Fallout 4

Yep, you need to take the Mysterious Stranger perk for him to appear.

Also, dialogue with the Lonesome Drifter in New Vegas suggests that the Mysterious Stranger is his father, and if you recruit the Lonesome Drifter for the Aces Theater, he rewards you with the Mysterious Magnum, which plays the Mysterious Stranger theme whenever you draw/holster it.

Bethsoft games tend not to be graphically top-of-the-line for their time. Which is fine because they're immense sandboxes of a variety rarely matched in gaming.

I like the tweaked art direction. There's still color grading, but instead of making it look like The Matrix or the heart of a dust storm, it just looks a bit juiced up and washed out. The Commonwealth (just presuming based on what we know) looks pretty interesting, a sort of post-post-apocalyptic dystopia with vaguely authoritarian overtones that freely mixes steampunk and cyberpunk. Looks cool.

Can't speak to anything else, since the teaser didn't offer much else besides aesthetics and some vague looks at setting and (very vague) story. We'll learn a bit more at E3, methinks.

I'm guessing the setting is east coast, maybe Philadelphia? The "Vault 111" number seems to suggest as much if nothing else. If there are any notable American landmarks in that I either missed them or aren't familiar with them.

Close enough. It's actually Boston and MA. One of its landmarks is the statue of Paul Revere, lit by the flashes of lightning. Fallout 3 even had a character from the area, a Dr Zimmer from The Institute, which refers to MIT. The state in general is referred to as The Commonwealth.

The confirmed setting is in Boston, Massachusetts; this confirmed from the trailer released on June 3rd of 2015, as well as Gamespot. It shows the Statue of Paul Revere and the USS Constitution in the trailer as well, along with the Boston State House with its unique Golden Dome. Scollay Square, the Bunker Hill memorial, and Fenway Park are also visible in the trailer.

Yeah, they're basically using the same engine that FO3 and NV had, but tweaked and upgraded. It looks last gen because it is.

Not that I mind, though. I just wish that they'd get around to fixing their hilariously bad animations!

Yeah, same engine, new renderer, I'm guessing. The one thing that jumps out in this trailer is the improved lighting and colour richness.

I've actually seen some people complain about the color, apparently one of the rules of post nuclear fiction is that nobody can ever clean anything up.

Looks kinda neat. I enjoyed FO3 and NV well enough, but not quite enough to finish either one. I'll make it a point to do so if I pick this up.

It can't be a post-apocalyptic wasteland if anything is pretty!

No one will give a shit about how anything looks after the bombs fall, right?

So I guess I'll get this, play it through, and then go visit Boston. That's what happened when I got Fallout 3 - shortly after playing it through, we went to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" at the Capitol Mall. And you know what? Thanks to Fallout 3, I actually already knew my way around!

Looks more like the Skyrim engine...

You are correct! It's the Creation engine, first used for Skyrim. I understand it is still based on Gamebryo, though, which they first used for Morrowind, so it doesn't look like they've made a clean break or anything. They went from FO3/NV to Skyrim, and now Skyrim to FO4, just iterating the same engine. (That's not to say they're using old tech; Gamebryo is still actively supported and enhanced.)

And people want to say that video games have no real world value whatsoever. :D

Yeah, that's almost certainly Bethesda's own 'Creation Engine'. FO3 & NV ran on Gamebryo IIRC, which was really on it's last legs by that point. Indeed to give one an idea of how creeky it'd gotten, I think it's the same engine Morrowind ran on.

ETA: note to self, press refresh before posting on a tab that's been open a while. ;)

Yeah, that's what I meant. Same engine as Skyrim, as I notice the lighting is much improved over FO3 and NV.

One interesting tidbit is that apparently this marks the first time the player-character will speak, which marks an overall change in Bethesda games. Makes me wonder if they'll also do that with the next Elder Scrolls. Should be interesting.

Also some interesting speculation here:

Here's a version of the orchestral theme someone did:

It sounds surprisingly hopeful in tone. I went back to Fallout 3's theme and was surprised at how dark it was. NV's was twangy had a sort of desolate feeling to it.

As much as I love New Vegas, the new music created for it wasn't one of its strong suits (the combat music is especially shitty.) I actually prefer Fallout 3's main theme to New Vegas's. Has a better beat to it. That being said, I love that New Vegas reused a bunch of the music from Fallout 1/2. Nostalgia feels! Oh, and the radio stations are better too. Screw Three Dog, I'll take Mr. New Vegas over that annoying POS anyday.

"I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" is all that is needed.
