Why is DS9 400 behind all the other shows on Best shows list?

On the best shows list on top ten list -http://www.thetoptens.com/tv-shows/

DS9 is over 400 behind the rest of the shows, even enterprise is in front.

I don't hate enterprise as much as most people do but DS9 is a way better show.

    Does anyone know why?

There's a standard phrase in my country that, if literally translated, yields "unknown makes unloved". I think a main cause is that DS9 simply is not as well known as the other series.

Also, the DS9 setting is somewhat different from what is expected of trek: flying around in a starship having adventures, so that could put casual viewers off.

I think DS9 requires something of an initial investment to get to know the series -more so than the other treks-: you have to know something about the spirituality of the Bajorans, about the political structure of the Cardassians, Sisko juggling between his roles of Emissary and Starfleet captain, etc. All these things cannot be learned from just one or two episodes. Which is probably what most casual trek viewers would have given DS9 before deciding not to tune in anymore.

On the other hand, people who don't like trek in general aren't likely to watch an episode -- as it still says 'star trek' on the tin.

And of course, finally, there are those trek fans that simply don't like DS9.

This isn't "people," it's a totally unknown sample of Internet users. For DS9 to be that far behind the other shows is a sign of vote brigading by people determined to knock it way down the list; nothing more. It is a sign that a small number of people coordinated to tank its ratings on that particular site, for whatever reason. I wouldn't read too much into it.

There definitely is a type of snobbery against DS9 for some reason. That website mentioned is worthless but illustrates a point.

You can only up-vote shows on this list. You can't give a show a negative vote to force it further down the list.

I think it's more a case of that particular site's specific user base just not caring one way or the other about DS9.

Even Mad Men is ranked way down around 150.

Spongebob Squarepants is above Game of Thrones.

This is just an upvote/downvote system. Most people don't care and just scan for their favorites and the few people who do care aggressively mass-downvote things.

I see nothing wrong with that placement. ;) ;) :D

But, seriously, you're absolutely right when you say that things like this are pretty fluid. There isn't an online internet poll in existence whose results I've been able to 100% believe.

It's format, story arcs and large cast makes it hard to break into, a causal viewer can't occasionally watch it, slowly start to appreciate it, and then watch it stead.

Pick a random episode of the other four series and you'd stand a decent chance of grasping what going on, not with DS9.

For me, of the five Trek series, DS9 is in last place. It's not that I never watch it, but it's not as good as the others.

That poll has the overrated and 9/10 episodes dull and action-less The Walking Dead in the top 10. Sheeple TV. Nuff said.

Ranking is in the eye of the beholder. The arc make it lower because it's hard to get into...

I place it as the best of the series because it has great arcs.

There are more DS9 fans out there than Voyager and Ent fans. Just the people who don't like it feel more need to make a point about it.

    The Next Generation – 43%
    Voyager – 20%
    The Original Series – 19%
    Deep Space Nine – 13%
    Enterprise – 5%

StarTrek.com did a fairly large poll (conducted by the staff) in July of 2013, more than 25,000 people voted. These were the results.

20% of those polled must have been high or in need of clozapine.

DS9 was voted the best series in 2006 by the readers of the UK Star Trek magazine.

Just in my personal ramblings around the fandom it 'appears' that while DS9 and Voyager were once both low on the totem pole of the Star Trek Franchise but it appears that their stock seems to be rising of late. I don't know why that is. I 'think' Voyager's rise has to do with watching it on its own, not in tandem with DS9 as when it originally aired. I 'think' the rise in approval of DS9 has to do with fitting in with the more current trend of 'serial' drama.

But then I really have no idea. It could just be that people's own personal tastes change over the years.

I think you're right about DS9, but I wasn't aware of Voyagers stock rising...

It is. Part of that also might be young feminists seeing it for the first time. One full season passes the Bechdel Test before the Bechdel test was even a 'thing'.

    I honestly don't know.

I have said before my opinion of it changed. Before I was indifferent and now I really like it.

I would hasten to add though that I have ALWAYS liked DS9 although I stop short of calling myself a 'niner'.
