Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

It's been on Windows phone for a while. As an idea it's a good one, at least in theory. You automatically log in to free wifi on the go, but the with friends of friends on facebook thing is stupid.

Reporting in from Windows 10 and Edge.

The outcome is that Microsoft are building a massive database of wifi passwords - many of which will be reused by users on other accounts. It will be just sitting there waiting to be breached...

Edge I used for about three minutes - it doesn't have extensions so without lastpass or an adblocker a waste of time at present.

Yeah, they're also mapping Wireless networks, in the same way Google are. Apparently you can opt-out but you have to change the SSID on the wifi, meaning you need an opt-out, so your SSID would end up looking something like "WiFi_Opt-out_No_map" just to get them to not map you, which of course they will anyway.

In theory it's a decent idea, in practice it's completely nuts.

Yeah, I'm sticking with Firefox, just figured I'd try it out.

I'm wondering how many people will actually be that aware that Microsoft is now sharing their wifi passwords.

Suspect it's going to be a boon for hackers and a way for computers shops to make a bit of money going around changing people's SSID's.

Then again maybe it will be chance for those same shops to make sure nobody is using WEP (and yes it still gets used - my tablet picks up one from this building depsite having told the user it's insecure).

Background download has kicked off again after several hours. Fingers crossed this is the last batch of files.
:shifty:

edit: C:\$Windows.~BT folder is now only showing 140MB. All previous files have gone, save for two Folders: DUDownload and Sources. That previous download cost me 6GB - I'm on a limited monthly plan here!

In this day and age that's not always a practical solution.

Not just because of tablets and smart phones but some laptops don't have ethernet ports.

I'm still waiting for my notification. Come on, Microsoft! *crosses fingers*

I'll check on this in a week or two. I guess I should turn in my nerd card since I find it hard to get excited about a new OS release.

I went ahead and just downloaded the official updater. Worked just fine. Upgrade from Windows 8.1, no ISO or disc needed.

Pretty smooth so far!

So far so good. I did an upgrade from 7 to 10, and about halfway through, our power went out (thanks Duke Energy!), and had to restart the whole process. My personalization and customizations were lost, so that's what I'm busy restoring now. Still, everything else seems to be working so far.

So my PC says my Windows 10 download is ready, but I'm not sure if I should install. I've read all the stuff I can find online but I can't find any clear reason to actually upgrade. Cortana sounds fun but I'm sure it's just another way of recording my personal info for marketers and everything else sounds like minor UI tweaks. DX12 isn't going to matter on a core i3 laptop. Should I bother?

Just switch it off when you set up.
If I have a desktop that I only connect via Ethernet, will that keep the info from being shared as well?

NO..... Wifi sense only shares wifi information....

On my modem I can turn wifi on and off so I never use it unless I am using the laptop..

I still haven't managed to kick start this upgrade it just won't start..

Even the MS media creation tool isn't working for me.

During set up it asks you to go with express settings. Tell it no and chose them for yourself, in there you can choose to share or not, auto connect to open hotspots out not, share contracts or not.

As for the media creation tool, I used it twice yesterday, once to upgrade a desktop PC, without actually creating media, worked fine, then to create a USB in case we need to restore at some point, took forever but I guess the servers were getting hammered at that point.

MS said they are doing this in waves to ease load so I'm wondering if I'm just in that unlucky group that hasn't been given the files yet or server access..

Kind of odd how they are rolling this out. Seems people are having more issues with the upgrade then the insider preview which went very smoothly..

For what it's worth, I'm all set. After resolving the power outage issue that interrupted my installation and made me have to download and install all over again (thanks Duke Energy!), everything went smoothly after that.

Windows 10 is lightning fast, my apps load up in seconds, my system boots up in seconds, Cortana is constantly helpful, my Start Menu has all of my favorite programs without being cluttered, and I've arranged everything how I want it. I couldn't be happier in terms of upgrading and using this OS.

A few pics, because why not?
