Galavant, Second Season

Well, the first season was barely worth a thread it seems... But SOMEHOW this show got renewed, and the first two episodes (of a five-week double-sode bonanza) have aired. Thoughts?

It was thoroughly middling for me - and I like a good musical. Despite its pedigree, the songs and general goofiness got int he way of the bare semblance of plot they had. Probably for the better, I suppose, but it WAS enjoyable overall.

Now we have a second season quickly re-arranging the characters into different teams and pairing Galavant with IMO the best character of the show, which should be a good move. The songs are still just okay, the singers about the same, and happily there are even MORE in-jokes to just about everything - even the title of the premiere is "A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear".

I'm still scratching my head as to how this show even got renewed. But what the hell, I'll tune in for the new season, chuckle for a bit, and then be surprised as it AGAIN evades cancellation despite the fact that no one is watching it.

I absolutely loved the first season, and I thought the second was off the great start.
I can't really judge the songs on a technical standpoint, but they are hilarious.
I did like the way they have kind of mixed up the cast set up from last season. Richard and Galavant is already a lot of fun.
I am a little annoyed that they are using a miscommunication to make Isabella think Galavant doesn't love her anymore, those kind of plots drive me crazy.

I recently saw this
cause I was curious
for which role auditioned John Baaaarroooowmaaaan.

Now I hooked all my friends
and made them into fans
by forcing them to watch that Gaaalavaaant!

I think it’s great that I came here so late
which means I did not have to wait

Now! it finally is back!
Everyone’s back on track!
Isabella and Gaaaaaalaaaaaavaaaaaant!

What the song says. I wasn't even aware of this show until some months ago John Barrowman mentioned on Twitter having auditioned for it - but apparently didn't fit in. I'm still holding out hope for a future guest spot. For months I was reluctant to watch it as it was pitched to me as Monty Python like which is a humor that just leaves me scratching my head.

But once I started to watch it I couldn't stop. It's very easy to get sucked in, but it probably helps if you are a fan of musicals in general, and of Alan Menken in particular. His "Arielle" and "Beauty and the Beast" are among my favorite Disney movies and I love all the songs. In season 1, he even had a few notes reference to "Kiss the girl".

And I love how many different music styles they had in the show - from Barbershop monks to Pirate shanties. And all the landscape - right in the first frew minutes I spotted the Cathedral of Wells, a place I have been to back in 2006 and therefore recognized it immediately, even if it was only shown for a second from the outside. All little things that add to the viewing experience.

It's just meant to be fun, some good-looking people singing and dancing once in a while, and season 2 is off to a good start. I agree though that the cliché of the misunderstanding is a bit overused. I expected him to arrive to rescue her but her being gone on her own journey and them keeping missing each other.

I'll have to rewatch last night's episode because I was distracted through most of it, but I loved the first season and have been looking forward to this one.

It's only Monty Python like to someone who has never seen Monty Python.

It's much more Mel Brooks than Python.

Exactly. It's right on the nose Mel Brooks.
Sidenote: I like you and your posts more and more, especially since they make me look at that picture again and again :adore:

I must admit that I don't know much of Mel Brooks either, aside from (again) a blonde John Barrowman singing "Springtime for Hitler".

But I think the excuse "I grew up in Eastern Germany and we didn't have Western German TV" doesn't work anymore 25 years later, so I probably should catch up with it. If you say it's good?

I'm probably over-analyzing this way too much but...

If Richard and Madalena never had sex then technically their marriage wouldn't be valid. So when Madalena started giving orders and taking over, she actually didn't have any right to do so.

But I can see why Richard wouldn't have brought up that little fact. He's not too bright. The guy didn't know his wife was getting it on with the jester, and given how he was embarrassed about being a virgin, that's another reason why he wouldn't have said anything.

I'm just rambling a bit.

I'm pretty miffed they didn't release season one on DVD before the new season came out. That's how you advertise, man! I'm having trouble remember the old events, and I would love to watch them again.

Apparently they are available on digital download but I too would have loved a dvd release and hope they are for some reason saving it up for a two season set for christmas.

I agree with JD though as that seems like the only major downside for me so far, especially seen as they seemed to be avoiding it with a wink and a nudge. Am I misremembering but did they not have her say something that sounded bad but Galavant quickly saw it as the orb playing up, gave the device a smack and moved on from the joke?

Enjoy this one. Just a silly, entertaining romp, not trying to be too serious. It's just different, which is refreshing.

Watch Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs. You'll definitely know if you love Mel Brooks by the end of the first film you watch.

Yeah, that kind of surprised me too. Luckily I found the complete first season on Hulu and was able to get through them again last week. That was the only time I was glad they had such a short season.

Nah, skip Spaceballs and watch History of the World Part 1.

Spaceballs is definitely second tier Mel Brooks.

I've had the opening song (first season) stuck in my head for the past 24 hours!
Just checking back – is it still there? I’ve had it for a whole week… and it keeps coming back. I don’t mind though! It IS a great and catchy song. I also plan to buy the released music of the series. I hear that many songs had to be cut for time and that there are lots more verses originally.
Maybe you want to contribute to this ;)

Thanks! I remember now that many years ago a friend praised Spaceballs when it was on TV and I tried it but gave up after a short time. I’m not a Star Wars fan and didn’t find any of it funny. In general it is better for the understanding of a spoof if you know and love the originals. Then again, I did enjoy Galaxy Quest without knowing Star Trek at the time. I watched it with Stargate eyes instead, which worked as well. Conventions are the same everywhere!

And I truly love for example a German movie called Der Schuh des Manitu which I hear was even shown in America because it was so immensely successful and I always wondered about that. The Karl May kult movies from the Sixties were a very German/European phenomenon. Then again there were enough general Western references in it that Americans probably could laugh about it as well without knowing the context. And the producers then went on to produce an equally successful sci-fi comedy with lots of TOS and other sci-fi elements which I also enjoyed even though I may not have gotten all the jokes at the time. I’m doing this all backwards ;) Should probably watch it again, now that I finally caught up with TOS.

Thank you, I shall try one of the other Mel Brooks movies then. I shall see what my library has. No opinions on The Producers? I’m a bit wary here of the theme. I have the modern version of the movie but never watched it in full.
