NBC revives Coach, 13 episode ordered

I loved Coach back in the day and was bummed when during its last episode, but I can't believe it's being brought back.

No, it didn't set the world on fire, but it was a pleasant, easygoing funny show that that---like all good sitcoms---made you feel like the world was an ok place to be.

It's nice to have that.

I heard a brief tale a year ago fro ma production company of "Due South" being considered.

But "Coach"? I seriously wouldn't want to watch a sport series set in these times of politically correct madness gone wild and other stupidity. I hyave a feeling it will be used as a vehicle to promote some of that in episodes, using a familiar show and faces to appeal to feelings instead of intelligent thought. I know, synical, but I don't trust NBC.

Yeah, I guess when they do the rape episode, Coach Fox will just help cover it up instead of reporting it to the authorities.

Twin Peaks kind of makes sense, because it's one of those shows that was famously taken out of its original creator's hands, and it's the kind of show that would have flourished in the post-Sopranos premium network model, and also had a very unfinished ending.

Bringing back a show with 70 year old actors that a lot of people liked, but not *that* much just seems silly. All the shows that I think people would get really excited about bringing back have actors who are too big to be interested to come back. (Friends, Seinfeld). I guess maybe we're lucky nobody has thought of bringing back Family Matters yet with a set of kid Urkels.

In the same vein of Last Man Standing, if Jon Stewart's replacement ends up sucking we can all start snarking that the Daily Show didn't end, it moved to HBO.

That'd be amazing, if true. I could see Paul Gross returning, possibly as a mentor to someone younger. Would love to see Ray Vecchio return.

But yeah, COACH is an odd one to revive. Might as well revive Roseanne too if they're taking that tack.

Girl Meets World at least makes sense as a continuation.

I recently re-watched Coach when it came to Netflix. The series ends on a very definitive story point, having Hayden Fox (Craig T. Nelson) retiring and Dawber taking over as coach of the Orlando NFL team they'd been with for the last two or three seasons, and under Dawber's stewardship won two Super Bowls.

Then the show did something really weird which I've not seen done before or since: There whole cast gathered on the couch of the Fox home and Nelson addressed the camera, talking about how much they've loved being on the show and that Shelley Fabares cried during the table read and that they appreciated everyone watching, while Jerry Van Dyke just kept muttering that he'd see everyone back on set on Monday, as though he was refusing to believe the show was over. Not quite a final curtain call like you'd see on some sitcoms, but also not the emotional or hilarious last bit either.

Anyway. Regarding the sequel, the only way the show could work that I can suss out right now would be if the show is actually going to be about his adopted son with Christine Armstrong (Shelley Fabares) becoming a coach and Fox fills in the Jerry Van Dyke role of the goofy sidekick.

All that said, I'd still much prefer more original programming and wish studios and networks would give the original series they produce more of a chance to grow and thrive before shutting them down.

NBC...snatching up the desiccated remains of shows from other networks from almost 20 years ago.

And The Voice!
