Didn't know the NCC-1701 had a fine border around it.

Really nice!!!

It's a damn shame Abrahams and co. couldn't have just fine tuned up and spruced up the original design a little to make look more modern, but still basically resemble the TOS Enterprise. Instead of that monstermash they created instead.

Hey I guess though one Romulan going back in time and destroying one Federation starship changes everything in the entire universe. Starship design and being built in the middle of Iowa, Klingon DNA, Kirk going from a brilliant young starfleet officer who works his way up the ranks through determination and bravery to a guy who constantly makes terrible decisions, yet somehow keeps getting promoted to higher and higher positions.......

Some of those photos on Sprague's FB page look very familiar -- I known I've seen them before. Where did he get them from?

bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch

The subject isn't the reboot movies.

Indeed. Looking more closely at those photographs, I can see bordering around the registry number I'd never noticed on-screen. It also looks like there's a possible hull breach near the bridge, perhaps on deck 2 or 3.

You're right, that bordering I've never seen before. Didn't the movie version also have some bordering around it's saucer decals? However light this is, it would at least make decal borders something at least a decade or two (in-continuity) earlier, rather than a full change in styling.

The close-ups of the hull lettering makes me really appreciate how much they tried to get the Enterprise as close aesthetically to then-modern Navy vessels, as if the evolution from seafaring ship to starship was intentional from the start (and probably was; after all, Jeffries was credited for incorporating and then futurizing the common aircraft fuselage for the Enterprise).

Could that border be the clear cutouts around the decals?

Now that you mention it, that's exactly what it looks like. In-universe, though, I prefer to think of it as an earlier version of the bordering seen on the refit during TMP.

That was my first thought as well, but I like Sran's in-universe explaination.
Thanks for these shots and for whoever took them. They're magnificent.

Gorgeous pics. I live only a few miles from Udvar-Hazy but was sick as a dog on Saturday, so i wasn't able to see the model in person. Thanks for posting this!

(Edited to add) I don't envy the Okudas and everyone else on the Enterprise team having to decide whether the model gets a restoration (i.e., return the model to its original appearance, using modern materials) versus a conservation effort (i.e., shore up the nacelles, touch up the paint cracks, etc.) to prevent further aging-related damage. The model is in really sorry shape as Sprague's excellent photos show, so some conservation is obviously going to be needed. But as for restoration--which version of the model are we restoring to? How it looked in season 3? How it looked in the first production episode ("The Corbomite Maneuver")? How it looked in the second pilot ("Where No Man Has Gone Before") or the first ("The Cage")? If they go that far back, are they going to put the big dish and the oversized bridge dome back, change the impulse and warp engines appearance, and all the other little details?

Looking at his pics on Facebook, the deflector dish (or whatever it is in the original seris) is on a damned hinge! It was made to rotate! I never knew that.
