Too soon to say. I'll surely sign up to watch STAR TREK, once I figure out how this whole "streaming" thing works. Whether I'll sign off on CBS Access after Trek depends on what I think of the service once I've had some actual experience with it. In the meantime, I have a year or so before I have to worry about it. Why make any definite decisions now?

Is it just me, or is everybody in a big hurry to reach some sort of consensus or conclusions about a show that doesn't even exist yet?

What's the rush?

There's no rush to form a consensus or conclusion. We are just discussing the new show and it's distribution. I'm sure many people's opinions on whether to subscribe will change over the next 14 months.

On the other hand, if you don't want to discuss the new show then why are you in the "Future of Trek" sub-forum?

Oh, speculation and chatter is fine, although there's not really much to go on at this point. People just seem to be in hurry to pin things down on basis of a vague press release. Note that the thread title is not "How would you prefer to watch the new STAR TREK?" or "How do you expect you might watch the new STAR TREK?" but "How will you watch the new STAR TREK?"

As though we all need to stand up and be counted right this very minute . . ..

I swear, we're probably only hours away from someone posting a poll asking us to rate the new show sight unseen. :)

If that's the case, then I'll go on record right now.

I like it. :techman:

I did to begin with, but now it's starting to feel like it's dragging on too long. Especially since the actress playing my favorite character left the show.

Greg Cox: Didn't anyone tell you? We passed the self-congratulatory event horizon. It's no longer enough to celebrate 1 month "anniversaries" and 10 years of a video game franchise - we've begun actively being nostalgic for things that don't exist YET. ;)

Missing option: I'm hoping for the ability to watch it through one of the subscription services I'm already paying for to materialize before 2017, so, undecided.

If anyone was planning to pirate the show, do we think they would announce it on a poll? (I don't know if the poll is public or private, but it doesn't matter, because admins have ways... ;) )
I voted "Pirate" as a provocation. I am sure, however, that many will watch it that way, rather than pay for an additional service with an additional fee.

Personally, I shall not pay the additional $5.99 monthly to watch another Trek series. (If the pilot, airing on CBS here in the US, is good enough then I may wait and subscribe for one month to binge watch. I am a patient man. :vulcan: )

Arrrrrrr matie!! :) Actually, probably youtube. Youtube is not illegal, so I don't really consider that pirating. :) Just sayin'. :D

Unless, CBSAA has the entire season available early in 2017 instead of one episode a week. In that case, i'll do a one month binge. Not really sure how these new fangled subscription services work. Back in my day we just watched the shows on TV. :)

I won't be watching. I replaced Cable with Netflix/Local TC because Cable had become ridiculously over priced for what little I watched. I see no reason to pay $6 per month just to see the new Star Trek series. They should have offered it on Netflix instead of going home grown.

because they want all the money that's why and it is good business I think this is a good thing they are doing I will happily pay

On CBSAA CBS is making $6/subscriber - some bandwidth costs. On Netflix CBS is making a fraction of the $10 you pay for Netflix. ST'17 could have half the viewers on CBSAA as on Netflix and CBS would still come out ahead.

If you're really a Star Trek fan is $6 really too much for a new series? Pay for one month and binge on the show. You could even suspend your Netflix for that month and save money.

How dare you. Can I afford it yes. But I will not pay a dinosaur like CBS who tries to take their ball and go home. They like the rest of the dinosaur media is late to change. And now they're holding out hoping they can create a sustaining model with their limited content. I have no problem sitting through commercials on Netflix. What I have a problem with is being nickled and dimed to death by all these different entities. Or pay a cable company $100/mth for 5 - 10 channels which occasionally have something I want to see.

Funny, CBS creating CBSAA is the exact opposite of being a dinosaur. A dinosaur would continue to only have their broadcast shows and not let any streaming service have them to keep people paying for cable and watching ads on broadcast.

CBS is a network who's business is distributing media. Why would that network sell the media to someone else? CBS is experimenting with creating its own new distribution system. That's evolving. If they didn't do that and just sold to Netflix they'd die. Seems like you're asking for CBS to be a dinosaur to let the Netflix mammal take over.

So basically, you're just mad that the show won't be on a service you are already paying for.

Would you also be mad if the show were going to be on Hulu? Amazon? Showtime? Syfy Channel?

I'm not mad. I just refuse to subscribe to another service to get it. CBS can do what they like with their property. I just think these guys are late to the game and would have more exposure if they used one of bigger streaming services instead of trying to start a CBS only service.

And the poster I replied to had the gall to suggest I'm not a true fan because I won't pony up $6 per month to see a new show. That made me angry. I don't buy all the DVD's and blue rays and other merchandise. Does that mean I'm not a true fan?

If CBSAA can compete with Netflix and Prime in terms of offerings, I see no reason why one shouldn't pay for a service that they like. Let's say cable tv is $50/month. Instead of cable you have netflix at $10, CBSAA at $6 and Prime at $8.25 ($99 per year). Add in HULU at $10 and that's less than $35 per month; a savings of at least $15/per month over traditional cable.
I'd rather be nickle and dimed instead of spending tens or hundreds of dollars.
I think it's more likely that after it's first run they"ll start licensing to netflix and/or amazon.

Except your internet cost is likely slightly higher without a tv bundle, so your $15/month would then be more like $5/month. And you're missing content from a lot of cable channels and live sports. To me it's not worth the $5 savings. Of course this all depends on your exact cable package and which streaming services you want.

In terms of ending up on Netflix/Amazon, I doubt it. It's not like you see House of Cards on Amazon. There will be a Blu Ray release, and it wouldn't shock me if CBS eventually sells the show into syndication, but I doubt it ever ends up on Netflix unless CBSAA fails and all the CBS content is licensed elsewhere.

I don't have cable haven't had it since 2004 we my family I live with use Antennas to watch broadcast tv; we have internet through bundle with a landline phone Verizon to be precise. I have a Netflix through my one of my sisters and I now watch Game of Thrones through another sister courtesy of HBOGO so I can pay 6.00 dollars to watch Trek more people are cutting cords as they say and if you have a newer tv you can watch internet on a tv.

To the best of my knowledge, CBS all access is American only. Which means I'll be unable to watch the show when it airs.

I will NOT pirate the show. If I can't get it on iTunes when it airs, or DVD/Bluray a few weeks after it airs, I probably will not watch it :(

Which is sad because I am desperately hoping it is a continuation of the original timeline.
