't really follow either the 'newly introduced aliens' thing, or the personalities and traits shown in that episode. I have no problem with the occasional interaction between the Federation and the Ferengi prior to TNG. After all, Data seems to know a lot about them in that episode, that must have come from somewhere.

Watched The Holiest Thing yesterday. Overall, I rather enjoyed it. Consistently, New Voyages is the fan production I enjoy the most. The production values are consistently very good for a fan film, the acting passable at least, and in particular the costuming, set design and CGI is basically flawless. Others have pointed out that only the Enterprise looks 60s, and there is some truth to this, but I don't think it detracts from the experience at all.
I would have liked to see a bit more of an 'A' plot to this episode, the mystery of the terraforming colony works as a story but needed a few more layers to it. And I'm not 100% sure on the protomatter introduction. I was under the mistaken impression Carol knew about the protomatter in TWOK/TSFS so it made perfect sense when I watched it, but this thread reminded my addled brain that it was David who used protomatter. Not impossible for David to have picked up the idea from Carol's notes on these events, of course, it was always kind of silly that Carol wouldn't know how a fundamental part of the project she led worked.

The Kirk/Carol romance which has divided the thread... Initially, made perfect sense. In fact, it was a standard Kirks-woman-of-the-week plot with perhaps a bit more feeling than usual. Nice chemistry and a James Bond style love scene. But that last scene... good lord. Totally wrong-footed and out of place. It was going so well, too. Set up Kirk and Carol. Set up how she got pregnant, and Kirk's loneliness in command. Then have her walk away with a bit of a poignant line implying they'll see each other again. You can even throw in a line about different worlds to set up her objection to Kirk knowing David. And it's all perfect. There is no need, continuity wise, for the last scene to happen in this story. It undermines the romance up to that point and you exit the episode thinking 'da fuck?' instead of 'hey that was a cool episode'. We know that Kirk, many years later, would regret choosing his career over romance - this is the set-up for his scene in Generations. But we also know from that scene and from the dialogue with Carol in TWOK that as a young man, he did exactly that - chose his captain's chair over family or settling down with someone.

So given the circumstances that's a no then :P

Well, given "the circumstances," the Axanar team seems surprisingly undeterred in a variety of ways. I'm not convinced that the Axanar team won't attempt to release this new vignette. Interestingly, this "in process" vignette had escaped the attention of Paramount/CBS in their recent lawsuit. Since it has not specifically been identified as an infringement the way the other Axanar Works have been, the Axanar team might believe releasing the vignette would be acceptable to Paramount/CBS.

In short: deciding to release this Axanar vignette even now? Axanar has done even stranger things.

Would them releasing it cause you any concern in if they release it, and it becomes a discussion point in the lawsuit (assuming it goes to trial and no settlement is reached); in that you allowed Axanar to make use of your studio facilities to produce it - possibly causing Paramount/CBS to have to bring your Fan Film production activities to light and perhaps prompting a legal response/action of some kind from Paramount/CBS as a result?

Great episode, belongs as part of TOS five year mission. The 1701-Phase II Refit looks awesome nacelles and all.

For all his faults Mr Cawley at least seemed to be in charge.

Compared to John Broughton in Farragut or Alec in his limited Garth footage I'd say Cawley's not that bad as a captain, really. Brian just doesn't have the swagger or machismo to play Kirk, I'm afraid. He's eager enough in his portrayal, but ultimately miscast.

Oh, probably. I'm not sure how much our playing nicely and cooperatively with Paramount and CBS' "rules" as best we understand them actually inoculates us from future actions--or from being swept up in any legal actions against Axanar. I think being "unconcerned" about the matter might be a little naïve.
