THE LAST SHIP Season 2 - discussion, spoilers and general mayhem

I liked the challenge coin bit between Chandler and Ray. I was a teeny bit upset that the kid completely missed the point of the honor the exchange represented. Chandler was treating him as a respected equal and the kid wise-assed his way out of the moment.

Sigh. Kids today. Can't even have a civil post-apocalypse.

I know at 17 I wouldn't have understood what that meant. Hell, at 27 I wouldn't have had a clue either.

I liked the episode, but Chandler deciding to go looking for Cory or Cody, or whoever he was, really was stupid. From the camera angles, he looked like he was about 20 feet from the bad guys as he was yelling 'Cody!' Granted, they probably couldn't hear him over the gunfire, but still, pretty dumb to put himself into that position.

Oh, sure, but that's kind of part of why it's upsetting. He just doesn't even know.

Agreed.

What say you Last Ship Threaders: (vote with your posts)

-"FREE RACHEL SCOTT!"

-"HANG RACHEL SCOTT!"

I vote "Free." Toothpick Boy needed to go and his death led to a major breakthrough. Win-win.

The president already brought up his ability to pardon people early in the episode. Guessing who will benefit from that.

And god dammit, I want the writers of this show to do a new Star Trek.

FREE RACHEL SCOTT!

Really great episode this week. The scenes between Chandler and Scott are particularly stand-out. What I liked about how they handled the dilemma is that you can understand both sides of the argument. Dr. Scott did what she felt needed to be done both for her research and what she felt Sorensen deserved, while Chandler is adhering to the fact that he has to maintain discipline on his ship and follow the law. In the end, Dr. Scott is punished due to the law leaving it up to us viewers to decide if she were right or not.

I got to say, when I read in the plot description this episode would be about a murder investigation, I kind of dreaded it feeling, what is there to investigate, it's pretty clear who killed Sorensen. But that actually turned out to be a really interesting aspect of this week's episode. Not often I get my expectations flipped around like that.

And we get back to actually acting like this is a Navy show as opposed to having the crew on ground as Army posers. In addition to a really cool naval combat sequence, it was also nice to see the crew working together to figure out the deal with the POW's cell phones. And we get glimpses at every day life on board ship with that scene in the mess hall where everyone was giving Miller and O'Connor chocolate bars or Navy tokens.

So, maybe I missed it, or maybe we're just meant to assume this happened, but did Chandler call back tactical team sent out in the boat? Yeah, I know, they said they were going to render aid to any survivors, but now that the video is out there making it look like the Nathan James attacked those ships, a bunch of guys in Navy uniforms are going to turn pariahs real quickly.

No, he let them go render assistance and warned them they'd be on their own. He never called them back.

And careful, sojourner. You're wishing for trek executive produced by Michael Bay...

My understanding is Michael Bay doesn't really contribute much input for the show. He provides funding and allows the his name to be associated with it for promotional purposes, but otherwise stays out everyone's way and allows the production staff to do their thing.

You can tell because the action scenes are actually easy to follow. ;)

Personally I'm good either way, but there are trekkies who'd have strokes at the mere thought of Baytrek.

Mope, I clearly said "writers".

And wtf? bluetooth??? It'd be easier to setup solar powered wi-fi repeaters. Better range, faster. easy to get parts for.

Truth be told, there are Trekkies who'd have a stroke at the mere thought of Star Trek being produced by anyone other than Roddenberry's ghost.

Rachel's case might be stronger had she not tossed out there that she didn't NEED to kill him to get what she needed, but did it because it's what he DESERVED. I don't have an argument with her logic, he did kill a few billion people, but if she'd stayed with the idea of needing to do it to create the new vaccine/contagion, it's a better PR piece.

She's (I assume) obviously not leaving, so we'll see what happens to force them to keep her. Likely her plan doesn't go perfectly. Using yourself as a the test subject rarely works out well, although exactly what McCoy would have done...

More's the irony, it's pretty much how Toothpick Boy became a carrier in the first place.

Understood.

In a functioning world, maybe. It's probably a little harder in the wake of Civilization's collapse.

'Course, the Ramseys managed to score an entire nuclear attack sub, so maybe the Bluetooth and burner phones are just them being picky.

A thought just occurred. Ramsey's people have access to the same cameras as the production team filming the show.

That's pretty scary.

That just put a funny image in my head of Sean and Ned sitting together on the sub watching one of the briefing scenes between the senior officers and Michener and making their plans accordingly.

It's a joke, people, please don't try to inform me the budgetary necessities for why the video turned out the way it did.

Yeah, as Scout101 pointed out, you're both wrong, as she clearly said (albeit in passing) that she didn't need to kill him to achieve her breakthrough. And the writing on this ep was terrific; it might be the series' best ep yet. I was hoping for a full Captain's Mast hearing and sentencing proceeding; it would have taken more time and been less intimate, but for an ep that stresses doing things by the book...

And that's a devastating point Chandler made about Toothpick's anti-propaganda value; Scott definitely messed up, bad.

Hurrah for Season 3! :bolian:
