Why CBS is taking the wrong approach to nutrek.

Alright if you can guess I'm quite upset about kurtzman being attached to the new series. Anyways long story I don't think I'm alone so I figure it's useful to have a thread dedicated to what the perceived flaws are in the next series.

MODS:
I think it's better if we have a place for criticism instead of having complaints in every other thread. Also maybe if we air out our criticism maybe we'll decide we might actually like it.

Thanks for atleast admitting that his track record actually matters.

Now you think he's qualified because of this, as did the people that hired him, and this is exactly why I think he's unquallified.

I don't see anyone that is aware of his work in denial that his past is the reason he was chosen for the job. And on the surface it's the kind of track record an organization like CBS would deem highly appropriate.

My point is if you look at teh plot devices and the writing style that is used by him it's quite clear what kind of work will be translated into trek.

If anyone ever wonders why Star Trek fans get a bad name on the internet, point them to a thread complaining about the direction of a show that no one knows a damn thing about other than speculation based on the name of one individual involved with it.

Please tell me which step in the development of a series will be bigger than hiring kurtzman?

People get hired by their track record, it's something that is quite established in the industry. More important kurtzman role seems to suggest where we are headed.

Sure, it SUGGESTS where we might be headed. Maybe. But right now you can't say you know the approach they are taking. You just can't You can speculate based on the limited amount of information you have. That's all any of can do. It might be legitimate to come on here and say I'm worried about what the approach is going to be based on Kurtzman's track record. It's asinine to come on here and say this is the wrong approach to take, when we don't know what the approach is and we don't know the extent to which Kurtzman will have influence as opposed to CBS and whoever they bring on as a showrunner and writers. Let's wait and see before condemning something that we can only guess about.

CBS is not taking the wrong approach, according to them. Kurtzman has a proven track record of successful TV shows and films, which means that CBS has the confidence that he will make the show on budget and on time.

CBS is in the business of making money. That's their approach.

As for the actual show, I'll wait and see what Kurtzman actually produces, rather than assuming CBS told him to make a show just like he has made before.

As for complaints about the films, I think there are legitimate complaints. The question is do those complaints ruin the film for me as a viewer? For me, the answer is a resounding "No."

Deus ex machina has been a part of storytelling for many years. I don't think 2017 storytelling is going to jettison that.

I think it's kind of difficult to criticize a show before *any* details have been released.

I hated the part where the thing happened with the people and the events.

(I will quote this post in 14 months)

Well, it's Kurtzman's show. CBS isn't going to replace or second guess him because of some fannish bitching on the Internet.

Here's a thought: why not watch the first episode of the show - which will be on "free" broadcast TV - before "perceiving flaws" in it?

:guffaw:

Dennis, you know better than that.

Star Trek, internet...you know how it works.

Because everything that needed to be fixed won't be fixed.

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! :scream:

There hasn't even been a script written or actor hired. How can there be things to fix?

Translation : 'It won't be precisely, exactingly, excruciatingly exactly how I want it to be, down to the smallest detail.'

To be fair, the OP's original complaint is Kurtzman's heavy reliance upon deus ex machina in his prior works. Hence the fear that the new Trek series will be plagued by what is seen as Kurtzman's M.O. rather than potentially different due to CBS direction.

But, the broader implications seem premature to me.

Jesus Christ, dude. Here's there reasoning:

1. People want Star Trek
2. This guy made us a lot of money producing Star Trek.
3. Let's make this guy give people Star Trek.

Star Trek: The Tears of Autistoid goes on to premiere to record numbers and make the very rich people at CBS even richer.

Yeah, from the POV of people making decisions at CBS what stands out about Kurtzman is that he delivers successful product - specifically, here, successful TV product - out of unusual and sf/fantasy material. They've worked with him time and again and have every reason to trust him - why go to anyone else?

I'm sure I will watch this, whatever it ends up being. It will be called Star Trek, and I have watched anything that is called Star Trek for the past 42 years.

That having been said, I have to say I'm more excited about the new motion picture coming out. I hope whatever CBS does, it doesn't muck up what's going on at Paramount. I also hope we get more JJ/Pine/Quinto/Saldana/Pegg Trek!

My last statement alone will make someone's head explode...

Yep. Complaining about Trek that hasn't been made yet has been a time-honored tradition since the gap between TOS Seasons 1 and 2.

I said they shouldn't have put a pinko ruski on the bridge and noone listened to me!

Movies are not tv shows - they are spectacles. Tv shows are more intimate. No more disfigured ugly aliens taking their checks to the bank is my mandate and deal breaker.
The Klingons should be another branch of Humanity and the Vulcans should be the Romulans Brothers which should put them out the outs with the Federation because they can't be trusted. Spock could lie to a computer and get away with it. Lying may be illegal on their world because they're all telepathic which is BTW why the Romulans hate them.

The nu Trek movie designs were way off and hopefully will be changed. The writing was mediocre to bad. The only thing good was the direction which had an objective POV, something I've been saying for quite some time now. Space should be treated with respect especially it's distances and the music should be daring and dramatic - overly so.

They need to save money, not spend it on unnecessary bumpy headed aliens or xplosions.
SFX should be indulged of course if the show calls for it.
