I’ll just preface this thread by saying that I really enjoy Capaldi in the role, especially this series, and I hope he gets to do at least one more season but…the talk of a female Doctor has been increasing in recent years, and in the last season and a bit we’ve had two instances of male Timelords regenerating into women (though to be fair in one of those instances it seems the male incarnation was the anomalous one because she’d been a woman in her nine previous lives.)
Given the positive reaction of Michelle Gomez as Missy, a show that may be in need of a shot in the arm, and the increasing calls for it, whilst a female Doctor is by no means certain, it’s probably more likely now than it’s ever been.
So, with that in mind, let’s assume 12 regenerates at the end of series 10 into a woman. The question is Who?
This is just a bit of fun, and whilst I’m sure it won’t stop the “The Bible says thou shalt not have a female Doctor Who” brigade hopefully this will be just that, a bit of fun.
I have two actresses primarily in mind myself.
Nicola Walker (Spooks, Last Tango in Halifax, River) has been my number one choice as a female Doctor for a long time. This of course means that she’ll never get the job (Ask Patterson Joseph for further details
) but I think she’d be perfect. As an actress she can do comedy and drama, she can play scatty, she can be playful and she can play dangerous. Plus she has a smile that could light up a small city. She also has a curious alien quality reminiscent of Tom or Matt, and she’s had some experience with Who with Big Finnish where (I believe?) she was a companion to the Eighth Doctor.
If they can’t get Nicola then it has to be Olivia Colman, for pretty much similar reasons as Nicola Walker. Colman has pretty much done it all role wise and is equally adept at broad comedy as she is at grim drama. She’s a triple BAFTA winner and I’ve seen her play lovely a scatty, and vicious and nasty with equal aplomb. In terms of Who she was, of course, one of the manifestations of Prisoner Zero in The Eleventh Hour. Last seen in the Whoniverse chatting to Sean Pertwee at the beginning of The Fiveish Doctors bemoaning the fact that she hadn’t been asked to do the fiftieth.
