Who is actually asking for Trek to be "not fun"? I think people take that satirical Onion video way too literally, as if there are actually fans out there that say "I hated nuTrek, it was too fun".
But you see, the Onion video was based on something, and indeed were an outsider to spend one day going through the Trek BBS he'd be left with the impression that hard core "pure" Trekkies don't want Star Trek to be fun.
Hell, you want funny, pause the Onion video when they show a Star Trek forum page (which suspiciously resembles Trek BBS) and look at the topics being discussed. They really aren't that much different from what was common around here back in 2009. My favourite is "My kid like the movie, Abrams is an honourless petaQ!"
That sounds like the script isn't written yet or at least not finished. So maybe an old script was really tossed and the rumours were true in this regard.

Well, at least, Simon is trekker.

If it is true, I think they are lost.
Which was fine accept that it came off as mostly Pike chewing Kirk out for not being a genocidal holier than thou asshole, becuase he saved a pre-warp civilization.

Of course, now Scotty'll be the star of the film.
It has to be at least 500. And with new ones still coming out monthly, it won't be long before the novels eclipse the episode count.
Add to that X-hundred number of comic books... dozens of videogames... thousands of fanfics...
I know there are 700 Star Trek ebooks...
Well, I do understand that point of view, I agree with Lance that I have yet to see a convincing argument against Nero's destruction, due to what we know the characters know. Kirk had no way of knowing where the black hole would end up, and given how powerful Nero's ship was, there is no reason not to assume it could end up elsewhere, and he starts all over again.
Maybe Kirk could have been more remorseful at the lack of a choice, but then the same could be argued over Kruge, Chang, and other TOS villains.
I do understand the tiredness of Kirk's growing pains. I think 09 and ID did a great job showcasing his maturing process, culminating in his sacrifice in the end (and I have no qualms over the super-blood.). I don't think Kirk was being sent back to the Academy as a cadet, but as an instructor, much like Spock was in 09. I don't think he would have ended up as XO without Pike's intervention, or captain unless Marcus thought he could manipulate him.
So, I think Trek III will show as a captain based on his own merit, and that outcome will be as close to TOS Kirk as we will get.
Which is not any different than Picard in Season 1-2, chewing on other officers for wanting to violate the Prime Directive, especially Riker when he had the powers of the Q.
That scene was very Star Trek, IMO

Who the hell is Doug Jung? The only person I can find is this guy, and his list of credits hardly seems like a suitable talent to write a movie, let alone one under this much scrutiny.

I think I'll wait for actual confirmation of his hiring before debating the merits of his work.
One feature 12 years ago. And only a handful of episodes from TV shows with a 5 year and 4 year gap between work. It appears he co-created Dark Blue, which, fair play to the guy - I just don't think I buy this guy working with Simon Pegg - someone whom has had no prior working experience with (going on his IMDb page, again, I'm not even sure this is the right guy).
Pegg co-writing seems to support the idea that they're going for a lighter GotG-style comedic romp.
It's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, considering the first 700 episodes of Doctor Who were multi-part serials. Most of those serials could have been trimmed by half and still told the same story.
Not to mention, the time travel aspect gives more flexibility in telling stories.
