Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

No one cares about the goddamned Prime Directive.
agreed, some of these theories sound like the most boring Trek movie since Insurrection.

Insurrection's problem was it was terrible, not the prime directive. I think the most likely plot at the moment is Elba and his crew are using Federation principles to guide the local civilisation to avoid the mistakes made on Earth. This fits with the talk from Elba and Pegg about a villain who thinks he is doing good.

"Imagine," says Elba, "imagine a planet where there is no word for 'slave', because the very idea has never been conceived."
"Every person on this planet is a slave," spits Kirk, "YOUR slave."

Sofia Boutella might not be playing a native. Perhaps another outside group has set up their own protectorate nearby, and they are about to go to war with Elba for the "freedom" of the planet. (This would be analogous to the proxy wars between USA and Russia in the Middle East and elsewhere.) Boutella and Kirk team up to prevent war and get all alien meddlers off the planet.

Why fix a crashed ship and fly it to the city? Elba has told the natives and his own people that the status quo is unavoidable, because they can't leave the planet. Kirk flying the ship and "landing" it near the city proves that was a lie. It would be a big action sequence in the middle of the picture.

Maybe as a Christmas treat?

Part of me would stupidly enjoy a short film about the NuTrek crew discovering the meaning of Xmas. Spock and Bones arguing over the existence of Santa Claus, Scotty and Chekov getting really drunk, NUhura chasing Spock around with mistletoe, Sulu doing his job and rolling his eyes at all the shenanigans on the bridge, while Kirk tries to get the ship to galactic north (pole) by midnight.

KIRK : You know, Mr Spock, I think we've learned something tonight. Christmas is -
SCOTT: Ya bastard!!! [punches KIRK in face]

In my opinion, first, one or two teasers to the end of the year to keep the attention and curiosity (I believe Star Wars will completely dominate the big screen during its opening month). Second, a trailer in 2016. I believe that the first trailer is essential to attract the public's attention on the film. So it has to be well done.

Amazing that an "insider"-proclaimed "fan production" managed to:

1) complete production in a timely fashion; and
2) enlist a cast of hundreds and film on two different continents

despite so many "issues" with production and "never having a script or even a budget!"

:p

Yeah, but it's all about this "Yorktown" or whatever. Clearly not a real Star Trek film :techman:

Someone made a interesting comment about Enterprise.

"since there was no shooting in USA, What will engineering look like?"

You know, this stopped being funny about 6 months ago. You could have at least joked about lens flares instead.

Not sure about engineering, but I hear a lot of the action will focus on the never-before-seen hockey rink located behind the shuttle bay.

Canada has beer factories, too. Maybe Scott has more scenes out of engineering.

Yeah, because that stopped being funny... when? About November 2009? :p

The whole lens flare thing was always an odd complaint to me. It's weird that Abrams did it that way, and I get that people don't like it, but what bearing does that have on enjoying the movie?

Regardless, as with most things, I am curious to see reactions to this film when it is finally out in theaters, from all comers.

As for the PD discussion, I at least appreciated the fact that ID attempted to explore the consequences of Kirk violating it, rather than just allowing him to just make the choice. Never mind the excessive use of the PD in TNG and VOY (or apparent lack of it in obvious situations) or ENT having Archer complain about lacking any "directives" while he is out exploring. Just felt a little too on the nose, for me.

Agreed. It is an interesting time to be a Trek fan.

On a somewhat side tangent, the movie's done filming. And I realize (based on WarpFactorZ and others assertions, that the majority of my involvement in fan groups the last few months has been attacking the "anti-JJ" crowd. I need to stop that. I disabled my Disqus account and have left all of my Star Trek Facebook groups (again... don't know how I got re-added to those). I've been a member here for years and I'm not about to leave this place. But, I'm here to be a "fan" again and not let all of that political and ridiculous crap in. Hopefully I won't get sucked back in again. I'm eager to see what Beyond brings to the table. Hopefully it'll be amazing! Maybe it won't be. And if it isn't, that's okay!

I apologize if I've offended anyone with my (as one Disqus user called it) "smug" attitude. It's really meant as a joke.

Oh, the Archer "... directive" line absolutely made me roll my eyes. Worst thing ever.

No! It is NOT OK for STB to not be amazing! :scream: ;)

These are interesting times in fandom. Never to be repeated. A real passing of the torch has occurred. When I joined this group before ST09 came out, there were folks saying only William Shatner could be Jim Kirk. They could never recast the crew. Well it turns out things seemed to work out OK, anyway.

Interesting times always seem to create a commotion. Letting go, moving on. What to let go, what to keep.
