TOS: Savage Trade cover

With David's permission, I plan to assume at least two production blocks' worth of Archer-class ships. Possibly more. It strikes me as the sort of vessel that Starfleet would want a lot of, forward deployed for any number of operational requirements. Not unlike the Danubes and Excelsiors...

Suffice to say, I like seeing starships named for Marc Garneau and Roberta Bondar much better.

:techman:

I'm thinking that Markonian's suggestion of some future archer named Montana may be the easiest way to explain the name discrepancy.

It will be interesting to read the book and see if the Montana is even referred to as Archer-class at all. Perhaps they just needed a smaller TOS-era ship, and Mr. Drexler used the Archer-class because the model was already available. Christopher already mentioned that it was cheaper to reuse an existing model when discussing the alien ships; the same thing could apply to the Montana as well.

^Arrows don't generally spiral, do they?

Obviously, I meant in terms of accuracy. You know... because Joe Montana was accurate. You can tell by his career stats. As far as I know, arrows don't spiral.

Oh...and Joe Montana played football. In case you were wondering who he was :)

I'm also curious as to why the Starfleet pennant leaves a cutout in the shadow on the hull of the Montana?

Wow. That's awesome. What a shame that paperback novels are only so big.

What's that starship class alongside the Enterprise and the Montana? They remind me of Kazon ships, but they don't match any Kazon ship model.

They're Mister Tret's vessels from ENT: "Extinction".

Ships of the class also appear on the cover for DS9: The Missing.
Maybe this novel features a re-surfacing of the Loque'que virus. It could explain why the entire complement of outpost Zeta Gibraltar is missing, as described in the blurb.

Yes, that is a possibility. The Romulans used the virus as a biological weapon to wipe out the Haakonans during the Earth-Romulan War. (To Brave the Storm)

Also, there doesn't seem to be a connection to the ships from DS9 The Missing.

According to editor Margaret Clark, Savage Trade will be "sort of a sequel to The Savage Curtain".

And now I'm having a doh! moment becuase after That Which Divides, should have seen the similar title indication a sequel to something.
Which episode was That Which Divides a sequel to?

That Which Survives.

^I have never heard of Stephen Harper. I don't know anything about Canadian politics.

That's the problem with a lot of Americans. But then again, I know Americans who don't know the name of their own Vice President. Regarding the cover - it is beautiful art.

Please don't talk about me as a category. I am not generic.

I gave up paying much attention to news in general a long time ago. There came a point when I couldn't decide whether I was more depressed by the news itself or by the deterioration in the quality and integrity of its reporting.

Be honest, how many foreign politicians do you actually know of?

Always Canada/US/Mexico. In Europe, always UK, Germany, and France. Many other countries as well. Russia, China, Australia, as well as others that are prominent in the news.

I'm an American, and I can name Joe Biden. And Enrique Pena, Raul Castro, Cristina Fernandez, Dilma Rousseff, David Cameron, Michael Higgins, Francois Hollande, Mario Rajoy, Matteo Renzi, Alexis Tsipras, Viktor Orban, Petro Poroshenko, Vladimir Putin, Haider al-Abadi, Hassan Rouhani, Ashraf Ghani, Narendra Modi, Nawaz Sharif, Xi Jinping, Park Geun-hye, Shinzo Abe, Ma Ying-jeou, Tony Abbott, and John Key off the top of my head for starters

My apologies, Christopher, there was no intent to insult and I'm not saying you're generic. The fact of the matter is I find it amazing that there are so many people who do not know who the leaders of major or at least neighbouring countries are. I have served with many nationalities and by a large margin it's Americans who do not know. I fish a couple of weeks a year with US friends from New Jersey and Maryland. One of my friends could not name the VP. In his case, he pointedly said he didn't care and like in this case, I did/will not press. I suppose people have their reasons; I simply don't understand.
