I imagine "transwarp beaming" is just a general term for "faster than warp beaming", the same way "transwarp drive" is just a general term for "faster than warp drive". So any sort of interstellar transporter beam is a form of transwarp transportation.

I found this to be another wonderful book from Una McCormack. As others have mentioned, I loved the style of writing (especially the bits where she lets the readers' imaginations fill in the blanks, and the almost complete lack of technobabble), the Captain's Log introductions, the Athene Donald (Yes! Let's have more novels set aboard this marvellous ship), revisiting characters (Pulaski, Peter Alden, Corazame), and the really quite tense, but also warm, Cardassian/Romulan storyline.
I'm going to have to read Brinkmanship again to get my next Una/Tzenkethi fix!

I liked them; the author did something similar with the Tzenkethi transmissions in Brinkmanship.
If anyone remembers the original blurb for The Missing, it mentioned that Ro Laren was reading Picard's logs for guidance and inspiration.
I never read blurbs. I was "burnt" by blurbs that gave out too many details, so to be safe I don't read them any more at all.
Were it not for the copy editing issues I mentioned (and a few I haven't), I'd have given it an "above average" instead of an "average." I liked the Picard log entries, and (even though I'd forgotten the Abramsverse usage of it) the transwarp beaming angle. Although it's an odd coincidence that two consecutive ST novels would involve odd offshoots of transporter technology (the alfacite effect in Foul Deeds, and transwarp beaming in the present opus) with deleterious side effects.
I noticed this as well, and while I don't mind the author trying something different, I just didn't care for this style of storytelling. In fact, I find myself somewhat disagreeing with a lot of other posters about how good this story is. While I didn't dislike it, I also didn't love it, I just feel like it's an ok story and not as good as the author's previous work. I think the portions I enjoyed the least were about the People and the Chain. However, I did enjoy the Athene Donald/Pulaski stuff, and especially all the Quark, Odo, and Garak scenes. So, while there were some things I liked, there was just enough that didn't work for me that I can't vote better than Average, which I don't think is really that bad. Hopefully I'll enjoy the author's next story more.
I'm a little over half-way through right now, and I'm finding that it is not that good of a book. The transitions seem to occur rather randomly, and I'm not even sure where the Athene Donald is heading (I thought it was the Gamma Quadrant, but there was no mention of the ship going through the wormhole), or where it is in Chapter 8.
But I'm also finding that the characters are not acting in character: a lot of them seem to be very gung-ho in this book. Blackmer I find is not acting like the Blackmer that we've come to see over the last couple of books. At the end of Chapter 6?, when Blackmer asks when he can make an arrest, I just found that that line, just the way it was written, it was so out of left-field for the character, and it really made it feel like Blackmer was the Worf of Laurell K. Hamilton's Nightshade novel, where it felt like Worf was having trouble "holding his horses".

If I recall correctly, it opened at least once at the end of Revelations and Dust.
I was reading page 185 yesterday, and I found that that page really felt like the scene needed to be expanded, since it felt rather odd just the way that it was inserted in there. Sure Crusher went to see Oiliy, but it was for 2 very short paragraphs, and then she was back in Ro's office, that it was like "Why was that in there?" Sure there was a little bit if information related tot he plot, but I really found that that tiny bit of information could've been added into a later scene, and that entire scene was unnecessary.

Announced as a "Direct Sequel" to The Fall I was REALLY looking forward to this book. However, I was disappointed. I re-read the last Fall book to remember what had happened. This book in my opinion was NOT a sequel to the Fall. It mentioned nothing that happened in that story arc. To me it was a stand-alone DS9 book. Nothing more. I guess I will have to wait to see where Picard and crew are headed to.

The novel is more a sequel to Brinkmanship.
I think this novel needed to be edited a little bit better, as some of the pages, like I mentioned with page 185, have tiny bits of information thrown in that are then restated in a better scene later on. It sort of reminds me of the commentaries that sometimes accompanies deleted scenes on movies and the director's will mention how a certain scene was cut, even though it was fun, due to it just not playing well or giving out duplicate information. And I think that's what we have here with "The Missing"---it missed an edit.
Sofar, I agree. About 2/3's in, and I like it. But...... the flow seems off at times. Not quite right. Transistions seem harsh at times. Even with chapters. At times, Beverly would be talking to Ro, and Ro suggests talking to the people about something. The line would literally be 'so Beverly talked to them, and reported back to Ro'. It seems so quick and, dare I say it..... cheap..... Which I hate to say, because I love Una's work.
Having said that, story wise, I'm really liking to sofar.
