End of an Era

I always knew this day would come, but I didn't think it would be this soon.

Yesterday, I placed an order with B&N for Face of Evil and Day of the Daleks. They were the only two classic Who stories available on DVD that I didn't already own.

That means, until the Beeb hurries up and finds some more lost episodes, or works on animating the missing eps, I'm done. Underwater Menace will be coming out sometime next year, in theory. Once that's out ... that's it.

I already have all of the modern series and spin-offs on DVD or blu-ray except for series 8, which will wait until Best Buy does their yearly $20 sale.

Kind of feels sad, not happy, that the journey is ended.

But on the plus side, you have them all and can watch them again whenever you like. (I still don't own The Sensorites and Nightmare of Eden. But that is a choice. Until they're dirt cheap, I'm not rushing to get them.)

Not sure where you are.

Barnes & Noble has a sale running. Now that I think it about it, today might be the last day. 50% off all British TV DVD/Blu-Rays. That's why I finally went for the special editions of The Aztecs (with Galaxy Four) and Vengeance on Varos. I had been thinking about the Varos SE for awhile, but didn't really want to double-dip. But, 50% off, and throw in a coupon for another 25% off on top of that, and I ended up splurging. :D

I'm in Wales, UK. I've seen both Sensorshites and Eden relatively cheap, but wasn't inclined to pick them up at the time. They're two of my all time least favoured stories, so they can gather dust for a while longer. :)

Same boat here. But, it's a good boat to be in! My only question now is whether to double dip on some the special editions that came out after the original, non-special release.

Mr Awe

Can't speak for all the special editions, as I haven't got them all, but going by those I do have, yes, it's worth double-dipping. For the special features, if nothing else.

Nope, just checked and it's 5% off, not 50%. Big difference! Too bad though, I would've double dipped for 50% off.

Hint, the SEs for the classic series are $10 cheaper at Amazon.

Mr Awe

If the German season 25 has the extended Silver Nemesis that could always be another purchase!

It probably won't though. :(

They MIGHT do "the Crudade" - They have two episodes like "The Underwater Menace", so they may animate or telesnap the rest. Frankly, I wouldn't mind some sort of reconstruction for all the missing episodes since they have audio for all of them - perhaps a redo of the Lost In Time discs now that room has been made with the release of UM, Moonbase, Tenth Planet, Web of Fear and Enemy of the World (and again, perhaps The Crusade).

Then again, you could always hope that "The Curse of the Fatal Death" or "Dimensions in Time" gets released someday ;)

OK, looks like that sale ended yesterday. Glad I got those two ordered when I did!

I heard somewhere recently that there were 19 special editions made, and then 2 Entertain decided not to do any others. Has anyone heard anything more about that? If they aren't releasing the animated versions, and they aren't releasing SEs, what are they doing?

Nothing, probably. If they're all released then there's nothing left to release. Other than Nu Who DVDs, and re-issuing various Classic Who DVDs in boxsets.

I came across a list of out of print DW DVDs. I was surprised just how many are OOP. I started checking prices, and damn!

War Games is selling for four HUNDRED dollars. Four hundred. For one story.

All of the others are $60+, with at least a half-dozen of the ones I checked going into the $250-$300 range.

I can't imagine trying to start collecting today. I wonder why they'd let so many (about 30) go OOP? Naturally, none of Tom Baker's are included.

That's insane. Most of the DVDs are still available over here for normal, or near to normal, price. No Who DVD is worth the prices you mentioned. Actually, no DVD period. Who or otherwise.

^ Tell that to the collector who has them all except say The War Games! Glad I've completed my collection already!

It was thanks to one of the posters here (maybe diankra?) who posted a heads-up a year or two ago that this was happening and it prompted me to finish my collection!

Mr Awe

whoa when did that happen!? I bought "War Games" (on Amazon) not more than six weeks ago and I certainly didn't pay that price. In fact let me check.........

.....paid $36. I must have gotten in just in time. I looked up the list Omahastar is referring to - that stories like "The Invasion", "Time Meddler", "Terror of the Autons", "Fontios", "Curse of Fenric" and "Planet of the Spiders" (a regeneration story for cryin out loud!) are now unavailable is a crime.

But unless there are reissues or season sets in the works, its disappointing, a little unfair and odd to keep some in print and some not, especially when some are still coming out (Underwater Menace).

looks like the best course of action for a new collector in the States would be to just buy a region-free DVD player and just get all the UK versions.

The last DVD I got was The Tenth Planet and with the exception of the last two Doctors Revivisted DVD sets my classic collection is all gaught up I think. Now we wait for any new possible releases if anythat Phil Morris may or may not have. But then I guess there's also an upcoming Underwater Menace DVD to be released, I'm looking forward to that one.

A friendly advise:

Just start buying all the Eighth Doctor Adventures spin-off series. Then, just seek out and buy the first 50 BF audios. Those really were BF's peak.

You won't be dissapointed. Particularly in regards to the Sixth Doctor, who's so much better there.
