Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

CBS must not believe the series can survive on the broadcast network.
It probably has more to do with getting people to subscribe to CBS All Access.

The only reason why we had TNG and DS9 was because Paramount Television wanted a show for first-run syndication; VOY and ENT were made to get people to watch UPN. A new Trek show to draw people to CBS All Access is kind of following suit of a Trek series being made for a new or expanded market.

And I guessing that Paramount won't be launching Michael Gummelt's Star Trek Uncharted...
Unless CBS is taking some elements from it, with Kurtzman as the producer. The mystery angle is right up his alley.

I do like the overall premise.

In addition, the timing of the summer pitch meeting Michael Gummelt had with Paramount could be an indication. Gummelt said in his 8/26 blog update - "The producer I pitched to (a very high-placed producer at Paramount, they definitely gave me the right audience) listened carefully and took notes and has the pilot script."
Most likely Kurtzman
The show's being produced by CBS, not Paramount.

I LOVE Star Trek...but I don't want to pay for it...
Seems to be a common thought around here.
Really?

Don't be surprised if eventually all networks/shows are a la carte in the not too distant future. That seems to be where it's headed. Get used to it. In the long run it could be better this way. Why pay $100+ a month for 1000+ channels, most of which you'll never watch? I'd rather pay for what I expressly WANT to watch.

You'll go see one of movies multiple, multiple times. Paying $20+ USD each time. But $6-$7 a month is OUTRAGEOUS!

;-)

What we know...

Who: Bob Kurtzman, Co-Producer of ST09, STID

What: New Trek series not involving the reboot cast. Since the guy who help create the nuNiverse (see what I did there?) also created this, expect this to take place in the rebooted reality that hates "real" Trekkies.

Where: Pilot episode on CBS television network (USA) with subsequent episodes airing on their proprietary streaming service "CBS All Access". Show will be licensed out to international networks to air as they wish.

When: Debuting January 2017. Don't yet know if subsequent episodes will "dump" (like House of Cards on Netflix, or be released on a traditional weekly schedule. Also don't yet know if subsequent episodes will eventually air on traditional television after the initial release.

How: Magic beans.

As for CBS not believing in the show enough to air on their televison network, they're probably right. CBS has high standards for ratings and their current lineup is providing it.

Those shows also aren't terribly expensive, compared to the expensive of producing a weekly sci-fi show. Their costliest shows are probably NCIS and Big Bang Theory and they've earned it being #1 in their demos for the better part of a decade or more.

"Having a brand new, untested show cost as much as those? Nope. But we'll throw it on this streaming thing, treat it as its flagship and go from there."

The bar for success is much lower on something so new. We're much more likely to see multiple season on All Access. If it was on CBS it would have one chance - and probably not make it - then get cancelled and replaced with NCIS Minot.

True. But I think there still has to be some sort of (creative, timing and business) agreements between the studios regarding Trek. Plus the series may be aired on CBS, but produced at/by Paramount Studios.

Ugh...God!

You Trek fans sound like a bunch of old nagging women.

Support the show and quit complaining, because if you don't support it you will be the ones to blame for it being killed.

CBS owns Star Trek, not Paramount. Paramount will not be involved with this series at all.

Agreed. That was what killed the Stargate franchise.

If this show fails, the blame is solely that of the producers, not the fans.

If I was somehow magically given a choice of where/when the new series should be set, I'd like to see a return to the Prime universe and set 20 years or so after the Dominion war as someone else suggested. I'd want a new ship and crew too. This scenario would allow for the possibility of guest appearances by former Trek actors. I know it's a longshot but that would be my wish list.

Having said that I am just excited that we are getting a new show and can't wait to see what they give us. I don't really care what universe it's set in or what time period, as long as they give us a great story.

Nice post. When was the last time a sci fi show was aired on network tv? Everyone's acting like it's so unusual, but I think it's a rare thing. Fringe? Person of Interest if you count that. Star Trek hasn't aired on a big network since the 60s.

I would say except for Game of Thrones the biggest talked about shows today are Orange is the new Black and House of Cards, both of which are on Netflix. Hulu hasn't had the same success with original content but that's how the world is moving. And CBS is throwing it's entire weight behind All Access. It's a vote of confidence in Star Trek IMHO

Fans being super annoying on a website where no one can hear them scream will have no effect on the fate of the show.

Often, the former is more entertaining than the latter, so it's win-win. :techman:

My hope is that they ignore all us old fans entirely. That's what's best for the show. That's what they did when they made TNG. If the show is well done it will draw new people and they can be it's fans. That's how things are supposed to work. Some of us will like it, some won't. But Enterprise showed that the hard core fan base is not enough to keep a show on tv

For me? I'd rather have a full reboot. That way the creators aren't beholden to creative choices made from 5-50 years ago.

I'll admit having a clean slate is a good way to do it. I just miss the old continuity.
