Just one thing:

I can understand Paul to a certain extent, and I can understand Dimesdan to a certain extent.

But what I can't understand at all is a mod openly endorsing a poster using this forum exclusively for drive-by advertisement posts.

Perhaps because as editor of the official magazine for 5 years, I have contributed a lot to debates on here, and do so in addition to the post of the review - so where there have been questions raised by the review content (such as my comment about the uniform in Greg Cox's Voyager/TOS novel review), I've then engaged in debate about it?

Yet the only posts you seem to do lately are pointing to a review and that's it.

Say, when Defcon posts a link in a review thread, if I remember rightly, he also includes the cliff notes of what he thinks. Just because you were the editor of a magazine for a while, doesn't mean what you do should be encouraged.

And as he rightly says, all you seem to be doing is a "drive by advertisement" and because of that, I have no intention on visiting the site.

I saw over on The Trek Collective that Dayton Ward is thinking about a sequel to this book. Personally, I'd love to see that! Who do we have to beg to make this happen?

The Trek collector site had Star Trek book updates and Dayton Ward says on his writer blog he has been writing down notes for a sequel to continue the story From History's Shadow.

Fascinating novel. Interesting that the invading aliens took an interest in the in the hardware of other extraterrestrial visitors, I think that more could have been done with that, like an encounter with species that wants to conquer Earth. I liked the reappearance of the stranded Vulcan from ENT, as well as Aegis agents.

Prompted by the references in DTI: The Collectors, I've reread From History's Shadow.

The book hasn't lost any of its appeal. One question popped up, however - how did Mestral deal with his pon farr while on Earth? Sure, he could've had intercourse with a random Human, but in NF, pon farr included a mental component that he couldn't have with a Human without revealing his true nature.

I'll be checking the posts in this thread again whether this question may have come up already.

In "Blood Fever", Tuvok indicated that Vorik could in theory meditate his pon farr away if he tried really hard.

That solves the issue. Neat!
I assume Spock coudn't use the same method back in the day because he was half-Human, or much younger than the steadfast Tuvok.

Actually the meditation didn't work. Tuvok said it was an alternative, but only after mentioning mating and combat to the death, suggesting that it's far from a surefire solution.

Then again, Vorik was able to get past his blood fever with a nonlethal combat, so maybe the meditation helped a little.

Dayton Ward posted somewhere that the novel was originally a DS9 novel with the framing story set after "Little Green Men" - I hope any sequel might revisit that idea.

That option is ruled out by the book. Maggie was interested in becoming intimate with Mestral in 1957/58, but he left town to avoid her learning he's Vulcan.

The only explanation I can think of is that Dayton Ward forgot about accounting for pon farr in this novel. I can't find any reference whatsoever to it in From History's Shadow.

Looks like hes got to go back and write a sequel. Mestral's later life is mostly a blank, and I'd like to know whether his xenosociological notes were recovered at some point. Or whether he returned to Maggie.

Maybe Mestral was just asexual without being aromantic? I don't remember the specifics of his and Maggie's relationship before leaving to keep his secret in From History's Shadow, but I honestly don't see any reason in principle why there couldn't be vulcans in that spot on the sexuality spectrum. Vulcans should have as much hormonal variance as humans, really.
