Season 6: Is it me?

Perhaps I should have been more clear. Seasons 6-7 had their gems, to be sure, but the overall quality had started to wane. There got to be more substandard episodes than good ones. New showrunners should have been brought in for each new show; DS9 gets their own showrunner, Voyager gets their own showrunner, ENT gets Manny Coto from day one, that sort of thing.

Ideally, Voyager would have never happened. New cast would have been brought into TNG to fill voids left by leaving cast, many, if not most of the stories would have been pitched as TNG stories, with new writers telling them so they're fresh, and TNG and DS9 run for many years together, crossing over as needed.

Season 7 is the one that lost it for me.

On the season 7 blu-ray, the writers speak candidly about how they felt burnt out on TNG in that last season, not so much from having done it from so long, but because the production time of the season got pushed back so they could do the movie at the end of it. So, rather than getting their usual amount of vacation time between seasons, they instead moved virtually straight from working on the end of season 6 right into working on stories for season 7, while the movie was ongoing as well. The result were episodes that felt a notch lower in quality than the episodes that came before them.
