The European Football Season 15/16

I hope that the win over M. Tel-Aviv has given the Blues some confidence...it would be nice to get a second Premier League win.

Maybe they'll manage to win with Mourinho suspended?

I read he might get a 5-match suspension for insulting his own team doctor during a game. That whole Eva Carneiro incident is so bizarre.

It is odd: he claims he said one thing, she says another. The fact she hasn't showed up at all since early August seems to me that something deeper is going on - and considering that Mourunho seems to be a rather difficult person to work with, I would imagine that him being given a little vacation might be helpful. He just signed a contract extension last year, so the club is stuck with him.
Any who, winning makes things better, and its nice to see that Arsenal had peaked already ;

Chelsea 2 - 0 Arsenal

Arsenal somehow managed to have two players sent off (Gabriel & Cazorla). Costa is very good at winding players up and he definitely takes credit for the first one.

EPL results - week 6

Chelsea 2 - 0 Arsenal
Aston Villa 0 - 1 West Brom
Man City 1 - 2 West Ham
Stoke 2 - 2 Leicester
Newcastle 1 - 2 Watford
Bournemouth 2 - 0 Sunderland
Swansea 0 - 0 Everton

Tottenham 1 - 0 Crystal Palace
Liverpool 1 - 1 Norwich
Southampton 2 - 3 Man United

Martial scores two more (3 goals in two games). Maybe Van Ghaal knew something we didn't? Liverpool continue to falter (Rodgers will not be there next season) and the two north east clubs are still shockingly bad. City finally lost (good) to a West Ham that looks very good under Bilic. Leicester are the only unbeaten team left (everyone loves Ranieri).

Everyone laughed at Leicester (me included) but give the Tinkerman his due. I'm pretty sure the wheels will come off the wagon sooner rather than later, but they're amassing points that'll come in very handy come the end of the season. They won't be in anything like the relegation trouble they were last year. That's two games in a row now they've come back from being two goals down.

Advocaat can't survive long at Sunderland, although I'm not sure anyone else could do much better. I think McClaren will turn things around at Newcastle though (if given time)

Losing to WBA has pissed off Villa fans, Sherwood better hope they win against Birmingham tonight!

I think Rogers is going to get lucky like he did last year and Liverpool are about to go on a run (you heard it here first).

Meanwhile in the lower leagues we drew 0-0 with Burnley last night. Had almost 60% of the possession and looked very solid in defence but still not convinced about Paul Clement-we play at such a slow tempo and need to balance being tough to beat with being able to score, draws alone won't get us promoted, and you have to wonder at any manager who with 10 minutes to go doesn't put Darren Bent who can get a goal out of nothing on. I thought adding Kevin Phillips to our backroom staff would have added a bit of attacking impetus to our tactics but obviously not...

Sack predictions (in chronological order).

1. Advocaat (not that he'd care that much which is part of the problem).
2. Sherwood (great motivator, wears his heart on his sleeve but tactically unaware).
3. McClaren (given time he might be alright but the toon don't give managers time).
4. Rodgers (top four or bust)

5. Peligrini (end of the season... possibly sooner).
6. Wenger (end of the season).

****

Fergie's got a new book out. Which would explain why he's saying controversial things again. Apparently he only had four world class players in his entire career at United.

Cantona - Giggs - Scholes - Ronaldo

Ferguson also revealed why Pogba left United at the time. And the reason is a surprise to... nobody. Ferguson blames Pogba's agent Mino Raiola:

Ferguson felt United's chances of convincing the midfielder to stay were dashed after his first meeting with Raiola.

“There are one or two football agents I simply do not like,” Ferguson writes in his new book, Leading . “And Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba’s agent, is one of them.
"I distrusted him from the moment I met him. He became Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s agent while he was playing for Ajax, and eventually he would end up representing Pogba, who was only 18-years-old at the time.

“We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco.

"He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.”

Raiola is such a pain in the ass. I wish he'd just leave the business. He spends all season talking to the media about how his players might leave their clubs at the end of the season.
I suppose he makes a lot of money from transfers and the players make good money from the contracts he negotiates but it surprises me that they're not fucking tired of his antics.
If only he'd just shut up for a few weeks once in a while.

It's a bit of a shame that Juve have started dealing with the guy again but what can you do...
In any case he's a scumbag.

Still, though... pretty convenient excuse for Sir Alex. He could've just, you know, let Pogba play some matches to make him consider staying. :p

Fergie made plenty of mistakes but never admitted to any. He was also notorious for holding grudges so I take most of what he says with a pinch of salt.

I thought I was the only one who found Costa's on-field trolling amusing. Thankfully not

As much as I love Premier League football the fact that this:

Costa appeared to start the incident by twice raking his hands across Koscielny's face and then chest-bumping him to the ground.

is "violent conduct" just blows my American mind. I have seen worse behavior at a Tee-ball game.

Well, it's a bigger deal in something that's supposed to be a no-contact sport. American MLS would probably take the same view.

My God. Wolfsburg had only allowed 3 goals all season - and only 2 in league play.

His second and third goals are the most impressive, although I am astonished he was left unmarked on the setup to the third goal. That was lazy, lazy play on the part of the Wolfsburg defense.
