Is this the part where we wait?

The lull after the Christmas Special.

Remember when we only had to wait until Easter for new Doctor Who? Has it been said when the new season plans to air?

This is part of why I almost stopped watching the show last year. 9 month breaks are not good for keeping me interested.

It's more than likely come back in the fall. But nine months is nothing compared to the 16 year wait between the two series.

I'm so entitled I can't stand to wait one week for a new episode.

'Twas announced last year but this is the first I've heard of BBC America picking it up. Good to hear.

I'm really starting to get worried that we're not going to get a full season of Doctor Who this year, though. They'd have to start filming pretty soon, wouldn't they? This has to be driving BBC America *nuts*.

And then this gets announced...

Doctor Who spin-off "Class" set in a contemporary London school. I'd almost wonder if it were going to be starring Jenna Coleman, but that seems unlikely.

It's not starring Jenna Coleman. That was confirmed shortly after the series was announced.

However, we don't know who it is starring in Class. What we know at this point is still quite vague and undefined.

I didn't have any doubt that BBC America would pick it up.

For a full season this year? Yes, filming would need to start in the next week or two.

I haven't spoken with any of my contacts at BBC America in a while, but I can't imagine they're happy at the prospect of no Doctor Who season this fall.

The shoot begins in April. At best that means aa short run before Christmas, like 2012. More likely nothing till the Christmas special and a season in 2017.
No, I don't understand it either.

Meh. I'm alright waiting. There's plenty of stuff to watch. My DVR is set to record Dr. Who, so, unless there's a power outage... I'm all set.

I'm surprised that we haven't already heard about the new companion, tbh. We heard about the departure of the Ponds and of Clara so far in advance that the expectation and wait was actually written into the plot.

The media circus around knowing that Jenna would be taking the role was deliberately used by Moffat to surprise us in "Asylum of the Daleks". And then we knew she was leaving during the entire length of season 9, and again that knowledge by the public was used in the storyline. Moffat has learned how to use inevitable publicity leaks to his benefit.

So I'm surprised that we haven't heard anything about who is taking over from Jenna already, and I can only assume that that is also deliberate and for a very specific reason. Assuming the show will broadcast in the autumn again, then as has been said filming must start soon, so he must have decided on whatever it is by now. And there has to be a reason he's not telling us. It is somebody we already know? Is there not just one character but a different one every week?

Note that I'm not actually upset about this - I'm quite happy to wait until I see it on my screen.

.

Maybe the route Tom Baker wanted...no companion.

If people have complained about the show being too much the Companion's stories since Rose, and more so since Amy or Clara, what will it be like without one? Just the Doctor without the audience character. Without someone there to ask the questions. Without the human there to let the Doctor see the universe as something more than just stuff.

I remember when Class was first announced. There was a universal lack of enthusiasm from fans which I don't see changing soon.

Also, wasn't Class already the name of a CBBC show with Sam & Mark (where a couple of frogs blow up a newly built science block on the day of the opening ceremony)?
I seem to recall it never got past a pilot episode.

Hm..... A companion-free season..... I could dig that. A fresh companion every episode, someone from the time/place he is at that moment to help with the problem. COuld work.

I'm assuming that the role hasn't yet been cast -- and may not even be entirely clear conceptually to Moffat and Minchin yet -- but assuming that it has...

There's no reason to announce the role now. They'll announce shortly before filming begins. And we should also get an idea of what their broadcast plans are for series 10.

I very much doubt that. Moffat needs the publicity boost a companion announcement gets (to remind people that Doctor Who exists) and a reason for people to tune back in. A series of solo Doctor adventures or Doctor and celebrity one-offs companions would be conceptually interesting -- I, as a fan, would be quite curious -- but it's not the move that Moffat needs to resucitate the show's flagging fortunes.

I realize I'm painting a picture of "doom and gloom," but I'm looking at it in the way that the beancounters probably are.

Do we know that Who's shoot is in April? It's widely said that Sherlock's shoot is in April, and Class has to fit in there, too. And considering that Moffat intended to leave Who with "Husbands," it's not unreasonable to suspect that he's well behind on his Who prep, especially with Sherlock bearing down.

They did that during Tennant's movie season. Not sure how well it went down.

I'd prefer they have a companion but make it a screamer like the days of old. Bring the Doctor back to the foreground; it's his show after all.

Class sounds dull. Much rather they used my spin off idea. :)

The media circus around knowing that Jenna would be taking the role was deliberately used by Moffat to surprise us in "Asylum of the Daleks".
Actually, no. The role of Oswin in Asylum of the Daleks was originally meant to be a one time guest star played by any actress. After Jenna Coleman was cast as Clara, Moffat thought she would be good to play Oswin and subsequently cast her in this role too. It was because of this that The Snowmen underwent a last minute re-write so that Victorian Clara would be killed off and not be the companion as originally planned, thus setting off a cascade of re-writes for the second half of the season. Though I believe Neil Gaiman was the only one who had to do any serious changes.

So I'm surprised that we haven't heard anything about who is taking over from Jenna already, and I can only assume that that is also deliberate and for a very specific reason. Companions are almost always cast a month before they begin filming. That has been the case with Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, and Karen Gillan. Coleman was the anomaly, but even then she was only cast two months prior when her filming started. If the start of filming date being April as reported above is accurate, than the earliest well hear about the new companion is February, but we might not even hear anything until March.

Sherlock starts shooting in April. I'd be amazed if DW starts until that's finished so we're probably looking at July. So basically no series this year.
