Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 Discussion Threads. (Spoilers Likely)

I'm sure Reinhardt got a trial. I mean, are we supposed to believe that the Allies in the MCU gave Hermann Göring a trial, but not a commander in Hydra?

Well, to be fair, I think we were supposed to get the idea in the first Captain America that Red Skull and Co. were "worse" than the Nazis.

I can't say I agree with that notion at all. I mean, philosophically, the key difference between 1940s-era Hydra and the Nazis are that 1940s-era Hydra seems to have abandoned worship of Hitler and may not believe in the racial superiority of Germans. But they were still part of the Nazi power structure, were still relying on the German Army to protect them from the Allies, and were still at best complicit in, and more likely active participants in, the Holocaust and numerous other Nazi war crimes. And that's to say nothing of their desire to commit mass genocide themselves.
.

I wouldn't be surprised if the issue here was one of sensitivity, that somebody was worried about trivializing the Holocaust by reducing the Nazis to comic-book super-villains in a popcorn action-adventure movie. Or maybe they just thought that thinking about the real Nazis and what they did would get in the way of enjoying a swashbuckling comic-book adventure?

Granted, this has been done before (Hello, Indiana Jones), but I can see where the studio might reasonably want to put some distance between the actual horrors of the Holocaust and what's meant to be an escapist summer blockbuster. Better to air toward caution and eschew lots of Nazi imagery.

And, along the same lines, there's the whole merchandising issue. Did we really want lots of toys and tee-shirts and and Happy Meals with swastikas all over them?

Again, better to go with the Hydra logo instead . . ..

A few years ago, in Avengers Assemble, the cartoon before the current stupid one made for babies, the Allies only fought Hydra.

Every parent stresses about the Santa talk, or the sex talk, but what the #### about the Nazi talk?

I think my kid was seven when it first came up and he did not believe me.

Zyklon B, as if!

Thought I was was fucking with him.

Out of curiosity, in the comics what happens to "normal" humans exposed to the terrigen mists? I'm just wondering if it looks anything like what happened to Mac...

Also; increased strength and rage issues sounds a bit like what's going on with Skye's dad no? Not to mention Bruce Banner...whos' serum was derived from samples of Cap's blood and now I'm wondering if Dr Erskine based his work on something Hydra may have found before the war. Wow, this continuity rabbit hole suddenly got pretty deep. ;)

My understanding is nothing happens. There was an episode of the 90s Fantastic Four cartoon (which wasn't great, but did draw heavily from the comics) where Maximus the Mad wanted to release the Terrigen mist over the world to poison humans. The end result was nothing happened because all of them are humans, even the Inhumans. Of course, with Inhumanity, it was revealed that there are more Inhumans with dormant powers mixed among the population and the Terrigen Bomb activated their powers.

Fine episode. For some reason it felt like a filler in the end even though they covered quite a bit. It just felt lacking.

I can't possibly think how any episode that ends in a cliffhanger that sets up the midseason finale could possibly be considered filler. What happened to Mac alone moves it out of filler category, but it moves several pieces along (Skye meeting her dad, Coulson finding the temple, the team learning about the Diviner and its purpose, etc.). None of those things are filler just because the episode didn't resolve them.

I don't recall the word 'plan' being used. I think he said something like "does Hunter know about the other thing"[paraphrase].
Leading the fan boy in me to hope Mack was referring to Clint Barton.
I assumed they were referring to a thing between Bobbi and Mac.

What kind of plan was he and Bobbi into that he didn't want Hunter in on? More wheels within wheels?

Probably not, unless they're talking about a threesome:

Mac: So, you and Hunter...again.
Bobbie: I know
Mac: Been through it enough times...
Bobbie: I know.
Mac:...gluttons for punishment I'd say.
Bobbie: Let's not go down this road, okay? You're a big brother but you're not my big brother.
Mac: Your personal life, that's your business. I'm just wondering if it means bringing Hunter in on the other thing.
Bobbie: That?! No.
Mac: I figured after we lost Hartley you'd try to...
Bobbie: No, he has no idea. And I'd like it to stay that way.
Mac: Copy that.

I think "in on the other thing" suggests it's some kind of secret or plan.

Side note on location shoots: They really went to Puerto Rico, but I'm guessing Los Angeles stood in for Vancouver...?

(At least they got the license plates for BC right.)

That was very impressive location filming. It felt like I was watching a movie!

I'm really, really dying to see how this story resolved, since we know there's an Inhuman movie in a few years!

Personally, while it's cool to see them traveling, they did blow a lot of their budget last year on traveling. And it's not like Los Angeles isn't a good substitute for some place warm and sunny like Puerto Rico.

That being said, their trip to Sweden last year (which was completely unnecessary) sold to me that they were taking the production of their show seriously. Even though they weren't having big names, they did care about what they were doing. That being said, they do have to spend wisely.

SHIELD being SHIELD, I expect a bit of globe-trotting. In fact, I expect a lot of globe-trotting. The Stockholm expedition was a necessary thing.

Man, I really hope that Mack isn't dead. He's been a great friend to Fitz. :(

What I really loved about this episode was Coulson's "acceptable losses" speech to Bobbi. That's why I've loved this show from the start. I'm glad he doesn't feel obligated to become Fury. And hopefully that's why Fury felt him important enough to bring back from the dead.
