I just received my new DVD's of :)"Lost In Space", Season 3.:) I have already noticed some changes that I would like to find if anybody knows the reasons for some of changes?? One of the first things that I noticed was there uniforms. They still show rank type ranks on the shelves with colors, plus I noticed that Penny's was able to wear hair down more in the 3rd Season. Half the cast, was wearing a darker purple, where as Major Don West and Penny where usually wearing Green. I was hoping that somebody on the TREK BBS would know why some of these changes were made for Season 3? I'm sure that I will notice more as I watch this old favorite T.V. show from 1967. Plus, I didn't realize this when I originally watch these episodes when I was just 7 years old, but the series was set in 1997. {who know}:bolian:

Another question, Since Star Trek the original series and Lost In Space were on air during the same time frame which show had the better ratings? Of course, I think Star Trek had the better ratings.....does anybody knows for sure?

Unlike Star Trek, Lost In Space was renewed for it's season four, albeit it was aborted due to Irwin Allen and CBS not agreeing on the season four production budget.

Wow, I had no idea of this information for sure ~~ Thanks!!!

I don't have the figures for every season, but overall, during the 1966-67 season, Lost in Space placed 44th, while Star Trek placed 52nd.

Star Trek's ratings dropped each season, but it's possible that Lost in Space really tanked in 1967-68. right now, though, I can only speculate.

Wow, other information that I wasn't aware of....:klingon:
Anyway, To the cast and crew of "Lost In Space" Happy 50th Anniversary ~~ 1965 - 2015:):)

I'm fond of the episodes where they visit the prison ship with the frozen convicts, and the one where the robot grows so big they can walk around inside him. Another favorite is Anti matter man.

I'm going to guess that the reason was the move to shooting in color.

If you mean that in response to the question in the initial post about the costume changes in season 3, it doesn't work, since the show switched to color at the start of season 2.

The various revamps the show underwent in season 3 -- the new titles and theme music, new costumes, the introduction of the Space Pod, the switch to a more peripatetic format, the short-lived attempt to get away from Smith-centric stories and serve the whole cast better -- were most likely done for the same reason most TV series' revamps are done: in the hope of improving sagging ratings.

I had heard somewhere that the new traveling format in Lost in Space season 3 was in direct response to Star Treks visiting new planets each week format.

Not so much. After the rating drop in season 2 (due largely to head-to-head competition with Batman '66) the producers wanted to return LIS to its roots as an action-adventure story. Plus, Guy Williams had become quite upset with the campy nature of season 2 and wanted no part of its continuation. They believed the best way to save the show was to get the Robinsons back into space. New sets, new costumes, new threats, new destinations. New, new, new.

The reworked and much more dramatic opening credits and theme were meant to herald this "bold" new direction.
