Star Wars: The Force Awakens Reviews (SPOILER-FREE THREAD)

I saw the big Kylo Ren and Luke spoilers on Wikipedia, and the Han one in the spoiler thread. Honestly all of these just make me want to see it more.

Even that's too much information.

Please don't.

Yeah. Seriously.
Sorry. I figured as long as I didn't say what the spoilers were I'd be ok.

Apology accepted.

I've seen it. It's really very good, but... (cont'd in spoiler thread)

Thought it was a solid 7/10 movie. Good, but nothing more. Too much of a rehash of A New Hope to the point of predictability.

The reviews were way over the top, but that isn't a surprise.

I fear this will be my reaction as well.

Oh well. I'll know for sure in a little under 12 hours.

I saw THAT scene last night (someone put cell phone video on the net- think it's gone now). Makes me just want to see it more.

I really really liked the lightsaber action in this movie though, we barely see a lightsaber and when we do it isn't immediately used. When it is used, it's just like a lightsaber fight - no flippy shit where it looks like they're dancing ala the prequels, closer to the originals while still be faster and more intense.

Looks like George Lucas won after all.

I really liked the film, but it's far from perfect. It leans waaay too heavily on riffing Ep4, and it reeks of "we'll set it up now for later" storytelling, but overall a solid effort. I just hope that this one is very Ep4 to ease us back in before the follow-ups veer off into new territory.

If nothing else, it has the advantage to being better than the prequels in almost every way. The fun factor has been missing for so long!

I liked how each fighter sort of had their own style. Ren basically hacks like he has a broadsword, some are clumsy, some stabbed and dodged as opposed to doing a lot of swinging, blocking and parrying etc.

Oh, and they didn't just have Ren's 'cross guard' be completely useless eye candy.

My Review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I give it 4.75 out of 5.

Of course, No Spoilers.

It will very much remind you of A New Hope. It will remind you of The Empire Strikes Back. It will remind you a very little of The Holiday Special (if you've seen it). There's even one scene that reminded me of the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye and another scene reminds me of the book Han Solo at Star's End. If you've read any of the Expanded Universe, it will probably remind you of that (somewhat). It does have a not-quite-Star-Wars feel to it sometimes. Maybe that's when it reminds me of The Holiday Special. The special effects are outstanding and virtually flawless.

There's no Jar Jar type characters. I thought Carrie Fisher would look old - she really looks Formidable. I'd hate to have a stare-down contest with her. She'd win. Harrison Ford just can't run like he used to, although he can joke just as well. Daisy Ridley was great. John Boyega was great. Oscar Isaac was great. Chewbacca hasn't aged a day. BB-8 fits in well with the other two droids. What the hell kinda name is Snoke? Adam Driver isn't going to win an acting award for this one. And the plot kick in the gut - you'll kinda see it coming.

And finally...

I just can't believe Obi-Wan is really Luke and Leia's Father.

I'm kidding - it was Jar Jar.

Reading the novelization on Kindle now. I'm not seeing the movie until the crowds die down or are gone completely, so this will tide me over until then. I like the opening crawl.

I just got back and had a great time.

It felt like the first new Star Wars movie in 32 years. It was like the prequel trilogy didn't count. Seriously.

JJ Abrams brought back the spirit of Star Wars, something that was missing from the prequel trilogy. But you probably know that by now.

There's even one scene that reminded me of the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye...
I know what you mean.

Indeed.

I LOATHE that stupid scene in ROTS where they're just standing there twirling their lightsabres at each other.

It's just SO FUCKING STUPID.

If it was me, when the other guy was twirling, I'd just thrust in and chop him in the gut.

That scene, more than ANY OTHER in the whole PT sums up that whole fucking mess - we're doing this thing because it looks KEWL!!!!!1!!!!!1 NOT because it makes ANY fucking SENSE.

BULLSHIT.

This movie felt much more like the original trilogy. I found myself wanting more at the end.

Oh, and the lightsaber duels are one of the few aspects of the prequel trilogy that I like. They are energetic and very reminiscent of wuxia cinema. In a way that flowery fighting style even illustrates how arrogant and self-assured the Jedi order had become at that point in history.
