Star Trek: Renegades

Hella boobies

Finally I think it's a pretty brazen move to slap on a crawl at the beginning asking people to go to their site to donate if they want a DVD or Blu-Ray. I get that these guys have been shameless with their self-promotion, but that just seems to me to be really poking the bear unnecessarily.

Judging by the response, if they'd put it at the end, no one would donate to get one.

Hey if this shows up as a dvd for sale at a con I will buy it.

Why the heck shouldn't they say "if you want to buy our dvd, do this"? Jesus I remember my old Trek videos, one long commercial to buy more Trek videos taking up the first 5 minutes on each one. And of course the video gods were whispering in my ear "if you fast fwd you will damage the preciousss..."

Sorry - I meant except the surely helpful (even if it is faaaaaar to long and convoluted) Fanfilm Primer and Maurices involvment in Exeter ages ago.

teacup - if any fanfilm shows up for sale at a convention, it would be a violation of the "no profit" clause. It has to work as a donation (yes, I know, the line is blurry)

northmoon is cool. Everything is lovely.

And oh yeah, obvious point I somehow bleeped over. Welp maybe I should mosey on over to the "give us money" page and send them something since I had quite the pleasant evening watching them, uhh.. it.

I just love how everyone talks about it, likes its a completed project that can be compared to other projects. Did someone invent time travel? if so I would like to check out the future. :)

Here's the deal: You released it. It's completed. If you weren't done with it, you shouldn't have released it. That was up to you guys.

You can keep editing and adding more effects or tweak shots for the next 40 years but the film is fundamentally flawed.

We understand it's a pilot and things can be changed. We're passing on it.

Unless you're Stargate SG1. Then you can edit your clunky pilot and release it on DVD for feature-price over a decade later.

I think Tom was referring to Axanar, not Renegades, with regards to the time travel bits. Comparing Renegades to another project that has only completed filming one singular scene is a bit premature.

The "it" in this case was Axanar - which is the new Great White Hope for some fans determined to see the end of the unholy reign of Abrams.

Tom
is rightly saying that it is stupid to compare a finished project - Renegades - to an unfinished project.

City on the Edge of Fore- Shit! Now all of a sudden I've noticed how much Edith's on-the-nose speech about starships bothers me!

Well, this thread is heavy on the criticism, some of which I agree with, so instead I'm going to list the things I did like:

-Section 31 - it's good to see more of the goings on of these guys since we only see a few glimpses in DS9.
-the conspiracy arc. I LOVE a good conspiracy arc and I love the idea that the Federation isn't as utopian as it claims to be, that it has a lot of problems still that need to be worked out. This makes the Federation seem more realistic to me instead of it being this God-like entity.
-I liked the scene with Chekov's granddaughter. People may find it cheesy, but for me it was a scene that depicted exactly what being a member of Starfleet means. You never know how you're going to act in a certain situation until that moment comes. She couldn't imagine doing any harm to herself to save someone else, but when it came to her "poppy," she didn't have to think too hard about doing the right thing. Yeah, it made me tear up.
-I didn't catch the name of the main antagonist race, but I loved the makeup for them. I thought it was really well done for their budget - a very polished look compared to some of the aliens we've seen in canonical Trek.
-the premise of those portals folding space. AWESOME. I hope that if Renegades is able to continue the series, they do something with the Iconians. Funny because I watched that TNG episode right before I watched Renegades and I was certain those large stones had something to do with them. We know the Iconian planet has been destroyed, but it was speculated that some of them escaped through portals. Borrada's people found those stones before the Federation existed so who could it have been? hmm hmm, this really had me excited/pondering where they would go with this.
-the main cast having so many different species of aliens! Love it. You have a shapeshifter, a hologram, a Betazoid, a Cardassian, a Bajoran, a human, and a genetically engineered human. It's possible I'm forgetting some people, but that aspect impressed me. I've long wanted a Star Trek cast full of maybe a couple humans but mostly aliens because that's something I find fascinating in Trek.
-the lack of overuse of CGI. I know a lot of people love CGI, but I personally feel it's overused these days to the point that productions become garish and completely unrealistic.
-Loved the dark tone. DS9 is my favorite Trek so that makes sense. I can see why people would say it's not Star Trek, but for me, it works just fine. These renegades, while appearing to be dark or selfish or whatever, are still doing the right thing. They might not have heroic reasons behind it like doing it in the name of Federation principles, but they're still doing what needs to be done.
-I had no problems with the acting really. I mean shit, there have been numerous times while watching canonical Star Trek that I turned to my husband and commented on the terrible acting from some of these professional actors. For me, this adds to the "campy" feel of Star Trek.
-I would rather watch this than Into Darkness. No joke!

Now to list a few things off the top of my head that irked me a bit but which I didn't see anyone else mention yet:
-T'Leah's makeup. It was all over the place. I feel I personally could've done a better job. The design on her forehead also seemed more Romulan than Vulcan. Maybe she's half Romulan and half Vulcan? I dunno. Chekov, IIRC, referred to her as a Vulcan, but she also acts more like a Romulan than a Vulcan in some scenes.
-Cut out the cliches. There were a few lines of dialogue that could've easily been replaced with original phrasing. Using cliches made the scenes seem more contrived.
-Captain Alvarez' behavior is soooo annoying. He behaves like he's 15 years old and just got his first command. *shudders*

I'm sure I'll think of more later, but these are the first thoughts I had while watching the pilot. I also have to say I don't care whether it is considered a fan production or an independent series or whatever. That makes no difference to me. I was excited about Renegades but not counting down to the moment it was released. This could explain the vastly differing opinions. I'd seen the trailers and thought it looked interesting but had largely forgotten about it until a friend informed me it was available. I didn't have super high expectations or anything but was intrigued about the premise in the same way a Vulcan might find something interesting. Even after watching the pilot, I am still intrigued to know what will happen next.
