... The gritty, sand-like material that Kylo Ren drops his helmet into as he's interrogating Rey inside that same chamber? There was no explanation in the film itself as to what that stuff was and I haven't read the movie's novelization, but apparently that gritty residue is none other than the cremated remains of Anakin Skywalker which were retrieved from the long-extinguished funeral pyre on Endor when Darth Vader's partially-melted helmet was recovered.

So....Anakin does appear in all seven films thus far. Technically. ;)

I figured they were Anakin/Vaders ashes while watching the movie. Kylo or someone else went to the ewok home world to get the helmet and of course the ashes were still there. I think Kylo throwing the helmet in the ashes were to let us know they came as a set.:)

I guessed that as well but now that I think of it, those Ewoks wouldn't have immediately trust Ren, treating him like they do with most outsiders, with hostility. Do you think they were harmed when the helmet was retrieved? I'm starting to think they were.

Hopefully the Ewoks steered clear of Kylo Ren's ship when it touched down near the site of Vader's funeral pyre. Hopefully they weren't thinking: "Our Rebel Alliance friends are back! Let's go say Hi to them!"

Vader may not have wiped them out but Kylo seems to take less crap than his grandfather did, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd appreciate cuddly, furry creatures.

Well, as strange as it is, the Ewok were able to stand up against an army of Stormtroopers. Maybe knowing this and the fact that Ewoks eat humans, Ren waited until it was clear before retrieving the helmet.

Yub Nub means "Human flesh is so tender and juicy" in Ewok language. No wonder George changed the end music of Episode VI to John Williams' "Victory Celebration."

The Ewoks did have help, and the stormtroopers have frail armor and limited accuracy anyway. ;) :D

I can't get enough of all the stupid internet memes and pictures about the Riot Guard Stormtrooper. It really cracks me up

He's the new Captain Robau.

We also had alot of variations on a stormtrooper

A competent Stormtrooper?

A stormtrooper with a conscience? Finn

A puppy dog stormtrooper? Daniel Craig as JB-007

Stormtroopers that know it's not a good idea to upset Kylo Ren

J.J certainly added variety to the goons of the movie

It's fascinating how they took the stormtroopers seriously this time, even though they were mocked quite heavily in pop culture, and how they treated redshirts in trek, giving in to the pop culture mockery.

Some reason, I always figured Vader's gravesite would have been avoided by Endor's lifeforms. Seem to recall a bit in the old EU about how nothing grew at the site and it was cold in the force or something like that.

It makes you wonder how long Vader's armor and cremated remains were there before Kylo Ren or somebody else connected to him retrieved them. In the 30 years since Jedi I guess none of the Ewoks, victorious Rebels or other native life-forms and visitors to Endor took notice of the partially-melted cybernetic armor, wondered what happened there and scavenged the site.

Taking the Stormtroopers seriously might be a holdover from the Clone Wars cartoon where the Clones were taken seriously.

The Rebels cartoon still doesn't take Stormtroopers seriously, but gives a few reasons why they suck. Garbage armor for one. Non-cooperative training for another (every man for himself)

The First Order Troopers seem to be better trained and equipped than Imperial Stormtroopers. Not as well trained as Republic Clone Troopers, but the First Order troopers might have better equipment.

At the very least, their helmets look like they offer a slightly better field of vision than the old stormtrooper helmets.

Luke captured a shuttle, and had an entire "forest moon" to pick locations from. There's no reason to believe he cremated Vader anywhere near walking distance of the Ewok village or any other settlement.

Although it's a planet choked with wildlife, many species of which are sentient. Close to an Ewok village or a tribe of other creatures not, it's still good that something survived long enough to be found and recovered.

I guess Luke mentioned at some point that he cremated his father's remains and more or less where the funeral pyre was located. Kylo remembered those details over the years and once he fell to the Dark Side and abandoned his Jedi training he took a ship and used sensors to pinpoint the spot on Endor. Vader's metal helmet would have been one of the only non-organic materials in that entire area.

Who says they were still on Endor? For all we know, Luke took them somewhere, a place to keep his father's remains. And Kylo knew, since it was his grandfather's remain, and Luke (at that time) so no reason to keep that from him.

I mean, I highly doubt Luke would leave his father's remains just there. And, honestly.... Rain, wind, storms, whatever.... the changes that after years and years the ashes were still exactly there......

Everything else seemed to have its place, but this did not conform. A stain that seemed to absorb all other senses, casting waves of leftover darkness that caused the creatures on Endor to avoid the place instinctively.
[...]
The ground surrounding the old burned area remained dead and brown. Though the thick forests of Endor were tenacious and fast-growing, no plants dared approach the scar - even after seven years.
[...]
He jerked his hand away, then brought it back. The spot was cold, but the coldness seemed to go away as his hands grew numb.

OK, I just saw it last night and have attempted to catch up with this thread, but 2/3 of the way through, I'm ready to share my own thoughts, so forgive me if I retread on anything brought up in the last third of this massive thread.

Poll-wise, I chose the "B" option. I don't literally agree with its description--the description for the "B" option is too strong, while the description for the "A" option is too generic--but feel that the film deserves better than the "C" option.

I went into this knowing that the film was a beat-for-beat rehash of ANH, so taking that as a given, I felt like it was reasonably well-done. ANH is now going on 40, and if this film weren't part of an ongoing series, we likely would have gotten a complete remake by now. I'll take setting up a new generation of characters in the ongoing setting over a complete do-over with a recasting of the original characters, thank you.

I didn't come into this for the new characters, but I felt that they were well-realized for the most part...in stark contrast to the forced roles and cringeworthy acting of the PT. The exception for me was Poe, who seemed pretty generic...and yeah, his return needed a little something more. "How come you're still alive?" "Cuz I didn't die." "OK."

I don't think Rey qualifies as a Mary Sue because they're clearly setting her up for a role of central importance in the new series. The Mary Sue label applies to author-insert characters who outshine the central heroes of an established setting. She and the rest of the new cast are being set up as the new central heroes of this setting...the original cast are there to mentor and pass the torch.

On that note...I went through the entire film assuming that she was Luke's daughter. The fact that they chose not to get that out of the way in this film makes me think that maybe it's a little too obvious and they have something different going on with her mystery. Here's a bit of pure speculation that's liable to be controversial (and I doubt if J.J. would choose to go in this direction): What if she's another "convergence" (if I'm recalling the term used in TPM correctly), immaculately conceived like Anakin? That would make her something pretty special in the setting worth all the mystery, and would give her a figurative but not literal kinship to Luke.

I didn't mind the portrayal of Kylo Ren because Darth Vader was such a hard act to follow, I get why they wouldn't try to outdo him on his own level. Instead, what we got was more of an Anakin done right. The new NotSith was always going to be a Vader wannabe, so they literally made him that in the film.

"Snoke" is a really horribly silly name for the new head honcho amongst the bad guys. He really deserves more than one syllable at least...way too many one-syllable names amongst the new characters.

Okay - here's an article written by one of my best friends.

It contains NO spoilers but, I'd classify it as REQUIRED reading before seeing TFA. It basically distills all of the lead in books and media that spans the time between ROTJ and TFA.

It's a bit long but it SHOULD answer all of your questions.

Or to put it succinctly - It's all Mon Mothma's fault!

I found this helpful, but given this post's stated intention--informing people who haven't seen the movie without spoiling them--wouldn't this be better placed in the non-spoiler thread?
