If he'd had even a handful of directing credits for the television shows he's been associated with, I wouldn't have been as concerned. But he had nothing, not a stage play, not a television commercial, not even a music video. There was no guarantee he knew how to work with actors, a film crew, or complicated visual effects.

Which is why it would've been interesting. It could've been a spectacular success or a spectacular failure. It would've kept us talking for decades!

I admit that, and a fresh set of eyes might have been a good thing. He might have been a visual genius, or brilliantly restaged famous camera angles from the last 100 years of film history. He certainly seemed to have the enthusiasm for it. But I can understand why the bean counters got weak in the knees with an untested director.

At some point in time, an outside perspective is necessary to expand a vision. I think Orci, as a fan, as well as his years of work in production would have informed him far more than that he is ever given credit for.

Also, if he had truly offended the entire Trek fan base then I highly doubt we would be having this conversation. Others have said far worse things and have been forgiven by the fan base, so an incident that occurred and was apologized for is not one to persuade me against Orci.

I think Paramount decided it was not the direction they wanted to go, especially with the 50th anniversary as part of this whole thing.

    Again, wait and see.

Having been at the receiving end of TrekMovie comments, I'd have to say that Orci has shown both admirable restraint. There's some crazy people on that site.

Yep. TrekMadeMeWonder seems to think he's on a short list to write and direct the next Star Trek movie, Cygnus-X1 is bitterly obsessive, and boborci probably ought to have a restraining order against I am not Herbert. ;)

I like reading the comments on trekmovie because fans there have more freedom to express themselves and not be mistaken for trolls or attacking other individuals. great free speech and great expression of the first amendment is on trekmovie so I really like the site but I agree sometimes things can get out of hand on that site.

I have never understood why orci goes to there and starts arguing with fans, writers should know by now that on the Internet you cant win with fans.

I feel sorry for orci. I wish him nothing but the best in anything his hands does that has t do with star trek.:)

Trekmovie permits somewhat greater freedom of expression, but if folks get out of hand they delete posts. That doesn't happen here, though sometimes specifically troublesome content is edited out.

Also, the First Amendment does not =/= being a jackass on the interwebz without the risk of consequence.

None the less, TBBS has a venue for the kind of behavior.

    Speaking about trekmovie...
Interesting thing is that DAYS before these news and rumors broke, someone over trekmovie already knew about it all

On December 3, they wrote in reply to someone wondering about the lack of news about the movie:

I guess either badass digest read that comment and made an article, or the rumors circulating are onto something.
That's a bit depressing if true.

Those rumours, the person behind them and more, are detailed in this thread: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=257395&page=5

    I missed that, lol
    Ok brb reading

Edit: omg what is THAT post
    it scared me :guffaw:
So you think it's the same person? Could be.
It's possible they had one generic information right (orci not directing) and they decorated it with other crazy stuff.

For some reason, this image seemed appropriate.

Also, I am a big advocate of civil discourse. Regardless of opinions, and agreement or disagreement, I think it bears reminding that on the other end of the Internet is another person, with feelings too. Shocking, I know ;)

    There may be something here.

Folks is it possible that TPTB have something truly grand in mind for the 50th? That the next movie must be more than just NuTrek-III? ST09 and STID will be build upon (not discarded); however instead of the trailing installment in a trilogy, audiences will be treated to something truly magnificent for this monumental anniversary.

I am starting to get my hopes up.

Are you sure that para mobius was actually behind that original post, and didn't just claim information put forward by another? That post is much more cautious and sane than what he's put out since.

I meant to suggest Para Mobius's posts on the ST Fans FB page were the "rumors circulated" that guy spoke of, not that he was actually Para Mobius.

I don't see that at all when I watch STID.

I see a bunch story elements and creative decisions that were made in an effort to make the movie appeal to the widest audience possible.

It's like there was a checklist of items they wanted to include for marketing purposes. The script was simply a way of linking them all together.
