If Star Trek uses Paramount studio space, that cost is figured into its budget. I'm not saying every dime should be dumped into Axanar. But if their for profit productions were done anywhere else, they would have to pay for studio space.
The money was donated to make an Axanar film, not to build a studio for a for profit entity.
I really don't want to go any deeper into the finances of a project that I'm not privy to behind-the-scenes details on. That is for the Axanar folks to do or not do.
Just floating my thoughts based on discussions here.
Indiegogo pursued the Axanar folks and promised to promote them. Wise choice if you ask me.
We release the books and folks (donor or not) can look through those releases if they'd like to. We're not going to be sitting down and having an accounting day with the public though. Like I said, we make the expenses available because we choose to and not because we're under any obligation to do so. If it becomes a distraction then we may end the practice, too.
Once a donation is made then all we're required to do -- ethically and morally -- is to deliver what was promised in exchange for the donation. What happens beyond that is the production's business, but we're currently choosing to open those books for all to see. We won't be doing the same with books that aren't donation driven however -- for example, I won't be opening the books of the for-profit Ares Digital, because that would be nobody's business outside of the company.
Indiegogo actively pursued us and offered us lower fees and higher marketing exposure on their home page and other areas of their site that Kickstarter wouldn't match, so we moved to Indiegogo. If we save a few points in fees then that will equate to a rather large savings of money that will go to making the film happen. It was a very smart move to switch and Indiegogo was very shrewd to pursue us as actively as they did.
As the comment after this one has said, are we expected to shut down or dismantle the sets as scrap when we're done with the film? Of course not and that would be foolish. The lease for the studio isn't going to pay for itself when it's up for renewal, so we need to generate revenue to pay that expense, as well as other fundamental recurring expenses. We'll be renting out the sets to other Trek productions, renting out space in the studio for other productions that have nothing to do with Trek, and we'll be doing our own projects that have nothing to do with CBS IP so that we can earn profit and keep the lights on between our future Trek adventures. We can't keep coming back to the donation trough for such things, so the studio has to be self-sustaining.
This is Business 101-type stuff here.
