Spoilers TNG, DS9, and VOY - Where is a Good Place to Start?

Well I am up to the third chapter of the The Lotus Flower in Worlds of DS9 #1. It seems different to me, but I am not far enough to say if it is bad or good, but it is keeping my interest.

Didn't they say that the Even Odds was somehow involved in the Ascendants crisis in one of the post-Destiny books?

Plagues of Night did, although Taran'atar received a distress call from the Even Odds when he was returning home in The Soul Key.

I just finished "A stitch in time" by the man himself, Andrew J. I was very impressed. Being a big fan of the character Elim Garak, This really gave a great rounding out of the character and a final salute (I'm guessing, as I'm just starting out with the DS9 reboot series). This book really covers the full breath of his life in memoir fashion; covering all the topics you wanted to know about him (if you haven't read it yet and wanted to know):

- How will Cardassia begin a new, amidst the rubble and ash of a billion people dead.
- Garak's childhood and growing up in the house of Tain (The source as well of his claustrophobia)
- Who his parents really are
- His adolescent training as an military operative
- Love, Romance, deceit and betrayal
- The sons of Tain
- His entry and rise into the Obsidian Order
- The wire
- The Bajoran children shuttle craft incident
- The real reason for his banishment to Terrok Nor
- Gul Dukat and their history of animosity towards each other
- His assignment to the Romulan embassy as a 'Gardener'
- Adjusting to life on DS9 as a disgraced Cardasian, "just a simple tailor"

There's more content in there, but those are the broad strokes. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Though it's out of print now, I picked it up used from abesbooks.

Though I'm determined to continue with the DS9 reboot, i'm going to make a detour into the 'Vulcan's Souls' trilogy, looks interesting.

Take care all.

If by "final salute" you mean that it's Garak's last appearance, then no, not at all... A character like that is WAY too awesome to leave alone!

4 chapters into Unity and I already find it a much more compelling book than Rising Son. In fact, I might have been too generous on Rising Son but I did like the second half of the book rather than the first. Unity though picks up with Lesser Evil takes off and I'm already noticing some things that the trek lit-verse can do better than the actual series.

For example, the chapter I read talked about the story of Audrid Dax going, with her husband on a mission to study the comet and encountering one of the parasites there. This was some awesome detail about who the parasites were, how close they were to the Trill Symbionts, and the cover ups involved (Referencing Equilibrium and how Trill is known to cover things up). It was just really gripping because we could never have stuff like this on a series. This relaunch is doing a great job developing not just Ezri but just Trill and the Symbionts in general that I am starting to think my next book will be The Lives of Dax, just because it's been so compelling. They also even referenced Christopher Pike, bringing 23rd and 24th century trek together.

I complained about a chapter in Rising Son being long because it was all exposition. Well, Unity had a 30 page chapter that was exposition but it was stuff we're already invested in. What SD Perry is already doing in this book is awesome and how the Parasites are being used and brought back is equally awesome.

Also, I've been trying to not say much but I was the one who started this thread, so keep that in mind if you're going to post stuff on books I haven't read yet. Thanks. :)

Oh that's awesome to hear. I just thought that, that was the reason they gave the book to Andrew J. to write, as a final send off for the character and to bring him full circle. But that's great news :)

oh yes, I highly recommend 'The lives of Dax', that was the previous book I read before 'Stitch in time'. I only thought one of the stories was very weak, with my favourite being a toss up between the one you mentioned and the one where I was just waiting to get to, Joran Dax - the serial killing pianist (and oh yes, did the story pay off ... and then it does again :) ). Great stuff.

Nope, it's because it's actually based on Robinson's personal notes about Garak that he wrote over the course of the series. It wasn't even Robinson's swan song with Garak; he later wrote both a play and a short story about the character that are both set after A Stitch in Time.

And the big books after, which are heavily indebted to A Stitch in Time, on Garak are mainly by Una McCormack - The Lotus Flower, The Never-Ending Sacrifice, Brinkmanship and The Crimson Shadow although he appears in some other books (especially Unity).

I guess an order of main appearances post-series are:

- A Stitch in Time (2375-6)
- Mission Gamma: Cathedral (2376)
- Unity (2376)
- The Lotus Flower (2376)
- The Never-Ending Sacrifice (2378)
- Destiny (2381)
- Brinkmanship (2383)
- The Crimson Shadow (2385)
- The Missing (2385)

He's also gonna turn up in an upcoming Voyager novel...

Robinson's ''The Calling'' doesn't quite fit the novel continuity (as Garak isn't on Cardassia by the point it is dated, I think, but it can certainly work). It is worth checking out, and ideas in it also influenced future novels. It's in Prophecy and Change.

In one of the relaunch books, all Garek really does is meet someone, it is a pretty short scene. I can't remember if it is Unity or Cathedral and am at work so I can't look it up.

But the Lotus Flower is pretty much a Garek story. I am about half way through it. Enjoying it. It is fun being with Keiko, Miles and Garek.

Unity is a great wrap up to "Season 8" of DS9. Wish what followed had the same gravitas for the DS9 story. Don't really get that till it gets picked up in RBoE

We finally made it to Unity on Literary Treks!
