Han Solo From SWANH vs. Han Solo From SWTFA(BEWARE MAJOR SPOILERS

I don't know the fright and surprise on Hans face makes me think he didn't expect to die.

I think being insta-stabbed with a blade of pure energy would be a tad shocking, don't you think?

Yup. Still he seemed shocked that his son would stab him. He really thought he wasn't going to die.

Based on the hesitation Han had before he stepped on that rail-less walkway, I think he strongly felt there was a possibility he may die. He and Leia both knew the 'monster' Ben had become, but Han wanted to live up to his promise to bring his son home.

He failed.:sigh::weep:

I hope that Luke does die by the end of this series....What could be more appropriate than having him nodding his approval as a Force ghost at the end of Episode IX?

As for Leia's role...I think they're giving her as little to do as possible. Her performance couldn't have had less life in it if they'd rolled her out on life support.

Uhg. Luke nooding his approval at the end of the series just like obi wan did in Retrun. Corny and not original. No thanks. I would rather him train Jedi again.

Yeah he was so scared that he stupidly walked out onto a dangerous catwalk. He could have gotten his son to come to him or shouted to him instead. Anyone watching knew that if Han walked out he was going over the edge with a lightsaber wound. It was so obvious. His son just committed genocide of 5 planets up to that point. Most rational people would have took precautions. What a dumb way to die.

The only way Han had any hope of reaching out to his son was to present himself as vulnerable as possible. Had he taken 'precautions' he ran the risk of tipping Kylo even further off the edge on grounds of fear and distrust. Yes, what Han did backfired but it was the only possible course of action that had any hope of succeeding.

Exactly.

Of course, it didn't help that Han was presented in the film at his most lovable-est, which makes his death even more... heartbreaking.

Keeping mind on his blaster was a precaution he could easily have taken.

Which Kylo would have sensed. Han's plan was to be as open as possible. If he went in there plotting escape routes it would have demonstrated distrust and fear which would have pissed Kylo off even more.

Han saw first hand his sons work. He killed scores of people. Why be as open as possible. When you are trying to negotiate with a dangerous enemy that is armed and dangerous that enemy would of course know that you are going to take your own precautions while you are talking. Han stupidly went out onto the catwalk. Another dumb move. Totally out of character for Solo.

In ANH, Han ran screaming at the top of his lungs towards a lone stormtrooper, who led him to a larger group of stormtroopers. And this action is within a dangerous space station filled with a group that would rather kill than capture.

In ESB, Han decided to go into a asteroid field. And while it was dangerous, it also made sense.

So Han wasn't out of character. He was his old - pun not intended - self. As Han said in TFA, he usually takes an action before actually thinking about it.

An asteroid field isn't a person. Han was a expert flyer with the Falcon. Stormtroopers of the OT era sucked. Han and chewie were armed they didn't chase those troopers with their hands in their pockets. Han knew his son and knew what he had done. To blindly think he could turn his son after he was a part of killing billions was ridiculous. He picked the wrong time to try and turn his son. On a catwalk during a mission. No way. Also to tenderly touch his murderous sons face was totally idiotic.

I've already explained why; it's a 'cards on the table' moment. He was trying to reconnect with his son, not negotiate with terrorists.

Oh. Okay, for a moment I thought we had an actual discussion going on but really you're just one of 'those guys' aren't you. Nevermind.

Also...

To blindly think he could turn his son after he was a part of killing billions was ridiculous.

...it's almost as though Luke didn't try (and succeed with) the exact same thing with his father in ROTJ...

Han Solo tried to talk his son back the light. It looked for a moment like it might work. He did give his word to Leia that he'd do it. ("Do or do not, there is no try") He failed. The light went out in a literal sense.

Leia knows it is possible to bring someone back from the Dark Side. Luke managed with her father. Her mother's last moments were a belief that there was still good in Anakin Skywalker. Luke tested that theory and was eventually proven correct. Leia knows this, and hopes her son can be brought back. That is what parents are suppose to do.

One thing to note: Ren was on the Star Destroyer that was going to go off looking for BB-8. He wasn't part of the firing of the Hyperlasers. He got a view from orbit. It wasn't his plan, it was Hux's plan. Ren's concern is Skywalker, the Jedi, and that map. Hux is all about taking out the Republic.

I thought it was an interesting touch when Rey and Finn come into the area where the explosives were being placed, the light from the sun Starkiller base is taking power from is shining onto Rey and Finn...and Han and Ben. Once that light goes out I felt myself saying, "Oh, no." (And this was the second time I saw the film).

There's no way this is a serious critique.

It is a serious critique. A character like Han Solo going out that way was not true to the character. At least Chewie was written properly. He didn't trust Kylo and watched everything. Too bad he wasn't faster with his bow caster. Hans death reminds me of the horrible death Captain Kirk had on his particular catwalk. Another terrible death for a great character.
