Anyone Here Excited For the Fantastic Four Movie?

It's TPM syndrome - you've already told yourself how great it's going to be, which makes the inevitable disappointment sting that much more!

The few that have gone so far are probably feeling that now. The movie is not doing well.

Re: Director(Josh Trank)Not Responsible For Fantastic Four 2015 Movie?

Trank should have followed the source material and listened to what fans wanted.

That is NEVER good advice for any artistic endeavour...
I hear this quite a lot here. I'm not sure why, since criticism of Trek, and just about anything, is rampant, but it has become repeated often enough here to be trite advice - and I don't believe it to be true at all, or at least not so absolutely as "NEVER." There's plenty of crap left behind by moviemakers who failed for being tone deaf or stupidly/transparently contrary or antagonistic/contemptuous to their audience.

I stand by my "NEVER" statement. Any creative endeavour should be one's own. If the creator in question wants to "listen to the fans", that's fine. But it should NEVER be deemed a requirement. The audience, fans included, is entitled to NOTHING in terms of satisfaction. They are entitled to experiencing the art (in whatever form it takes) and they are entitled to have an opinion, whatever it might be. "Listen to the fans" is nothing more than shorthand for "I have been a faithful fan of this (franchise, musician, artist, writer, TV show, etc.) and I demand that the people making the next instalment (film, TV series, album, painting, etc.) satisfy my expectations. If they don't, then it will prove they don't care about the fans. wah, wah, wah,!!!!"

"Fans" are not owed "satisfaction", nor are they owed "consideration for what they want". Perhaps "not listening to the fans" will result in a complete failure. Even so, that does not vindicate the "should have listened to the fans" gang.

NEVER listening to fans and never being REQUIRED to listen to fans are two very different things. The latter gives the artist the freedom of choice.

See these articles that represent, basically, the assumption that the film has substantially failed audience expectations. So good job with not listening; someone didn't understand what the fans wanted or didn't listen or, from the director's point of view, didn't learn from history that studio interference can scuttle a film:

http://screenrant.com/fantastic-four-movie-rights-fox-marvel-studios-2015/

The tone of those article so immediately upon release is one of the swiftest assumptions of failure I've seen come out of the theaters in some time, especially for a Marvel property. It's akin to canceling a TV show before the first episode airs.

Sure, pure artistry exists for its own sake and can ignore the audience. In a commercial environment, not so much.

I just want to say I was sincere when I told Dennis to have a good time, since I got quoted about 4 times a few pages ago.

Now that I know he didn't, I'm just going to say, I'm sorry you didn't have a good time.

Fox should have checked Trank into rehab first before giving him the director's chair.

I almost feel bad for him. The movie is tanking bad and its really going to mess up his career for a while. He can blame the studio but ultimately he made changes to the story that fans disliked. Trank also distancing himself from the movie and blaming the studio will ruin his chances of getting other properties to direct. No one will want to hire him for fear that he will blame any failure on the studio. He should have owned the failure. The movie cost 120,000,000 and its not even going to make 30,000,000 this week. The movie will probably get to 45,000,0000 next week. Oversees box office will help but studios still don't get as much profit percentage from the overseas receipts as they do nationally. Yeah this film is a total failure.

However, there will still be curious types going to check it out for the next week or so, overseas take, streaming charges, DVD and Bluray sales, eventually TV showings. It will probably make back most of its $120 million in time. Any shortfall will be applied against tax, and as stated elsewhere, a good chunk of the $120 mill would have been spent internally at Fox, so isn't capital that is lost to them.

Fox won't have a big payday, but they'll do OK.

^Anyone who'd buy this turd on DVD is some kind of masochist. I haven't seen one positive review of it in these parts.

If you're talking domestic, even that seems overly optimistic at this point.

I'll probably grab it on DVD once it's under ten bucks. I know curiosity killed the cat and all, but I bought Ghost Rider 1 and 2 on DVD...hell has no surprises for me. ;)

I've got all the Marvel Blurays, or DVD's if they're not on Bluray, going back pre-MCU. I'll no doubt get this one too. It would make it more interesting if there is another cut of the film on it - maybe not a Direcors Cut though !

I will, however, be waiting for it to be remaindered or sold as used before I part with any more money. I've already spent £12 for Jr. and I to see it at the cinema...

You may be right. It depends what it makes in the next week. Bad word o f mouth is starting to spread. This movie really is a disaster. A pity. Even the Roger Corman version on YouTube doesn't have such a bad reputation.

Excited would be putting it strongly but I think it looks good from the trailers. I enjoyed Chronicle and I've liked all of the cast in anything I've ever seen them in. I'll go and see it unless reviews and word of mouth are horrible.

Who am I kidding? I'll go and see it even if reviews and word of mouth are horrible.

I'm afraid I've exercised the right to change my mind. The reviews and WOM are more horrible than I could've imagined. I was sure there'd be at least some people singing its praises. And I didn't anticipate the apparent studio interference that Trank has alluded to and that reviewers are saying is perfectly obvious when you watch it. Afraid I have to give it a miss.

I do feel sorry for the director, cast and writers, who I'm sure did their best to make a decent movie.

David Fincher did okay after Alien3, and opinions of the movie itself have improved with age... somehow.

Alien 3 while not great had some good things going for it. What pissed off so many people is that Michael Biehns character and the little Newt girl were killed off. It would have been cool to have them in the 3rd one so Ripley wouldn't have been the only one to survive. Also having Ripley die at the end really sucked.

I'm not sure what the new Fantastic Four has going for it. I will have to wait for it to come out on Netflix or television to find out. I don't want to spend any money on what seems to be a steaming pile.

Sounds like it's about time for someone to start a "Cast the NEXT reboot of Fantastic Four" thread.

Somehow I doubt we'll see another F4 movie until the next time the movie rights are about to lapse. No loss though. This IP has never been well suited to a movie adaptation. A TV show perhaps (and with today's technology that might be somewhat more feasible) but even so, I always felt the basic premise was rather weak and uninteresting.

Full disclosure: I haven't seen this new movie, nor did I ever have any intention of doing so. It sounded terrible right from the get-go and the verdict from all quarters seems like it's actually worse than I thought it would be.
