While that may seem far fetched I'll point out that they just brought TOS characters to the general audience, which before now I'm not sure I'd call popular among their target audience of young people.
And when it comes down to the suits choosing between tapping into old stuff or using genuinely new ideas involving Abram's universe - it seems they like to use old ideas as much as possible in general.
