William Shatner claims he will not be included in ST 3

If this report is to be believed (and I have no reason not to take the man at his word) William Shatner will not be appearing in the new Star Trek film.

Although Shatner was approached by J.J. Abrams at one point to appear in Orci's film, it now appears that the new creative team is likely going in another direction. In this interview Mr Shatner says he has not been approached and knows nothing of the film.

“I don’t even know the guy who’s writing it. I know the director was let go, someone else was writing it…I have no prior knowledge. I am completely in the blind. I sincerely mean no one has talked to me about anything, nor should they.”

Despite claims to the contrary Shatner has been pretty straight forward in his discussions about being included in the new films with the one exception of letting the cat out of the bag when Abrams/Orci approached him to be in what would have been their version of ST 3. Even that was more of a misunderstanding than Shatner being misleading.

Hopefully the new writers and director can find a way to work William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy into the new film...If they don't it will be such a wasted opportunity on the 50TH anniversary of the franchise.

I have a bad feeling that instead of getting a thank you to the fans for the last 50 years we are going to get a franchise overhaul that has Star Trek trying to be the next "Guardians of the Galaxy" as some reports have indicated.

I hope it's not a film designed to be a thank you to the fans. We got a "valentine to the fans" about 10 years ago and that was the worst box of candy I've ever seen.

If Shatner is in it, great. If he isn't in it, great. I just want an entertaining movie.

Bad choice of words on my part...I agree that the film shouldn't be fan service...That said the original plan was to include both Shatner and Nimoy in roles that served the film. I hope we still get to see some version of this.

I also don't want to see ST turned into Guardians of the Galaxy. GOTG was great for what it was, but I don't want ST to attempt to be that...I fear with the director they have brought in combined with some comments from executives that Star Trek will cease to be Star Trek in an attempt for bigger box office returns...I just don't think ST is best served trying to be something it isn't.

It wont be all that bad if Shatner does not return,. its time for the new cast to do their own thing and don't get overshadowed by the blast from the past with TOS kirk, spock and any thing tos related. shatner time as kirk in treklore canon ended in 1995, he died. no more blast from the past.

That was also my first thought.

Also, using the 50TH anniversary of the franchise to create a story that includes Nimoy and Shatner feels forced. If the story is organic, it will be blind to external influences like that and such an inclusion would make more sense than if it were a "stunt." I'd love to see them both in the film but, as many actors say, only if it makes sense to the story and does something meaningful and natural with the characters. Otherwise, I don't want to be disappointed - or unhappy on their behalf - by cheating the story to include them.

This is more or less the same thing Shatner has answered every time since 2007 or 2008, whenever someone asks him about whatever the upcoming Trek movie is. Yet he somehow makes it entertaining enough that the interviewers keep coming back to ask him the same question, again and again.

Whatever this next movie turns out to be, what it should not be a is "thank you to the fans for the last 50 years". Thank-yous of that sort are the province of a television special, one presented by the directors/producers/stars of previous Trek incarnations (including William Shatner, if he is inclined to participate.)

Let the movie be a Star Trek movie and not an event movie. If there is any acknowledgement of the anniversary contained therein, either let it be very subtle and over quickly... or place it at the end of the closing credits, where it won't get in the way of the story.

I "hear" you, Posters , I really do. But I feel that there is something larger here, bigger than normal because of the 50th AND because of the immeasurable impact the Franchise has had on, well, just about everything. I am not talking about the doors to 10 Forward opening to the cries of "Surprise, Happy 50th!!!" as Kirk and Spock walk through, greeting every biped and not that has ever been in Star Trek (plus Dan Akroyd, inexplicably, in the back row.) I am not talking about sacrificing story line or sanctity of current actors and ships. But there IS an issue of a kind of propriety in my mind, and Kirk and Spock are part of it.

It wouldn't be the Enterptise without a Suiu at the helm.

Yeah, sorta like that...

The new Trek films seem pretty optimistic to me. I mean, did you see future London, and future San Fransisco? We're in space! We're allies with many different aliens! People everywhere look hale and healthy! Seems like a great future.

Yawn.....

Really at this point who but the most die hard Kirk fans care. The "We gotta get some characters from another series into the latest one" has been done to death IMHO.

We had Spock shoehorned into the first two reboots. We don't need to do it with Kirk in the third.

Plus I'm tired of the "no main character really "dies"....at least until the actor does in real life.

With Spock it TSFS it was novel and clever.....now it's just lame. Tasha Yar dies..but not really since they brought Denise Crosby back several times. Data dies...but not really because his "katra" is apparently alive in B4. Scotty should be dead in TNG, but wait he's alive and well in a transporter. Dax dies, oh but her spirit lives on in the new Dax in the creature in her. The Original Enterprise is destroyed, but kind of not because star fleet just happened to have another Constitution refit lying around to rename Enterprise. NuKirk dies....for all of 15 minutes until superblood brings him back. Original Kirk dies in the beginning of Generations, oh wait he's alive in this ribbon that's named after shampoo. Then he dies again for real.

He's dead. Let it go. Stop this he comes back because of something with the time space continuum or the Borg find and revive his body or some other bullshit. People die, it happens all the time and is for good. Quit this "We'll kill someone, but not really" crap. It's played out.

I was really hoping to see one last class reunion for the 50th anniversary, but I'll settle for a good movie.

So good that it will lead to a new TV series...

:)

Agreed in Fizbin Spades, but try to take all of the things you have pointed out above just for a minute, and look at what this particular confluence of events is. It is the 50th. They are still alive, albeit old. This is Extraordinary. Somehow, some way, doing it Correctly, not gratuitously, Kirk (and realSpock) shouold be in there somewhere.
