I'm pretty sure they'll have a space battle.

What if they decide to remake "Where No Man Has Gone Before"?

There's an extra one hour and fifteen minutes over the original episode. They'll still have a space battle.

Yeah I guess Gary could use his power to become a giant human capable of flying into space and attacking the enterprise with laser beams from his eyes.

Or (since there's that extra hour-fifteen), Mitchell escapes Delta Vega after Kirk kills and abandons him there. We know the Talosians could project over light years, Mitchell if he continued to evolve could lure/compel another vessel to come to Delta Vega.

It's not like they cannot expand/tweak the original story if they were to go in that direction.

I was thinking along the same lines it they do want to expand a TOS storyline. There are actually plenty. The corbomite maneuver would be a nice one or maybe Balance of Terror. My other idea was a joke. I just felt like making a joke about a giant Gary Mitchell with phaser eyes.

You don't have to lose any sleep tonight, because they're not going to do that.

They're not! That's a relief ;)

Honestly, I think the drive from the writing staff and Lin is something more original. Given the backlash for using Khan in the last film original is probably the safest route.

Until the film comes out.

His hand has already been in it big time since according to Lin, Abrams called him and told him if he liked "Star Trek", then he should go for it and take the director's chair. With an endorsement like that, how could Lin say no?

There's also the recent story about Pegg several times feeling like quitting on the script because of the pressure, and JJ talking him down.

So JJ is still very much overseeing Star Trek. However, I am sure he wants to take full advantage of the creativity of the new people on the team, and won't be just a director-by-proxy.

If I had Justin Lin as the director of my project, I would have every confidence in him.

With Pegg, I think it is simply a matter of the relationship that he and Abrams have established with the last two films, and mutual interests. Not a reflection on Lin so much as a relationship that needed the right amount of understanding.
