    Cold Fusion isn't cold.

Carol Marcus is a weapons expert who spends the entire movie not knowing anything about the one weapon in the movie.

Spock is mind melding with his former CO while he dies. He does nothing. Someone who Spock has spent more screen time with arguing with and beating up dies in a selfless act that is surprisingly logical, and he flips his shit.

Everything in the movie is resolved by dumb luck and violence.
-Deactivating the Torpedo? Just pull out a random bunch of wires!

    - Fixing a Warp core? Kick the thing 7 times!

    - Stopping a genetically engineered super-man who has proved impervious to physical harm and phasers? Beat him senseless with a hunk of metal!

-Need to revive the main character you killed off 7 minutes ago?
    ????????????

I really think thats the most heinous thing the movie does - have zero interest in promoting critical thinking. Shit, even Iron Man celebrates the fact Tony Stark is a genius - why can't Spock think his way out of the situation? Or the Weapons expert BE an expert? You can get the same results out of these scenes if you just show the characters be competent, yet the movie only does this in one scene - with Sulu in the Captains chair threatening Khan. That's the only scene in the entire movie where a character rises to the occasion in a way that shows off any kind of skill or tact. I'm not saying we need the fucking sulphur/salt peter/carbon/gunpowder crap from TOS - just make the characters smart in the most modest of ways. Have them be competent! Thats how they were at the end of '09. What was wrong with that then?

Pulling the bodies from the torpedoes and replacing them with explosives doesn't qualify?

Sounds more like "why can't they make it boring, like TNG?"

Like Kirk did in "Space Seed"?

I can do this all day long...

The torpedo thing is addressed in the movie. It simply makes Spock not a mass murderer with an average IQ. He was giving into Khan's demands - from a certain point of view. And the hunk of metal thing you're right about. Like Kirk did.

Spock's girlfriend is literally screaming at him to stop, yet he goes in for one final bludgeon. YAY! Role models!

Oh, are you under the misimpression that one of those items is at significant variance with the kinds of story, character and scientific plausibility typical of Star Trek over the last half-century?

    You're mistaken.

Thanks. I noticed that nonsense too, but don't have the patience.

Please don't use fictional characters as role models - certainly not TV characters. Think of the children.

I watch Star Trek for entertainment, not because I'm looking for role models. Sorry, I just don't.

Spock has a history of attacking people with blunt objects. (And by people I mean James T. Kirk)

I think a lot of the nitpickers where the portrayals of the Trek characters in nuTrek are concerned simply don't remember the details of TOS very well.

BTW, here's Bob Orci's current Twitter avatar - I love a guy with a sense of humor and proportion:

His self-description on Twitter reads:"An internet character designed for entertainment purposes only. Any similarity to Roberto Orci is part of a conspiracy."

I should come clean and say I butchered that quote. The actual thing said was:

"Its in the right hands as far as the director goes. It's in the wrong hands as far as the writers go because they are plugging in references and making a big dumb action movie...and I'm not naive enough to think they'll make Star Trek: The Motion Picture again. Never gonna happen. But you can have a Star Trek action movie, with better writing."

That sums up my thoughts on the matter pretty well as to why Orci going is a good thing. Because the writing was the weak link. Giving him more control doesn't inspire confidence.

While it is, of course, my opinion, the first ten minutes of Star Trek (2009) is some of the best trek ever written.

    - TUC: Shows McCoy and Spock solving the situation by doing actual work on the torpedo with implied problem solving. Literally the same thing as the scene in ID on that conveniently placed planetoid.

    - TV Khan wasn't the super soldier that ID Khan was. And Khan had just tried to directly kill Kirk himself. Plus, ya know, emotions and all that jazz.

    - They spent an entire fucking movie bringing back a main character because they didn't resolve it in less time than it takes to microwave a meal.

    Am I mistaken?

How long has it been his avatar? He's known what was in the wind longer than we have. ;)

RE: Orci's cryptic "Bigger chairs to fill" post at Trekmovie: apparently Orci will be the executive producer on the shortly to be announced Star Trek television series.

That actually makes a lot of sense and explains a few things, given his track record as a TV producer.

I agree. That is however not what I, the video, or anyone here is talking about.

This will be of awesome entertainment value on the internet. Wonder how the shithead who thinks there were problems and Orci was fired will spin this one?! :guffaw:

Well, for one thing it'd be amazing to see CBS and Paramount agree on something Star Trek related.

Had that since many months I think

    it would make sense
Though ,I'd rather get a great third movie first and some closure for this story..
A new series probably wouldn't be about these characters unless it's an animated one like Orci once predicted
