Or (since there's that extra hour-fifteen), Mitchell escapes Delta Vega after Kirk kills and abandons him there. We know the Talosians could project over light years, Mitchell if he continued to evolve could lure/compel another vessel to come to Delta Vega.
It's not like they cannot expand/tweak the original story if they were to go in that direction.

There's also the recent story about Pegg several times feeling like quitting on the script because of the pressure, and JJ talking him down.

So JJ is still very much overseeing Star Trek. However, I am sure he wants to take full advantage of the creativity of the new people on the team, and won't be just a director-by-proxy.
