Season 6: Is it me?

I'm not sure I see a big quality drop anywhere in TNG. (prior to season 7 which I haven't rewatched yet), although a lot of people disagree with me. Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia. There some episodes I hate but no point where I'm like "from here on, it's bad." There's some weak episodes towards the end and rocky episodes at the beginning (up the long ladder worst episode in the series) but overall I think it evens out.

Nah, I agree with you. Season 6 and 7 were a slow decline in quality, I think the episodic formula simply grew stale. It has not nearly as many good episodes, in my eyes, as did Seasons 4 and 5.

On the positive side you have "Tapestry", "Face of the Enemy" and "Lessons" to look forward to.
I thought there were boring parts in "Lessons".

There were some good episodes in Season 6: Rascals, A Fistful Of Datas, Chain Of Command, Ship in a Bottle... to name a few.

Overall, I like S6. I avoid 'Lessons' and 'Aquiel' when flipping through episodes.

Commander Darrin just isn't Vash, and I think I hold it against her.

'Aquiel' I don't think needs any further explanation, I have yet to see someone give that episode more than a 'barely tolerable' rating.

I really enjoy season 6 (while really disliking only Aquiel and Birthright 2). This may not be the case for many others since I like Genesis and Masks a lot too. :rommie:

Genesis and Masks are both stupid, but stupid funny, not stupid boring as other episodes.

I thought season six was strong, comparable in quality to seasons 3-5, with a lot of excellent episodes, many of them mentioned. It's season seven where the drop-off is.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I said, yes.

So I guess you must've missed the first two words of the original post..."So far".

Which you would think would indicate NOT the whole season.

Good job.

:brickwall:

All the stuff I said in my last post, and this is the only thing you chose to reply to? I made my point. Clearly we disagree. Let it go, Indiana.

GOOD! Now you know how I feel! Welcome to my world!

When I started this thread, I was hoping we could discuss some of the early S6 episodes.

You should try reading posts instead of BURNING them.

So I just finished watching:

A Fistful of Datas---I enjoyed this. It's a kind of Shore Leave type episode, and I enjoy episodes where the crew slows down. Not everything needs to be a Borg, Cardassian or Romulan incursion or diplomatic drama. I just didn't care for the soundtrack with its western motifs.

Quality of Life---This was an interesting episode. I thought the first 15-20 minutes or so were hot and cold, but the episode came ROARING back with a very Star Trek story. It didn't seem like it at first, but it ended up being a good Data episode. LOVED Picard's last line...

Chain of Command Part I---I've always enjoyed this two part episode, and I enjoyed seeing a sort of real world reaction to a new captain coming aboard.

Ronny Cox as Captain Jellico was PHENOMENAL. Probably one of my favorite guest star roles in TNG, and I---for one---wish we would've seen him again. He was an interesting character. I wonder what kind of commander he was on the USS Cairo because he seems hard to get along with. But then, he's on a time sensitive mission aboard the Enterprise and probably isn't behaving the way he normally would.

Two things stood out to me in this episode that didn't make sense:

1) The team of Picard, Beverly and Worf. Picard and Beverly seem a bit long in tooth to be mounting this kind of mission with only Worf to support them both. Yeah, I know Picard and Beverly had specialized training for this mission, but that seemed kinda feeble. I would've thought Data, Riker, or O'Brien or some combination of those 3 would've made sense as well. Hell, they should've had Picard lead a group of younger, gung-ho Starfleet marines in there ALONG with Beverly or Worf. This wasn't a dealbreaker or anything, but in an episode that had so much great writing, this left a tiny hole in the script.

2) As cool as it is to see Picard dressed in all black and leading a special ops team, did Starfleet really think that the Cardassians wouldn't notice Picard being reassigned last minute? Again, minor quibble, but I think it raises the question.

3) The one thing that did bug more than the previous two points was that Picard, Beverly and Worf had to arm-twist a shady Ferengi to get them to Cardassia. For a top-secret mission with MONUMENTAL repercussions, I can't believe these guys would trust some shady Ferengi to not blow their cover...particularly when Latinum is always so appealing to them. Surely Starfleet could've found a smoother, more intelligent, covert way to get them into Cardassian space? Ok, so maybe they didn't want to hit up Gowron again, but what about Kurn?

Still, I love this episode and I'm actually going to stop writing and go watch Part II...

I extremely dislike Jellico, as it should be. This tells me Ronny Cox did an excellent job with the role.

Totally. Ha, I just realized that we've seen two great Cardassian related Starfleet captains in Jellico and Maxell (Bob Gunston), and we never saw either of them again. What a shame.

Just saw Chain of Command Part II.

It's even stronger than the first part.

David Warner and Ronny Cox were both superb.

How the hell Patrick Stewart didn't win an Emmy for his work on TNG, I'll never know. I think Stewart is every bit as good as Bryan Cranston as Heisenberg, James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, or Jon Hamm as Don Draper.

Great episode.

I'm excited because now I get to start on DS9!

In my franchise marathon, I decided to watch the episodes in chronological order. I hadn't seen DS9 Seasons 4-7, but I've already seen TNG once and DS9 Seasons 1-3 once, so this should spice it up.

I can't remember if Jellico gets promoted to Admiral by the end of the series. Sometimes I get Lit and Screen mixed up.

Maxwell is in prison for the rest of his natural life.
