New Star Trek Series: What would you use?

...but we would need James Cameron, Tessier-Ashpoole Funding, and every Cray XK6 and Tianhe-2 hybrid Supercomputer in existence for the amout of CG needed to actually accomplish the task...

I'd like to see a series set around the TOS era or slightly later, but including NuTrek changes.
Another female captain would be good to see.
A Spock/Data/Odo/Seven character is traditional in Trek, so it would be nice to see the "outsider" character interpreted in a new way. There's been talk about a ship AI - maybe a computer personality that can inhabit physical "avatars".
There's been talk about more of an ensemble approach, but I think if the main characters are interesting enough they should be able to carry the show. But it's important that secondary characters have real personalities and their own agendas.
Obviously we want more real continuity than the old shows, but on the other hand each ep should also be a satisfying experience on its own.
I don't care too much about the ship - something similar, so we know it's Trek, but different, so the show has its own personality.
I don't care what aliens are reused, but I'd like the aliens to be a lot more alien.

At this point, I think Trek needs to move BOLDLY forward where no Trek series has gone before.
I'm a nostalgic guy, and I love the old stuff and I really wanted to see a TOS reunion in ST3, but this thing has GOT TO MOVE FORWARD at some point.
I think the show needs social commentary, but I also think a certain believability needs to be allowed into the series. I don't think I'd have a problem with seeing a previous Trek character make a guest appearance here and there, but they really do need to do something new.
TNG went 70 or so years into the future, and I would think that this is a smart move. I think they need to go to the 25th Century, or at the very least move forward in real time after Nemesis but with totally new characters.

We're just about to the point where we could have realistic CGI crewmembers. I'd really like to see some aliens that aren't just people with prosthetics, or nonhumanoids viewed on a screen. The Tholians and Gorn on Enterprise were a good start. Now how about a Hamalki or a Kzin crewmember?

Rebooting TOS again would perhaps be going back to the well one too many times. Arguably, both ENT and the Abrams movies were an attempt to reboot the original series (they had the Captain, the Vulcan, and the Cap's southern friend, in ENT. They changed it by making the Vulcan a female, and the friend the engineer rather than doctor. They also swapped the nationalities of Sulu and Uhura, the helmsman and communications officer, for Mayweather and Hoshi).
I don't want them to go back to the Prime Universe again, as that is played out. We need a fresh reboot, with a new cast, new setting, new century.

- An intelligent Captain who used his wit to outsmart the villains, no fist-fights.
DS9
- Properly evolving and developing characters, they shouldn't be exactly the same in season 1 as they are in season 7.
- Consequences to actions, no reset button.
VOY
- Conflict (beyond the pilot episode!) - maybe the first Cardassian in Starfleet alongside a Bajoran crew member?
- Limited resources, if we're exploring deep space there shouldn't be a starbase or outpost handy to restock every other week.

- Untested ship.
- Untested crew.
- A proper sense of exploring the unknown.
- Sensible uniforms with pockets.
- The interaction between the characters.

I'd like to see the various officers be from different Federation species, and actually be aliens. I don't mean in terms of their appearance, but culturally and socially different from each other, not be homogenized somehow by their passage through the academy.
One way would be if the ship were crewed by officers from the various Federation Members "home fleets." Every Member donated some of their best officers and enlisted to this ship, maybe the series is set a few decades after the formation of the Federation, and the organization is trying to see if this kind of integration would even work.
The idea would not be to make all of these officers Starfleet officers, each would bring their own professional qualities to the ship, their own ideas and technics for solving problems.
Also their own prospective when it comes to off duty time.
^ This. This times infinity. After rewatchng parts of early Enterprise... it's ridiculous how similar it is.
That's why I think Trek needs to shake off a lot/all of it's traditions. No "Power Trio", no Spock/Data/Odo/EMH/Seven character, no aliens who's sole reason for existence is to provide commentary on human society (have you read the VOY series bible, it's almost obsessed with that aliens as commentary bullcrap) no Klingon crew-member who struggles with his/her heritage.. in short nothing that is a homage to TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT/TAS or any of the movies.
They need to get their heads out of their behinds and be creative.

The era of exploration, styling of sets and ships, a collective of adventurers out on the frontier going boldly...
TNG:
The intellectual approach, solving issues with diplomacy whilst building bridges and fostering better relations with alien races (though still with a little action here and there).
DS9:
Strong female characters, proper character development and growth, a large and interesting group of recurring/supporting characters, dealing with the consequences of their actions.
VOY:
Female captain, non-Starfleet alien advisor (they are in uncharted space after all).
ENT:
Special effects, long-running stories (Season 3), ship damage doesn’t just vanish.

This is tricky to balance. I'd like to see the Federation be less tolerant of certain things, e.g. the virtual enslavement of Ferenghi women, Klingons engaging in honour duels at every opportunity. Also, TBH I was never very comfortable with the Bajorans' place in the Trek universe, as they seemed to me to be a justification for religious fundamentalism.
If I was bringing it back, I'd try and update it so it doesn't resemble the 1950s - things to happen to show it was the future:

TOS:
- Time Period: 2278-2284, beginning shortly after the USS Bozeman's disappearance and ending a few months before TWOK
- Characters: Clark Terrell, Pavel Chekov, Harry Morrow
- Races: Klingons and Vulcans
- Races: Romulans (yes, they appeared in TOS, but I'd make them a regular, as was the case in TNG)
- Continuity: Although there would be several stand-alone episodes, I'd also have a fair amount of continuity woven into the series
- Races: Andorians (they were created for TOS but seldom used; I'd have an Andorian crew member among the main cast)

But wouldn't any form of sequel to a successful franchise essentially be an homage to the original in some ways? I mean, I do want a Star Trek series that does new stuff, but I certainly don't want it to be totally unrecognizable from the rest of the franchise.
Take the new movies for example, they are different and can be differentiated from the rest of the franchise. But they still feel as if it could fit in with the universe because it stayed true to the nature of the franchise (despite what some fans may claim).
I think what we need a Star Trek show that'd take a little bit of risk and do new things but build upon the franchise. Expand on some untouched areas? Yes. I see no problem. But there needs to be some kind of feel to it otherwise it may just become another one of those Science Fiction TV Shows that try to be the next best thing since Trek. Rather than being the New Entry to Trek.
