agreed, some of these theories sound like the most boring Trek movie since Insurrection. No one cares about the goddamned Prime Directive.
Insurrection's problem was it was terrible, not the prime directive. I think the most likely plot at the moment is Elba and his crew are using Federation principles to guide the local civilisation to avoid the mistakes made on Earth. This fits with the talk from Elba and Pegg about a villain who thinks he is doing good.
"Imagine," says Elba, "imagine a planet where there is no word for 'slave', because the very idea has never been conceived."
"Every person on this planet is a slave," spits Kirk, "YOUR slave."
Sofia Boutella might not be playing a native. Perhaps another outside group has set up their own protectorate nearby, and they are about to go to war with Elba for the "freedom" of the planet. (This would be analogous to the proxy wars between USA and Russia in the Middle East and elsewhere.) Boutella and Kirk team up to prevent war and get all alien meddlers off the planet.
Why fix a crashed ship and fly it to the city? Elba has told the natives and his own people that the status quo is unavoidable, because they can't leave the planet. Kirk flying the ship and "landing" it near the city proves that was a lie. It would be a big action sequence in the middle of the picture.
