... epiodes, that is. Which one makes you reach for the "skip" button faster? Personally, as much-maligned as the DS9 Ferengi episodes are, I usually find the Klingon episodes even more tiresome and skippable.
I really love the Ferengi episodes. And most of the Klingon episodes, except Once more upon the breach and The sword of Kahless. But these episodes are not that bad that I would skip them. I'm not a fan of the Romulans and I think of Romulan politics as tiresome. Some episodes with them can be skipped. Just my opinion. Every time I start into the novelverse and it is announced that a book is about the Romulans I'm very skeptical. Some of the novels are surprisingly good, though.
This thread reminds me that I should rewatch that one Klingon and Ferengi episode soon: The house of Quark. An old favorite of mine.
The only Klingon episodes I skip are Sword of Kahless and Blood Oath. I skip nearly all the Zek/Ishka episodes.
I adore all episodes that spin around aliens, Klingons or Ferengi, it does not matter. I like the alien perspective, aliens say what humans are not likely to admit, they approach the problems more creatively and in a less predictable way than humans do. I wish the Romulans had been better developed and had been given more screentime. What is more, the clash between human views and alien values makes for great dialogues and memorable quotes.
Yeah but the cartoonish antics of Moogie & Zek don't tend to have those great dialogues and memorable quotes.
Well, Moogie was a very untypical Ferengi female and Zek was cunning and observant, he was good at sniffing the profit and finding new business venues. Though old, he was not narrow-minded and did not reject the rationale behind Moogie’s advice. They were a controversial couple that introduced many changes to their culture. Viewers who are interested in human characters can’t relate to their way of thinking and their problems. In this sense, “Ferengi Love Songs” was an amusing episode for people who like Ferengi and a boring one for people who followed the main plot lines. Ishka had no illusions about her sons, she realized that Rom was good-natured but stupid while Quark was very clever but self-serving. Zek was clever enough to realize that his time as Nagus was over and stepped down voluntarily appointing a Nagus who was quite a shock for the Ferengi society. He sensed that the social conventions were changing and the new generations had to make their choices. Ferengi were created for humor and fun in the first place so a bit of cartoonish attitude was not bad at all. Not everything has to be deadly serious and human-centered.
I'm more annoyed that Klingon culture is cribbed so much from fantasy books. Since I didn't read fantasy (I loathe the genre) so I didn't notice until I watched Game of Thrones. That's why many disrespect sci fi, there's a lack of creativity there. That said, I don't skip very many DS9 episodes, especially the worst ones (not many) because I have seen them the least.
As soon as I hear the first "honour" in Klingon episodes I either skip ahead or focus on something else. Ferengi eps are generally more interesting and entertaining.
Klingons are so incredibly one-dimensional in the most boring way imaginable. Worf being the one notable exception, and even he's pretty dang boring most of the time. "Rawr, I'm a warrior and noble and shit, rawr! Oh, and I like prune juice, too." While Ferengi are pretty one-dimensional, too, at least they're interesting if not outright amusing. The sheer chaos they create by their presence makes their stories fun to watch, whereas whenever a Klingon shows up, you know it's either going to just be about revenge, honor, or someone being a douchenozzle. So to answer the question: Klingon stories. However, that implies that I also dislike Ferengi stories, which I don't. They're pretty much the only DS9 episodes I can handle rewatching from time to time, in fact.
I don't understand that. I for one consider that The Sword of Kahless is the second best Klingon episode of all time, right behind Once More Unto The Breach, which is a masterpiece, IMO that is. I can't stand the ishka Episodes. I never re-watched any of these, except the Magnificent Ferengi, which isn't so much about Ishka than it is about Quark and his "friends".
Yes, unfortunately, too much time was devoted to the Klingon warrior ethos and rituals and we did not have many opportunities to catch a glimpse of their social conventions and matrimonial relations. In this sense, I really enjoyed Sirella/Martok exchanges, his views on marriage, the war at home. The episode “You are Cordially Invited” where Sirella was making Jadzia exercise the wedding ceremony for hours was truly hilarious. Or when the Starfleet crew had to take part in the Klingon version of a stag party. I have always loved Kor and Martok, they were real machos and tough guys to the last, lived according to their own standards, had their victories and losses and did not care what other people would say. I fully agree that “Once More Unto the Breach” is a masterpiece. The clash between nobility pride and common merit was very well articulated by both actors. Both characters had so much class and presence. Martok’s comment on Kor’s humiliation sounds so sincere. "I've hated his name for almost 30 years. I've dreamt of the moment when I would finally see him stripped of his rank and title - when he would suddenly find himself without a friend in the world, without the power of his birthright...Well I've had that moment now - and I took no joy from it."
The only time I watch Klingon episodes is when they do battle against the Cardassians and the Dominion.
The Klingons are simply awesome, and the Ferengi were not created for comic relief. They were actually intended to be the new enemy in tng but they were so ridiculous that they became a joke, gave us the Cardassians though so yay for the Negus.
Even the Magnificent Ferengi? It's a hell of an episode..... Oh, I forgot: the Dominion got the shit end of the stick in it, right? Fine. Skip it.
Ok, i admit it, i laughed out loud on that one. I also enjoyed "Business as Usual" and some others. I only skip the ones with Quark's mother and the Nagus.
Been catching up on DS9 on my Kindle recently, some of them I haven't seen in years. At first I thought about skipping some of the Ferengi ones for some reason, but I'd forgotten how my Dad and I always loved it when Brunt, FCA showed up, lol. As far as Klingons vs. Ferengi, I didn't realize at the time how similar Quark and Worf's arcs are. In "Body Parts," when Brunt is chewing out Quark for being corrupted by humans, that could just as easily have been Worf getting lectured by Kurn or Gowron. But I guess that was a major theme of all the series. You want to feel like you belong, but your "family" resents you for having your own opinions on things. "Body Parts" is a great episode overall, it's pretty shocking how casually they discuss death and blackmail, lol.
