I agree it's a spectrum and also the desires of the hardcore fans and general audience aren't always opposed to each other.

It is possible that they bring it back to Prime or converge the timelines while also aiming it at a general audience. While that may seem far fetched I'll point out that they just brought TOS characters to the general audience, which before now I'm not sure I'd call popular among their target audience of young people.

And when it comes down to the suits choosing between tapping into old stuff or using genuinely new ideas involving Abram's universe - it seems they like to use old ideas as much as possible in general.

If they went back to the Prime Universe they should so a series or movie set between ENT and TOS.

They're not going back to the prime universe.

The new Trek movies have been big successes, unless Trek 3 doesn't improve on STID then they'll continue for a while yet.

An equally valid question to the one in the OP:

What are the chances, now that Nolan's Dark Knight idea has played out, that DC will return Batman to the continuity/universe of the Adam West / Burt Ward era series?

Not kidding, I can see Gotham's Bruce Wayne becoming Adam West's Batman.

The TOS characters are the MOST popular and the MOST iconic. Everybody knows Kirk and Spock, not just fans. They have incredible name recognition.

To put it another way, do you think the mainstream media would have given the deaths of Jonathan Frakes, Nana Visitor, Robert Beltran or Jolene Blalock the same attention that they gave Leonard Nimoy?

This is a thought I've had.

Given the propensity (under some theories) of timelines to reconverge further down the line when the 'ripples' of changes have subsided, it could happen.

How far past the return of Voyager do you have to go for any differences between the two versions of TOS to become immaterial ? Which planet was destroyed - Romulus, Vulcan, neither, both ?

Don't be silly. First, they'll go back to the continuity of the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher movies, then they'll go back to the Adam West continuity, and then back to the old b/w movie serials.

Because pop culture always runs in reverse . . . :)

Yeah that would be good. Technically, the novels are already doing that with the current ENTERPRISE books.

As much as I would like to see a return to the Prime Timeline, I agree with everybody that says it won't happen. I'd love it, but it's unlikely.

But, who knows? Never say never, and all that.

They didn't have much luck with Ent. I don't think they are eager to renew the experience.

Oh good. I kid you not, since the first episode, I've been imagining Gotham's Penguin with the laugh of Burgess Meredith.

If there is an end to nutrek I just hope it won't be anytime soon or it would most likely be the death knell of ST altogether.

Then the franchise is dead. The Trek Prime isn't ever coming back. It died in 2002 and was kept on live support until 2005.

It's been 10 years, and even then it was woefully unpopular with the people who were supposed to lap it up. Why in Spock's name would you bring it back?

I love Prime Trek and have it all on DVD and can watch it anytime I like, and I do! I am in the middle of watching all 7 seasons of TNG.

But it is time for something new and NuTrek is doing a great job and I say let that continue. Prime Trek had grown stale for me and it was time to do something different and radical.

Name recognition yes, but popularity among young people before JJ's trek came out? I don't think so. JJ brought them to this audience. Not to mention Khan.

That's a really morbid comparison but yeah, if Patrick Stewart died it would be all over the media. And if we're just judging name recognition then Picard isn't far behind Kirk & Spock.

No, Stewart wouldn't get nearly the same kind of attention - Picard's quite a ways behind Kirk & Spock.

No, I meant any prediction from Philly B for what comes after "Trek 3." It doesn't have to be about Prime.

    Gotta agree with that.

I think that Picard may not be as well known as Spock, but certainly Stewart is as well known as Nimoy. Although I think he's really the only actor from the TNG era that would even come close.

I guess I never thought of that as appealing to the fan base, especially considering how much complaining there was about the catsuits of Seven and T'Pol. So perhaps they thought they were appealing to the fan base, but in reality I don't think that was the case. I think they were just thinking that sex sells and it was a case of trying to raise already falling ratings. The problem came before that and is a lot more complicated. I don't think it can be boiled down to catering to a fan base.
